Yeah, people really do try too hard with the cod psychology. Not being able to differentiate between a game and reality seems to be the greater disfunction.
Personally I restrict my cold blooded murder to members of opposing powers, but it's a cold, harsh galaxy and the sooner commanders learn to accept that and deal with it the sooner they can become better pilots. You are, of course, a complete scumbag and griefer![]()
This logic of the universe being a cold, harsh place seems quite idiotic to me, especially when placed in situations such as the OP's. That statement is more an excuse for crappy behavior, nothing else.
The universe, by nature, isn't cruel or harsh, it just is. But when it's filled with loathsome individuals that enjoy killing the first person they have ever seen and met, then yes it certainly contains cruel and harsh elements.
Crappy behavior? Excuse me? The only crappy behavior is playing open, getting blown up and then complaining you got blown up in open mode where ships have guns and can freely hurt anyone they choose. The OP didn't do anything crappy. He played the game as it was intended to be played.
If you want to play Elite... you accept the good and the bad. Running from the bad guy can be fun! There's a skill to evading them just as much as there is one for them hunting their prey.
And that's that. Say something once, why say it again?

On Vinyl. Because real psychos enjoy the finer things in life.![]()
Yep, that's my opinion. It's crappy behavior. Sorry it offended you, but, again it's my opinion.
You are correct about playing open. You are subject to any variable of circumstances. Of which, if you note, I wasn't distinguishing in my comment. Just the actions of the OP.
I just did it for the kicks really as it was the first player I have come across lol.
It is a cold, murderous galaxy however and I did mail him afterwards to apologise and offered for him to wing up and go bounty hunting
He has returned to the system I'm in!

The universe, by nature, isn't cold (in the cruel sense) or harsh, it just is. But when it's filled with loathsome individuals that enjoy killing the first person they have ever seen and met, then yes it certainly contains cold and harsh elements.
Realistically, the statement should be, "humans are a cold and harsh species, especially in a simulated environment ".
Given the circumstances irl, would you blow up the first person you've seen in a long time, without them provoking you, wasting valuable resources? Probably not.
It is, at least, commendable the OP apologized and extended an invitation to wing.
My statement quite obviously referred to the inhabitants of said galaxy rather than the galaxy itself. itselfI am guilty, however, of forgetting that one needs to state the blindingly obvious and illustrate it with crayons in order that some pedant doesn't attempt to score internet argument points by attempting to educate the masses.
As to your peculiar question; No, 'irl' I would not blow up the first person I ran across. I would be unlikely to blow up anybody since I believe that killing is ethically reprehensible and something to be undertaken only as a measure of last resort and in self defense. I would also be unlikely to find myself piloting a starship. Your experience may differ, of course. However, and this may have escaped your razor wit, this is a game. As such I don't read too much into people's penchant for random acts of virtual violence.
Passive aggressive sarcasm noted.
I didn't know I wasn't allowed to convey my thoughts and opinions in the manner I felt would elucidate it best. I'll make sure to keep things more colorful and simplistic in the future.
I understood your initial statement of the elite universe. The point of my post, and my opinion, is the more I see that statement used it seems to be to absolve the actions of someone's behavior, which may be considered abhorrent to others. I'm not stating you said as such, and my opinion was not a barb at you personally.
BTW, crayons can be a wonderful way to explain many things, and as an artist's tool. There's no need to denigrate them bc you freely associate them with being simple-minded.
Trying to work out whether an A5 shield is better than a D5 shield with 3 boosters hmmm.
Oi! less of the "OLD"Ohhh no, you mentioned the 'E' word. Expect lots of miserable old gits to appear and tell you that 'we' don't want this gae to be 'like that' and that this is 'not the game for you'.![]()
The first one feels dirty.
The second one feels okay.
The third one feels good.
And after that... you must feed!
D5 with 3 boosters is MUCH better:
Vulture -
A5: 391.95MJ
D5 w/ 3 0A SB: 511.94MJ
Though it should be noted that the power requirements are significantly higher with the boosters:
A5: 3.64 MW
D5 etc': 5.68 MW
A fairer comparison would have them both as close as possible to each other in terms of power use, which gives the A5 one 0B shield booster and the D5 two 0As:
A5 -
Power: 4.64 MW
Shield: 454.67 MJ
D5 -
Power: 4.48 MW
Shield: 447.94 MJ
As you can see, always better with the top rated stuff. You're saving a Utility slot, too.

Well today I took the evil step of cold blooded murdering a fellow player. To be honest, it was no contest my Vulture with C5 shields and 3 A boosters versus his Cobra.
I've apologized to the guy but I feel somewhat cruel and cowardly at such a heinous act...although it was fun him trying to ram me and only getting my shield ti half health while losing all his and going down to 43% hull.
My bad?
