Imperial Eagle mk3?

Because, you know, a spoiler's downward air pressure helps keep its backend stuck to the road when it's cornering.... uh... bec uh... air pressure? road?

Don't start down that road else you'll be wondering why all the ships are aerodynamically shaped and covered with venturis and why the engines appear to have air intakes...

Lavecon reveal - it's an early concept of an imperial variant of the Eagle and as such is subject to change. The cockpit interior is more in keeping with imperial design ethos (blue lights!) and we were also show some concept art for the cockpit.

Again subject to change, the current thoughts are ( from the Frontier panel) that it will be faster, have heavier Shields, tougher hull, and the top hardpoint converted to a Medium, but it will be less manoeuverable than the current eagle.

It spun out of the success of the Diamondback, which demonstrated that existing ships could be readily modified to give slightly different variants.

So expect more variants of existing ships to come...

Fed Corvette coming Soon™

waiting to get my hands on the Imperial cutter (pls be something over-the-top cool) like anaconda and clipper had a baby-kinda thing :D and lots of lights. 'cos ppl love flashy lights. Altough I have somekinda hate against feds (like Malcom Reynolds have bad feelings toward alliance of united planets) And this is based on fed ship (which is based on FDe ship)... this might find a spot in my hangar :)

If there is a variant of the Eagle to be introduced I wonder how useful it might be. The Eagle has become a tad on the obsolete side :/

I'm not keen on the spoiler. IMO it should curve slightly and not be flat. But other than that, it looks good and fits with the lore.

Will it be balanced with the Corvette on release? Imperials are getting most of the fun toys, while the rest need moar!

Mike Evans said it has 2 small hardpoints underneath, as with the other Eagle, but the top hardpoint is a medium.

It also has stronger shields than the standard Eagle, but is slightly slower and less manouverable (though I seem to recall it might have a higher boost speed).

Of course, these things could change before release.

Also a better poweplant. :)

Huh, slower? The speed was the only thing that kept the Eagle non-viable in later content, particularly in PvP. That's an unexpected design choice.

The Federation have 3 faction ships compared with the Imperial 2, but two are sold on the open market due to Federal principles (Profit First). Just because they don't appear on the ranking structure doesn't mean they aren't Federal ships through and through. Get out of that silly box.

If a ship isn't exclusive to the Federation, it's not a Federation ship, whatever lore explanation you might wish to cook up.

Core Dynamics = Federation ship, no matter what excuse like exclusivity one might wish to cook up.

Though I'm aesthetically driven, so I see the ships and I see 3 Core Dynamics style and 2 Gutamaya. I don't really mind this, as it would be flavourful for a company like Core Dynamics to produce more models.

Lore and, importantly, design are important to the game, rather than just having the red and blue team, and grants flavour. Without it, we might as well get rid of all factions and re-introduce the Gal Co-op.

I think though, that Core Dynamics ships shouldn't be sold outside of Federal systems. It would make sense you would need to go to a Federation outlet to get them, but your rank will be used to 'get one over the system' and give discounts, and the Imperial ones wouldn't (not even for Gutamaya).

The Dropship should be better (or more attractive as a purchase) though, which I'm not sure passenger transporting will give. I actually think it's a nice looking ship, and my favourite of the current Core Dynamics offerings.

Underneath? You sure? those wing tips seem like a very decent weapon mount holder, Imperial trade mark no?

Core Dynamics ships are ships made by a corporation based in Federation space. They are not locked behind Federation rank, so they are not Federation ships. Lore just isn't particularly important in this game - and lore is not the reason why Core's ships are available to everyone, it's because having so many ships locked to one faction would clearly be a terrible idea.

Am I the only one here not so keen on having a medium hardpoint on the Eagle MK3? I'd much rather have nacelle mounted guns like on the Courier and the top mount removed altogether.

Exactly what I was thinking. Would be a shame to waste that opportunity. Those pods at the end of the wings just scream at you: "Put gun here!"

As to more ship variants expected to come, I vote for:

-A Cobra MK IV with 2 large hardpoints left and right of the cockpit instead of small and medium guns, and a slightly different cockpit canopy and hull shape. Should have similar boost speed to the MK III but a much stronger shield array, thereby ironing out one of its predecessor's main flaws. A modernized version of the popular ancient design.

-A Viper MK IV with 2 medium hardpoints left and right of the cockpit replacing the small nose mounted ones on the MK III, making it a dogfighting competitor to the FDL and Vulture.

-An Asp Enforcer, the military variant of the popular exploration vessel. Basically a heavily armored gunship.

Surly: The spoiler needs sufficient airspeed to exert a downward moment on the rear tires. It is an inverted airfoil. This increases the contact patch's effectiveness, so the back end will not spin out. At most civilian velocities (under 125 km/hr), spoilers do no good.

Core Dynamics are very much tied to the Federal president (who is a major shareholder), and even the company name implies Federation (the 'core'). Chances are FdL (we don't know if they are based in Mars or Reorte now), ZPG, Lakon Spaceways or Saud Kruger are based in either Federation or Empire space, but they are not 'Federal' or 'Empire' in the same way Core Dynamics and Gutamaya are. Apart from the player ships, Core Dynamics also make the Farragut and F63 too.

And who is anyone to say the lore (or design) isn't important? The topologies of the factions look different, and each have their own flavour. Ultimately, if you think Lore is not important, why do you care that the Federation are treated unfairly, if not for the ethos (i.e. lore/fluff) behind them or the aesthetic quality of them?

I agree having a load ships locked to faction (in terms of naval rank) isn't a good idea. I would rather Gutamaya ships and Core Dynamics ships be more regionally limited than rank limited (currently only Gutamaya are).

Lore isn't important as in lore has very, very little impact on the actual game - the exceptions being the unique ships and Imperial Slaves. Other than that, factions are completely interchangeable (something that Powerplay actually nicely improved upon). Lore is still important in the sense that it makes the game more fun, but it's clearly not a driving force between mechanics, including exclusive ships.
