Aye it's a bit of a hole. Oddly with exactly the stuff we want to know!

With that mission I'm assuming the place you visited had the crystals, it's just they didn't give them you. Rather you're passing on the knowledge that they exist.

Also the reward is poor for an Elite mission. Which is why previously I was suggesting that taking out this mission may trigger a UA spawn in a SSS in the target area, allowing an option for an increased the reward and tying in with the plot (ie Federal Navy is just leaving with the crystal source - a UA) +250,000 creds

Exactly this my playground right now. Because if a CMDR is able to take the combat SAP 8 mission:"Discret Redistribution" (think you have done this or at least CMDR Zenith) all is full
with SSS SAP 8 convois (former nothing) and not only in the mission target system also in start system and around. But nothing for me so far ...

I kind of like the miss jump idea, but I don't quite see how it fits with the morse.
Perhaps we enter a new kind of space and can jettison there? :)

If the misjump leads us to alien systems, it could also have the side effect of frying our normal navigational computer. We would have to use the morse to figure out where the hell we where, and maybe request help from other commanders. Just a guess, no basis on fact.

Also I agree that the AU needs to be taken somewhere, and I'm convinced that it's really far away from the system's star. I mean voyager level far. I feel like the myan numbers supports my theory.

Aye aye cap'n! I'll wager this UA can locate itself wherever it is ;)

Actually, let's say an FSD failure does do something interesting on a jump... What would happen to wingmates slaved to that FSD? That's back to Halsey again...

"Our drives were slaved to Starship One, as is normal. The entry to hyperspace seemed normal at first, but then there was a terrible shock wave and our ship started tumbling. We exited hyperspace uncontrolled and in deep space – something I’ve never seen before. Our ship had taken damage."

In Elite you sort of ended up between systems. Normal space, but no system.

Oh yeah, definitely sounds like it's something that's worth a crack - but which one of our intrepid UA carriers wants to volunteer (possibly) to die? They also might need someone to hold their UA while they prepare a freshly unwrapped Sidey to swap into...

Although re-reading your post, I notice that you provide a way simply to test the degradation theory... Which doesn't require a UA...
First they should make a jump without sacrificing their drive, just as i have described a few posts back.
Sap 8 and UA in cargo, and then a maximum possible jump (around 30 LY?)

I kind of like the miss jump idea, but I don't quite see how it fits with the morse.

also explained that, but here you go:

Based on the lore, the Thargoids were not aggressive. They tried to communicate with us.
But we attacked them, we ignored the attempts.
Then we got a communication device, but it was never used (political reasons, why communicating when you can get more followers by winning a war? build a huge army to defeat them?).
The Thargoids vanished and were never seen again.
Thats why i assume that the Witchspace is their home, its the biggest space there is and it would explain why we cant find them.
The UA sends Morse code as we know allready, but have you never wondered why it spells our Planetnames? Why do the Thargoids even know OUR names?
Thats why i think the UA is such a communicator, it accesses OUR ships computer and translates it into thargoid-morse, since they allready have a way to translate from Thargoid to Human.
Why dont they just talk to us? Maybe they assumed that we allready know what they want - communication, but we dont have the device to talk to them, so thats why they are sending them to us for basic translation.

Cool!

I was trying to convince an Elite explorer to give it a go back here : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=162998&p=2531603&viewfull=1#post2531603 but no-one bit. =(

It's just a hypothesis likely doomed to failure like all the rest, but give me a poke in game if you get any success! Then I can come and get one too! =p

If the UA is Thargoid, it is not strange that it can communicate with us. They know all about us. They even made the inter-species translator. It works. I have tested it.
From some GalNet articles, it would seem like the "peace with thargoids" branch of the FFE story was chosen.
If they send us a device like that, they are probably calling for help.

I think the morse has an in-game function. Not just a lore connection. There is no need for the Thargoids to tell us they know our language and planet names. They we know.
It could offcource be old Thargoid tec.

Now that is an interesting thought.

The Thargoids are getting attacked by other non human intelligence.

They are technology inferior to the new aliens and so have sent the ua out as a beacon calling for help from the humans.

If a miss-jump is required and the UA causes components to fail it would seem to make sense to keep jumping with the UA and don't repair any damage to the frame shift drive.

I can shoot someone's FSD out while it's charging if that's any help.

Of be shot at!

Anyway, it wouldnt hurt to test it, since it would include something like "destroying the UA" or something like that.
A simpe 30LY+ Jump with both of these things in Cargo.
So it cant harm them if they try such a jump ;)
If it doesnt work, then we have to search new and more informations.
They could include Painite and whatever else there is from these weird things.

If it works, then we can think about the "why"^^

I'm getting some guys together to try this. It might be a bit however. Let me know if you get results before I do.

Will do, Nilreb is online but he's not answered. If he does we''l give it a go if not no bother.

I just expect the jump to fail TBH.

But any fail is a success towards the goal if you know what I mean, so it's always worth doing. =p
