Achievements can be fun but they're very "gamey" and Elite falls more on the side of a simulation, I voted neutral as I'll just ignore the things if added but I don't think they really fit in with the rest of the game.

This is a good point. I still think that the fun would outweigh the gaminess for me.

Don't want them infecting my game at all. If I can switch them off completely and have no trace of them anywhere within my game (including not seeing other's achievements with respect to titles, colours, skins, items, etc) then I'm quite happy for others to have them. :)

I want to experience the sensible, lore-based "achievements" only - Profession rankings, reputations, military/faction ranks, etc.

Fully agree that it should be possible to make achis totally invisible if you prefer not to see them. Fly and let fly :)

I have voted yes, but I do not want Achievements in it's proposed form. I want in game lore friendly type of Achievements. Probably I should create a new thread about it, but tell me here what you think of it.

What I have in mind:

You reach certain milestone (Pilots federation rank). You get an in game mail from the Pilots federation which would congratulate you on such achievement. It would not play any stupid sound, explode in small stars around your head or anything like it. It would just be a simple congratulations from the in game high ranking NPC.

This can be then broaden up for factions, military, pirates, mining companies, explorers league etc. etc.

You could even get some invitations from faction representatives to join them for a dinner when the walk around expansion will hit. :)

No, no, no.

Military awards (ranks, medals, etc) yes,

but xbox-style game achievements NO!

I'm sure many of you are bored hearing about "immersion", but it is and always has been Elite's Killer App.

The suggestions on the front page: "Han would be proud! – Smuggle contraband goods into a station using Silent Running, without getting fined!" whilst creative, basically scream:

YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME, YOU'RE PLAYING A GAME.

(and that's a bad thing)

This is my feelings too, no thank you we don't want achievements, by all means add them to the Xbox version I don't care but please don't give us them.

Im sorry?
Are we playing this on consoles already?
The reason I stopped playing Xbox games was this pointless achievements and gamerscore rubbish
When you get an "achievement" purely for watching a games opening QTE and then starting to play it reduces the whole thing to utter pointlessness.
No thanks, I dont want to get an "achievement" for the likes of flying backwards for 1 light year.

I think that achievements are a good way to encourage you to do something that you hadn't done before or to try something fun but I do not want mundane things in there for instance if you are an explorer, I do not want to see the achievement to get you into trading like "congratulations you have bought and sold 1t for profit " but would prefer to see "Buy 10t of Lavian Brandy and sell it at least 40 ly away" or "Trade with at least 64t goods in one go for a profit" so that means that you have to get a large enough ship for trading and are more likely to try out that career plan. Other fun awards can be given like "smuggle in illicit goods by going into a station undetected (through a slot in silent running mode)" or fun things to get you to practice your flying skills like "do a loop the loop around the slot (as there is a circular wall there)".

Wasn't really an option for me, so i chose they would detract from my experience. I mean, not really, i just think achievements are for children who want a pat on the head every now and again to be told they have been a little good boy/girl.

Now, excuse me while i get back to grinding my way to Elite so i get to see that nice logo.... :p

Rather than looking or labeling such goals as achievements (as there is a bit of a stigma around them), maybe a better way to look at it in an ED context is a range of secondary missions.

There could be a back story to them, as in it could be part of a secret society within the Pilot's Federation that you are invited to, that offer special challenges and missions to pilots as they progress through their ranks. They could offer more than just a 'badge', but could unlock other things like additional story missions, special items, unique skin jobs etc etc. Maybe you need to read missions and get clues to finding hidden objectives or other triggers. Could function a little like the naval progression missions that appear, but essentially another secondary line of content people can choose to explore. This would make it more than just grind this or that, or try this and you will get a reward type of thing and offer some additional depth to the galaxy. Sure, if you play through Steam or Xbox then this might trigger an achievement or trophy but really would not be the main goal, and for those that do not like such gimmicks then they can choose to ignore them too.

Anyways just a thought, and another perspective on the subject.

I'd prefer them to be tied to the game and what actually happens in it, like a title for completing a CG as opposed to silly achievements just to have them in the game. Maybe if you play PP for a prolonged period of time or kill "x" amount of a Powers ships you might get "Scourge of the Federation" or something like that.
I also like the idea where if you complete some of long term goals or remain loyal to a power for a prolonged period, that you might unlock a special Skin for your ship. I'd love there to be proper emblems / decals for Powers as well and maybe specific colour schemes.

I'm not a big fan of the smaller achievements just for maxing up your speed in super-cruise etc, they just feel wrong for the type of game Elite is.
I also wouldn't like them tied to anything that may give a player any kind of advantage or induce any kind of grind for.
Just something aesthetic, and with regards titles, maybe just so the player has a record of what they've done. It doesn't need to be public.

Looks like Achievements have been confirmed for XBox version from David over the E3:

Wonder what they have planned?

I think every game for the xbox has achievements.. I hope they are well thought out, I hope they all encourage people to explore different parts of the game they may otherwise miss but things which ARE part of the game,

I hope they DO NOT encourage people to have to do things to act like berks just to get that achievement (kill x number of ships by ramming, kill Y number of pilots federation members in a streak without dying, or gain a bounty of X amount)

so long as they are well thought out I then hope they find their way over to pc, both as steam achievements and as frontier achivements (but with the option to disable them for those who have an issue with them)

Interesting to see XBox achievements already available. Thanks for sharing Janichsan!

Kinda was hoping there might be some more creative ones too added at some point.

I voted Neutral. I have no interest in achievements myself, but so long as they don't affect my game or give someone else an advantage for having them that I don't have for not having them, I don't mind players getting an achievement.
