The Powerplay discussion thread.

A non grinding gameplay style is the best approach for all aspects of ED pledged or not, I've been playing for over a year now (early Beta's) and I've never felt inclined to stop playing simply because I don't grind the best paying profession to death. With PP I do a few missions during the 30 minute document interval and do some PP deliveries when the hold is full, I'll probably look for a CG next as they can be a lot of fun :)

Ya I have been having a blast with all aspects, but prior to pledging all I have been seeing is people referring to powerplay as a grind, and I strongly believe it's only a grind of you treat it that way. I think for longevity's sake, the best approach to Elite is to constantly switch up your playstyle.

That only happens if you defect to another power. Leaving a power incurs no penalty except not being able to pledge to another power for a while.

I didn't know this, I thought they hated you after you retired from the pledge... Can you rejoin the original power right back or is there a cooldown? when you rejoin do you maintain the same level that you retired at?

There's a cooldown. And you lose your status when you leave the power. But hey, you're a privateer so when the job's done there's no residuals on either side right?

Thanks for the info.

I think there would be (have been) Privateers who are more appreciated than others, those that accept and deliver on more contracts than others would build a reputation... no?

Well you keep your reputation, so things like higher-level missions will be available. But if you walk away you have to accept some sort of penalty, surely.

Yeah - it's only a grind if you perceive it that way - I started into this cycle with 15k merits - now many people would say that it's not achievable without grinding, but I personally never felt like I was grinding - pirated and undermined for fun during the weekend, traded and fortified a little for relaxation after work in the evenings during the week.

I am aware that going beyond 10k merits is pointless from a min/maxing perspective and I actually didn't intend to, but then again my power was involved in late prep battles during the last two weeks so I hauled 6-8k tons each wednesday night. Sounds like a grind? Nope - didn't feel like it to me - each run felt satisfying because I knew I'd either help my power prevail or make the opposing side pay heavily at the very least.

Now I dislike quite a few things about PPs implementation, but this is not the thread for it ;).

Agreed that there should be some disadvantage to being a Privateer, but losing all progress seems a little harsh to me.

Perhaps look at it from a different direction, instead of losing something perhaps Privateers simply accrue Merits at a reduced rate, or certain missions aren't available to Privateers (because they're not as trusted)....

Just some ideas.

I treat all the other grinding aspects of Elite in a relaxed way, blazing my own trail in my own time.

Too bad that for PP the grind is on a timer.

Not being able to play with friends since Powerplay update

So.. every Thursday two friends of mine and I meet on one of the guys' apartment to drink some beer and play ED.
Since Powerplay update we are not able to play together.
Before Porwerplay we just needed to click "Play" button on the luncher at the same time, so main menu show that we were on the same server and never had a problem with that...
But now is impossible to end up in the same server this way (maybe because of the "generating shaders" thing?)... so... we end up in difference instances... when we are lucky two of us end up in the same instance, but most of the time we find ourself alone. Sometimes we find each other in supercruise, but, even if we are on a wing, when some of us exit supercruise, the wake don't appear... if someone deploy the wing beacon, nothing happen either... sometimes we are not able to create a wing with the three of us.
Last night we tried to play in a private group and we ended up facing the same issues that I've mentioned before.

Is there any way or tip to play with your buddies now?
Thx in advance for the help.

Try deleting your Elite entries in Windows firewall and recreating them - IF there are any there. Mine have strangely gone missing :(

Hey Asp, tried this as well when you mentioned that the .exe was different since 1.3 which I find odd, as it is named the same,, lol but did not have any affect for wingin up with friends.

It's worth a try, if nothing else it can't harm anything. I've had to re-add mine a few times. I did get very confused one night after a few beverages trying to launch Elite and absolutely nothing worked - no launcher, no shortcuts, no firewall entries - no nothing. It took me a good 45 minutes to figure out I was booting from my domain build drive and not my workgroup build drive - oops.

I am in total agreement with the Op. One of the most common reasons for unpledging, if you read these forums, is that pledging severly limits the area of the universe you can go.

There isn't a reason powers would all be at each others throats constantly, not with so much unexplored and unharnessed territory elsewhere in the universe they could expand into.

"As it is currently implemented, PowerPlay is either In or Out, Hostile or Not. " Its not the case.

I like your suggestion but it just does not seem to fit with Pledging. I Pledge allegiance to Jeff Jeffity Jeff Jeff unless someone else is around.

Am I wrong, or does pledging mean that others can attack you with complete impunity in their territory? Furthermore, is it true that you also get a bounty put on you if you try to defend yourself against them?

I only have 25 merits lol and since my cargo hold can only carry 8 tons I don't expect to be able to get more than 20 maybe 30 merits per hour of play and by the sounds of it that's not much, so I'm really just doing it for the added excitement and knowledge that I'm opposing an enemy expansion even if my contribution is nothing major. I don't quite understand how the merit decay works bur I read somewhere that after a cycle you lose a large chunk of them. That's ok with me , I'll just set my goal a little lower and try and reach and stay in rank 2 or maybe even 3(don't know what the threshold is) and just have fun participating.

  • Be on each others friends list
  • Join the same group
  • Try texting each other to improve connection/matching/instancing
  • Try making a Hyper space jump before connecting

Good luck Commander

1- we already are... since ED was released
2- we created a group with the three of us the first time we play ED
3- we are getting the message of "comm failed" most of the time when we try to text each other
4- I don't understand what you mean there :)

cheers.

I read somewhere else that activating hyperjumps "could" help instancing. I have no idea if it works, but worth a try. Just make sure all of you have made a jump to a different system. :)

Side note: Everyone is getting kicked from the servers right now, so don't try now. :)

i had the same issue playing with my son on the same network, i turned off UPNP on the router and magically we can now wing and play together with no issues and we see more players in game.

Before any internet nerds start 'oh no you should not turn that off' ..... shush.
It works for me at least.
