The Powerplay discussion thread.

I think the more you lose the better the experience. Imagine if your credit card numbers were at risk. Imagine some griefer ganking your savings, what that game would be worth. Elite Dangerous is the name after all.

I like being aligned with a power and the PvP possibilities it opens up. Plus the perks and goodies are pretty sweet. I have no intent of working past rank 3 however and will power hop to collect all the toys I want. The whole merit grind is not my thing.

Disclaimer: nothing wrong with what your are doing and I am not quoting you specifically to pick on you.

Part of the issue with PP is that people are going to cheapen the experience by 'gaming' it : There are some interesting toys so naturally people like having an edge so will meta-play ED until they have them all. Kind of defeats the point of PP. I know there are repercussions when you defect / leave but for me they are not restrictive enough.

Real world comparison (sorry) - if you work your way up the ranks to become allied to a nation to the point that you 'know' things then defect, you will from that point onwards ALWAYS be known as a traitor/defector and never fully trustd again.

In ED you can join a power, game it, get the shiny, defect and repeat ... begs the question: why would the new power trust you enough to give you new toys?

Yes, I know its a game, but 'consistency' springs to mind .. actions have consequences and not just delays. (Maybe my gaming these days is too extreme / hardcorr so I am missing something here :))

Thanks for the answers. I'm happy doing my own thing for now so I guess I'll keep on doing that :)

I'm guessing that nobody is really sure if this will have an effect on the future of the game. I currently see it more as a political mini-game and so I'm not really interested in taking part.

Good luck to those that are. I hope it's fun for you =) Let me know who wins! :D

I like it , but maybe thats because I RP as an alliance defender and go out and attack any and all systems that are too near alliance space. I see a lot of combat and had 2PVP in 2weeks (thats a record compared to 1 encounter every 2-3 months)

It's actually distributed PvP a lot and forces you to travel a hell of a lot more. Where you could just rock up to a CG conflict and get your blast on you now have to buzz around and hunt.

Hi All,

One of the powers is now 20 LY from the edge of "our domain", so I expect to be dragged into it in July. I was planning to use my secondary character, but he will need to go on hold as my primary character will need to get involved.

Every keeps telling me the background simulator cannot be used to counter the powers, I generally hope they are wrong - so I am going to give it a try first couple of weeks of July. Failing that I will join a rival power and undermine lie the rest.

I will either start a thread titled "How to protect your chosen home from power play"
or
a thread entitled "How not to protect your chosen home from power play"

+1, some good ideas. And thanks for the link to the other suggestions thread which I'd missed, some good ideas there too.

I was excited by the idea of powerplay but like many hate the implementation.

I haven't had a proper go of PP yet, but it looks interesting and probably will have a more solid go at it soon. I think from the little bits I have done, their should be a lot more varied missions to do to get merits instead of pretty much the same CG type missions everytime. Hopefully these will come with time.

Powerplay : should we not be able to claim systems?

I wonder why our factions do not take over systems when they exploit or controle one. it seems a bit odd.
it could be one of two things maybe.

1. before the faction change can happen the entiere power must be whiped out? (like an ocupation were the police still can act)

2. its just an influance thing and only changes small details for the population.

i feel your pain OP - i remember when i entered my first high conflict zone in the early days - no idea what was going on but so much action all around me. it was amazing! I decided to target an npc and join in the fun...whoah! was that ever a bad move! i learned the hard way but it was a good learning experience.

i also recall the first time i was killed by another CMDR due to my friendly fire in a RES - i had the mother of all hissy fits and swore i would never play in Open and would stick to Solo. but once the feeling of injustice subsides, you soon realise that its all due to inexperience.

Elite can be unforgiving at times, but that's what made it (pre PP) such an awesome experience. Perhaps go Solo for a while but hang in there CMDR - we have all felt the sting of an 'injustice' but that's what makes us better pilots.

Heh had my first experience getting killed by another CMDR last night. Was at a resource site when I spotted a CMDR we were happily shooting NPCs and i took a some hull damage(60%) but kept fighting. Then out of nowhere he turned on me. Was a master Vulture vs my "harmless" asp. Blew me up without me even getting a shot off at him as I tried to run thinking it was an annoying NPC shooting me.

I was furiouse then as i was leaving the station I saw him coming to land, opened fire forgetting about the no fire zone. Dead again.

I can't afford to fly my asp now. Good times to be had online I guess.

Powerplay cycle tick time and date?

Hello everyone,

I know that this is a silly question, and the information is already in the manual, but when does the powerplay cycle ticks for this current week? From my calculations, it should be on Thursday, but I have read somewhere that FDEV counted a week as 6 days (would not be surprised as it comes from the same people that thought left-hand driving was a good idea..).

Could someone please give me the precise date and time in gmt+0 when the cycle will tick? And how many days/hours does it take from there to the next tick?

Thanks! o7 and fly safe!

So if I'm understanding this properly you came back from a 4 month hiatus after coming back you got killed by a player and that makes Powerplay the worst thing ever?

Turns out people only shoot other people in Open because Power Play told them to do it - I did not know that.
I'd like to know how the OP explains PvP before PP, back when he left the game. Or did PP learn to time travel and cause players 6 months ago to shoot other players ???

Currently 0800 on UK time actually, since we have daylight savings time and are currently running on British Summer Time, not GMT. It ticks over at 0800 BST (currently, UK time), and 0700 GMT.

And yes it's the same time every week.

It's because powerplay is only loosely affiliated with the local faction system. Instead of tying it all together they built a series of bonuses and penalties involved in acquiring and defending systems that are or aren't major faction-aligned - they must be thinking that players would adapt over time and only attempt to capture systems that are in the same major faction. Hasn't happened yet.

If you ask yourself why President Hudson apparently chose an Independent system as his headquarters, instead of the Federation-aligned system next door, the depressing answer is that powerplay was just pasted on what's already there, with almost no changes of significance to underlying mechanics. It sounds a little harsh but with no statements at all from FD it seems the most logical reason.

Further Powerplay Explanation Needed

I've been flying around the empire, talking to the different powers and trying to tune my circuit (sig) to fit powerplay control effects, and have found some disturbing stuff:

Most crucially, Patreus' guys still don't know what the "high value goods" described in their control effects are, and thus cannot plan control/exploitation effectively.

Aislings guys know, but many don't or didn't understand the different effects on exploited vs. Control systems, which are vital.

The result is the same, we're now dealing with economic disasters, with some of the highest supplies of important goods in the empire rendered useless by the accompanying increased purchase price, because they were made control systems by mistake.

I think this clearly demonstrates that further explanation is needed. I have copious supply /demand notes from pre-powerplay and even I can't tell, 100%, what Patreus' high value goods are - although i think they're HT related goods like Perfs and maybe Res Seps.

A single post in answer would solve future issues, but the damage done is immense. Powers are defeating their own bonuses through lack of info, and the economy in the Empire with them.

I tend to agree....there should be a big warning stipulating the risks as you click the pledge button. That would be an easy fix.

I tend to agree. Even that other game (EvE) throws a warning when signing up for 'Factional Warfare' and at least it is actually called warfare. It can't be that difficult to code a text box!
