What's happened to the ring systems?! They look terrible!!

The very first "Toxic Waste" training mission, in the standalone Combat Demo 1.00 version (old build, repackaged as demo)...

The same "Toxic Waste" training mission, from the built-in training scenarios in our current built 1.3.06...

The old 1.00 certainly wasn't the best it's ever looked, but even that clearly has more going for it than 1.3.06.

Something has broken.

I'm all for saying that something got messed with in the rings overall, but light directions in your pics are opposites. Or it looks like they are. The experiment is good though, I'll try that too.

Edit: Oops I was terribly wrong. Light directions ARE more or less the same, sorry for that.
The difference is so huge my brain didn't cope with it :D

It's really a shame, because at first (in beta) I was totally impressed by how good the rings looked and how smooth they were despite the number of moving objects, and since then it seems they have continuously degraded. Now they're barely bearable. I reported the missing dust as soon as I found out in 1.3b, but all I was told was "Interesting, I will pass this information onto the relevant department. ". And that's it. Nothing changed.

Now whether the relevant department a) never got the message, b) is on vacation, c) is incompetent, or d) is doing what it's been told to do, I don't know. I wish I did.

The last ring I encountered was just a white disc. No shadows, no anything. Looked awful. Too awful to even take a screenshot off for a bug report. Felt terrible. Flew closer to see if the visual impression changed with less distance; aborted that attempt when I couldn't take it anymore.

They do look terrible compared to the original. The Beta was a lovely looking game. Obviously balancing and the need for Xbox streamlining will reduce the detail in the game considerably. I just hope we (the PC crowd I mean) get the functionality to enable us to raise the view distances and detail etc whilst the graphics are reduced for the consoles. But I would like to know how the consoles are going to cope with this game at all considering I cant run the game without stuttering (well at least last time I looked at it before Powerplay) and there is a lot of gameplay still to be added. And we all know the graphics have already be downgraded considerably from even the standard Beta - especially the cockpits, just to get the PC version to work reasonably smoothly.

Something has broken.

I really hope it is a case that something has broken.

I'm not entirely convinced of that though - because in some cases some of the "downgrades" in graphics have been here since before release.

These two screenshots look like they are taken on completely different systems. Or as though one was taken on high settings and the other on low. It's a shame that isn't the case.

As you say, hopefully it is a case that something is broken, and that soon it will be fixed.

I will say that performance on the Rift has gotten a lot better inside the rings for me. That said, they aren't really worth visiting now for the most part - because most of them really don't look all that interesting.

Shocking.

These were all taken today, not sure if they highlight the issues as I have only played intermittently over the past few months and not noticed any obvious changes. The training missions doesn't look good though.

If you read the thread you would know. ;)

This was linked earlier:
Taken from this bug report:

Thanks for the info and the link. And just so you know; no, I'm not going to read an entire 11 page thread. Thanks though :D

Edit: Now that I've looked back I see why I missed it. I was looking for the Frontier post highlight that indicates a post by someone at Frontier and it wasn't there because it wasn't a reply to this thread.

The first one shows the separation between the near and far asteroids pretty well. You shouldn't be able to tell where the background begins and the foreground ends as you can in that pic.

In the first beta they looks perfect and , over time they got less and less detail.

-first the lods got messed up (close roids are grey far away ones are brown etc)
-then they reduced the number of roids in genral.

the only thing they did good with them recently is enchance the fog... but it does not change the rubbish lod

As an aside, I'd love to see the "super dense" rings make a comeback. Like this, from Beta 2 last year...

If I remember correctly, this crazy density was NOT working as intended... it was due to a ring generation issue that layered up multiple rings, sandwiched together. It wasn't quite right, as a result. If you flew to particular spots in the asteroids, you could see "seams". If you look carefully in the video @ 5:40, you can clearly see such a seam/gap. If you followed a seam, you could sometimes find another seam running perpendicular to it, forming a magic "asteroid crossroad" in space, for no adequately explored reason. :)

PC health warning: Some beta testers found this ring system completely ate their framerate, lol. Like 5fps. Me, I saw around 26fps with shadow quality reduced, on a pc with 560Ti card and an Intel i5 cpu.

Still, it was fun while it lasted, bugs and all! :D

Well I'm glad it's not just me. But I really don't think I want to go check what these look like in the Rift. The Rings were the most stunning things to see in the Rift once upon a time. :(

If that is there intent, it would seem they are succeeding. No one really seems to be making any complaints about it.

I am an Xbox One player and, for what I've seen, rings look like the first screencap and "problems" with he LOD are a supercruise issue (you have to be more or less 10Mm away to start seeing the rocks as rocks and not just a ring

This change must be the all new and amazing upcoming change that they are working on introducing that they can barely hold them selves from telling us about.

Pointless negativity such as this is not helpful. Or are you just picking a random "game problem" thread and dropping the above text into it?
