Petition to bring back the DDF/DDA and get back on track.

'blaze you own trail all trades are equal'

I was watching the Dev Diaries earlier out of interest (to remind myself of those exciting early times full of anticipation).

I remember specifically where David talked about not wanting to single out one particular career as the biggest money-maker, in fact that he wanted the game to encourage players to multi-role where possible.

There were also many other topics covered, and I found myself beginning to feel pretty despondent when I saw all the reminders of what hasn't ("yet" - hm, this word seems weaker with each use...) happened.

Time was, I would say "it's early days" all the time to people who were bemoaning missing/incomplete features.

And here I am browsing the forums whilst playing original Elite on Amiga 500 Emulator - I haven't touched ED for over a week.

Sure I'll be back. Just no idea when.

Totally need the DDF back the game direction is sliding away and I suspect many of the features talked about are no longer a priority.

Bring it back I say. Not that it would make any difference though. How many of the great ideas / thoughts etc. that FD themselves thought of never mind the DDF helping to thrash out minor details have actually been included. There are elements of it, but by far and large most of it has been left by the wayside. The DDA is now an albatross around their necks, with everyone who knew about the DDF pointing at it and wondering when we'll see the content that was asked about.

DDA was what made me hand over 300 notes to alpha phase and what got me talking about the game on other forums.

Hey FD get me talking again because it's gone very quiet here.

It was FD that decided to tie a noose around their neck instead of using the rope to climb.......:D

Any new content will be classified as an update or expansion, otherwise David would have to admit to releasing an incomplete game. He'll never do that, as witnessed right after release.

obviously the game is incomplete, always was intended & sold to be incomplete at "release". the basic concept of this game is (even if that is seemingly a complex idea to grasp) that it will never be complete. and obviously it will never be complete in the understanding of everyone of its players. *

what FDEV released was a GREAT platform the launch from, nothing more, nothing less.

and that was made crystal clear during the kickstarter campaign and in various regulatory releases since.

* plus there is always found ground for discussion if feature x, y, z was implemented according to everyones interpretation of Elite. words issued by FDEV are minced with personal flavour and you guys seriously wonder why they do not send you a weekly update of their project planners/road maps? lulz

Indeed, Several weeks ago I copied the DDA to my desktop, with the intention of going through it to so what made the cut so far (even just hints of it) and what didn't. After a very short while I was so despondent with what I was finding, I gave up. The Dream were were sold, where once was a shared dream has turned into something else now.

EDIT:

Over the past few months I've noticed many of the original backers, some of whom have contributed thousands of pounds now feel that what they thought they were getting isn't what we've got or are getting any time soon. More and more of those who were shouting FD's name from great heights are now quietly watching from the sidelines, hoping against hope that something will emerge that brings the game more in line.

Show me where prior to release Fd said the game will be released barebones or "unfinished" if you like. While you're at it, please direct me to anything that states a "10 year plan" BEFORE release.

We use quotes and provide references whenever waranted, we don't tailor words to fit our agenda, we use FD's words, quoted. Funny our "agenda" used to be FD's, and that's the problem init?

I sign, but not likely to happen I'm afraid.

One thing Frontier need is fresh eyes. I suggest they get 12 people from this very community. People who make decent posts and who don't have a habbit of white-knighting for them. And ask them to form a feedback committee. Get their ACTUAL NAMES AND ADDRESSES, not merely their forum IDs. Have them SIGN (with ink) non-disclosure agreements on pain of litigation, and have them promise to give up their first-born should they break said agreement.

The current path of development, dancing around with suggestive "we'll see" comments and then releasing fully formed game features as you are isn't working out at all. There is no way that powerplay, as the boardgame concept it is, would have made it past such a committee. The same with infinite shield cell banks, timed merit decay, etc. You're too close to Elite to see and fully apprecaite what will happen when thousands of players are out there. You need to have some mechanism in place in the development process that lets you see mistakes early and stop working on projects which will, eventually, be defended with the phrase "You don't have to play it!"

A lot of people throwing around the word "interpretation" nowadays too.

Pretty sure most of that will show up...someday. We have just got the tier 1 NPC's. We just got the capabilities to deal with more complicated missions....via in game messaging. This is laying the foundation for interactive NPC's. In some respects, things like the announcements in SC are stepping towards these items.

NPC wingmen, interactions, and passengers....even the orrery view...will get here someday. The game is quite enjoyable without them...and might be more enjoyable with them later. When I read the devs idea they would be developing this game in a similar manner to Minecraft...I believed everyone playing at that time understood what that meant. A very base game that would be developed over many years. It took years for Minecraft to become what it is today. Please sit back and enjoy the ride....or take a break and come back in 6 months.

On top of all the above, people might still be unhappy with the outcomes, as reality NEVER matches the fantasy that comes from imagination. I would love fully acted NPC's with AI responses equal to human iteractions with the likes of Leelu, Jean Luc, and Garibaldi. This is covered completely by the DDF....'make it so!'

My point is people need to get their expectations in line with what a developer is reasonably able to produce. Time is the enemy of developers...only because people have expectations...many exceedingly out of balance with human capabilities.

Well, FD can make that game with another kickstarter then......oh wait...too late. If that isn't the classic example of "bait and switch" I don't know what is.

I'm not saying I'm all for it, but it is what it is. And fact is, backers aren't entitled to choose the direction of the game. And for that matter, they aren't entitled to anything else than playing the game and having the expansions for free. That's why I never backed anything on kickstarter, and probably never will.

How do you know? I like the idea of arena combat, but I don't think it should have been given higher priority than content and/or better gameplay

I can't know for sure, but it seems FD agrees with me on this one. It will appeal to casual players, without watering down the gameplay, which is a pretty good business decision.

Isn't that, in effect, a petition to re-develop ED from scratch ?
That's a thing even my blurry crystal ball can predict won't happen.
