Jettison (abandon) shouldn't exist

I've had many traders who would rather die then give me one ton of cargo. Both players have something the other wants it's very much a negotiation. You might not like what happens if you walk away from the table, but it's still a negotiation.

Right you are - but to magically make a stolen cargo not stolen is just stupid.

If EVERY other crime is automatically reported by a ships computer then the act of forcing a player to "give" cargo after an interdiction is reason enough to either flag the cargo due to the combination of A: Interdicted and B: Abandoning cargo.

Either that or cargo picked up from an interdicted player becomes flagged as stolen when picked up from that instance.

Speaking as a trader, I believe negotiation is possible using the jettison/abandon system.

For instance, let's say the Pirate demands 10 tons, you could negotiate to drop 10 tons jettisoned or 6 tons abandoned.

The Pirate then has a choice between a smaller safer cargo, or a larger stolen one.

It's possible some good RP could come from this.

Having said that, they'll get my cargo from my cold dead corpse, and not before...not that my A grade Python gets interdicted much :D

This whole thread makes it sounds like pirates are the plague of the galaxy, running amok and happily scooping away the profits of honest traders.
In reality, Frontier have ensured that this is not the case by making piracy extremely hard and unprofitable.

I doubt there are more than a handful of active pirates at the moment (although a few may return to it when the 20t limit is adjusted). Most of the active ones are really traders who do a bit of pirating on the side for fun.

In light of this the whole debate about abandoned cargo seems fairly unimportant.

There are a lot of threads discussing this mechanic. For me, its one of the main reasons I haven't yet tried pirating, smuggling goods seems too much for little returns. So if I was a pirate Id become one of those sociopaths who just gank you instead...

That's not against piracy. It is against make goods available as clear whereas they are actually stolen. Piracy should involve black market, and it currently does not since the "abandon" option is available.

Ahah funny: you are saying that pirates have something traders want? No they don't. It is something imposed upon them that they want to get ride off.

Reading the threads about piracy somehow I get the impression that many pirates do what they do exactly because they want the their victim to demean themselves.

:) And your definition of piracy is? :) "Hello there young man. Any chance you see an old trader out and drop a few tons. I won't spend the profits on Wine or Liquor". It's piracy! Bullying, demeaning, demanding and aggressive. Nature of the beast.

I agree with everything you have written and most importantly the bolded part (because that IS what a pirate does)

The entire pirate profession is a mess due to lack of good pirate equipent and not beign able to stop many ships from simply boosting away.

But, piracy IS a crime and ther should bee "dangerous" just like the game is supposed to be, right now there is more risk to traders than pirates.

ALL of it needs to be fixed.

-Interdicted cargo drops should be stolen
-Illegal interdiction should be fined unless target is wanted
-pirates need tools to stop ships simply boosting away and frameshift, something that inhibits the ships frameshift drive
-pirates need tools to take out a ship without blowing it up

Right now there is little profit in piracy and also surprising little danger due to very few consequences.

Hell, loitering in a station is more dangerous.

How about stolen goods paying almost the same on the black market than on the open market (i.e. the fencing overhead being minimal), so that there is little monetary incentive to demand the cargo to be abandoned. Then selling stolen goods on the black market should increase one's reputation with any local criminal faction, so there is even an incentive to sell there and not the open market. The only downside then is to have to move the stolen goods past authority ships, but any pirate worthy of the title should be able to do that anyway.

I love the jetison abandon option espacialy when dropping lots of mines between the cargo cannistors .

cargo scooping should only be possible when shields ar down.

THIS. I remember it was the rule in older elite but then shields activates instantly.

Perhaps that could be an option. When cargo scoop activates the shield is "inactive" but not "off"

Well actually it should depends on the good. it makes sense to have cheaper goods on the black market if the system/station is also offering the goods legally. I mean, why would you pay a similar price and have troubles with the law?
On the other hand, the further the legal source of a good is, the more expensive the black market should be. Eventually some goods should provide pirates or smugglers a very high reward as black market might be the only way to get supplies.

If Frontier wanted to give the interdictor more time, they could - with a simple change to the short FSD cooldown timer duration when a player submits to interdiction. While this would give pirates more time to negotiate with their target - it would also give the player intent on simply destroying the target more time to do so.

Any device to disrupt the FSD would need to be able to be countered - for balance reasons, taking into account that there would seem to be many players who would wish to avoid combat.

The fact that Frontier have not made any changes to the timer or introduced anything that affects the targeted ship's FSD would tend to suggest that they are not inclined to make the interdictor's role any easier.

Here comes the cargo / instance limit increase....

If the Pirate demands you abandon the cargo
Abandon half and jettison half

I wouldn't remove the ability to abandon cargo
It is all part of the negotiations
"I can jettison the cargo, or I can abandon it and you give me free passage for the rest of the night" Kinda thing

Heck sometime it is good to contact pirates in game offer them a fee up front and have them pirate other people for you.
It has only worked once but it was a good laugh when you find a good place selling what a CG wants and dislike competition

Ah, sorry I see the problem. Just add player infant of pirates and what I wrote makes probably (hopefully) more sense. I get the impression that the players playing pirates are doing it to get other players to demean themselves.

In RL a pirate pirates to get money - demanding, threats and violence are a way to get the money. If you gave them a legal way to make more money with less risk and less work most RL pirates would probably stop pirating immediately.

It was a requested feature to allow friends to share cargo. But I can see how it can be abused by pirates. Not sure what the solution is - maybe it should only work for people on your friends list or in a wing, but even that could be abused too.

Ha ha, then the pirate would force you to wing up with him. He would not even become wanted by killing you :)
