Pausing game while in Solo

I find it annoying when wanting to pause the game that I am presented with a dialog that effectively says "Are you sure?", while my ship continues flying behind the screen. So I have two requests:

1. Could it be made possible to exit immediately to menu with a single key-press without requiring confirmation? (unless this already exists in the options - I'll check this in a moment)
2. When playing in Open, I fail to see the justification for not allowing a genuine pause even while in combat. Granted, the background simulation can't be paused, but if I'm hosting an instance for myself only, why shouldn't I be able to pause immediate gameplay etc so I can step away from the computer quickly?

My answer: This is absurd. You are not playing single player. You are part of the same LIVE universe. You are just effectively shadowbanned.

...

1. It's called combat logging :D, no one's there to report you, so combat log away. (I'm kidding, don't do it)
2. Sure, tell the elite server and all the players that either host/rely on your hosting to stop playing for a bit. I can see it already... Tell people that are trying to drop on your wake that your instance is "frozen."

Have you played other MMOs before?

I'm gonna die? I don't think so, *pause*. Then proceed to wait for days until the player in pursue logs off out of frustration.

Did you mean "Solo" here? I can totally agree with no pausing during Open or Group play, but during Solo? Yup, I can't see why a pause function couldn't be implemented. How would it affect other players or the BGS? It wouldn't, as far as I can see.

Edit: on further thought, the only place I think it could be a problem is in stations or areas which would be used by players in other instances. Maybe a solution would be to freeze the Solo player and NPC's in their instance, maybe make them invulnerable during "pause", but the station or surrounding area would continue to spin and orbit.

I'm turning in an assassination mission. Alarm goes off. Balls, I'm late for class PAUSE.
Come back from classes ten hours later. Turn in assassination mission.
This is silly in my opinion.

In what way is it "silly"? Mission timers are a separate issue, aren't they?

Why a separate issue? I thought we were talking about pausing the game.

The OP was talking about pausing the game for short periods whilst also admitting "Granted, the background simulation can't be paused".

So, pausing the Solo player's instance to enable telephone calls, post delivery, calls of nature etc while still leaving BGS stuff running.

Your still connected to a live server even in solo. Pausing the game is not possible or practical.

An option to not ask the 'are you sure' question each time you log to main menu would be nice

This issue is one of the things that got broken when compulsive multi-player was introduced (in the sence that even in Solo, I have to partake in the multi-player universe, I just don't see the other ships, that's all). If I take a mission, I can't shut down the computer and go to work/bed/dinner/real life because the clock, residing on some server, is still ticking. Because one can happily switch between Solo and Multi, things have to be synchronized all the time. While I sleep, faction influence changes, planets get explored and the likes. (Even in Solo, I can see that planet X was first found by Commander ABC). This has to be instantly visible to me (or so the game designers say), so I need to be synchronized. So they just can't stop the clock anymore.
.
I actually still believe this is the exact reason they this FSD/non-newtonian flight stuff was introduced. And the FSD will be the reason why I doubt we'll ever get seamless planetary landings like the old games had. (If anybody will ever ask me what broke Dangerous and made it rather a spin-off than a sequel to the Elite saga, I'll say "introducing a multi-player universe".)
.
Star Citizen is going to avoid this simply by allowing everyone to run their personal server. They're going have an off-line persistent universe. Which will mean one won't be able to switch beween online and offline and will probably be playing to different game instances at once - but to be honest, that's totally fine with me. That's how things always were for me as an old gamer. Either you played the game, or you did online-stuff which was its own world. I'm used to it.

I was under the impression that when in Solo your computer only contacts the BGS server whenever it needs to update something, eg. whenever you activate your FSD, buy or sell anything, complete any missions, etc.

When you are in your Solo instance then nothing is being updated, so why couldn't the Player and NPCs be paused?
