Sarah, it may be time to tone it down a bit.

It's not a matter of timing down the lower ranks. It's a matter of an overall decrease of credits per hour, as lower ranks also have lower bounty rewards, meaning that if you effectively eliminate targets with 50,000 CR+ bounties as viable targets for those working their way up, you've also decreased earning potential in a game where upgrades are already very slow to earn.

One of the major complaints currently is boredom. By increasing the numbers of NPCs that must be "farmed" in order to move into the next ship upgrade, you're also increasing that boredom.

This doesn't mean AI upgrades shouldn't happen. I would just suggest that bounty reward levels be increased to match the new difficulty curve. If an Elite Anaconda is now a 50/50 toss up for a player in a similar ship, the reward should also be increased to be closer to the insurance rebuy of the ship.

That is why I suggested different ranks bring in different values. i.e. Harmless Eagle is worth way less than Elite Eagle.

Edit: I would add that my personal opinion is that Cobras if properly equipped should pose a threat to Anacondas. Ideally, an Anaconda attacked by a good Cobra pilot who brought along missile racks or especially torpedoes should be in a great deal of difficulty of his shields are brought down. Additionally, note that larger ships are receiving a survivability upgrade in 1.4 as power plants will no longer result in immediate destruction.

I also don't understand these arguments. How can you justify that a 25 million credit ship (that's about how much it costs to max out a Cobra) should be able to bring down a 300-500 million credit ship (about the cost of a Combat Conda)? Also missile racks and torpedoes typically don't work on NPC Conda's because they are always rocking point defense.

I may have a found a hole in elite AI ability.

I just unwisely took on an elite clipper in my diamondback scout. As it kept me permanently in it's sights I used maneuvering thrusters to try to evade its weapon arc (I failed and took a pounding), when I stopped maneuvering for a few seconds to fiddle with shield cell banks in a desperate attempt to keep my shields up I noticed it's fire was so accurate that the lasers were missing either side of my piddly little ship (must have been fixed weapons, reminded me of the x-wing in pre laser convergence lucas arts flight sims). I rapidly took it to pieces by only maneuvering up or down and keeping my cockpit level with his as his firepower wanged past on both sides, at point blank range.

Elite NPC's with a wide weapon spread should either fit some gimbals or aim off to effectively target smaller ships. I may regret suggesting this if SJA is still reading.

The best way to fight a clipper in a small ship is right in front of its face because the hard points on the wings are too spread out.

Who flies a 25M Cobra My Cobra maxed out is 8-10M. Don't waste money and power on an extreme FSDI.

The issue there is how much fun it really is to be involved in a tense, 20 minute combat with a highly ranked ship, barely winning, only to be rewarded with 75,000 Credits for doing so, and realizing how many more times you need to do that to upgrade from your current ship to the next.

would it not be better to take on lower class ships like Eagles and Cobras. Take one or 2 of them out every 3-4 minutes and earn about 150k in 20 minutes?

That's my point. 25m is about the most expensive you can make it but at your 8-10 million is more realistic, which only strengthens my argument. An 8-10 million credit ship taking out a 300-500 million credit ship. Ridiculousness

Edit: 13milion was the most I could get the Cobra up to. I over estimated how much my old one cost.

For justification i can point you to several real life vehicles and weapons designed to take out a far larger target.

Exhibit A: WW2 dive bomber vs battleships.

Cost between vessels should never justify if A can win over B.

One of them will have on hell of a difficult time of it but in the end it should come down to pilot skill.

After all, should a Clipper at 30 million not be able to take put a Type9 because its more EXPENSIVE...

Your dive bomber/battleship comparison is a good one. I would argue 1 dive bomber wouldn't be successful though. It would take mulitple dive bombers to take one out that would drive up the cost...albeit not to the same price. But I also wouldn't be opposed to 4 cobras taking out a Conda.

Your Clipper/T9 comparison is bad because a Combat Clipper is around 115 mil when combat fitted and a T9 costs about 105 million as a trade ship. Plus one is combat and the other is trade so we are not comparing apples to apples anyways.

What if the dive bomber was piloted by an expert and Mr Bean had the helm of the battleship ?.

A badly flown expensive ship should be vulnerable.

I feel bad for the Navy that has Mr. Bean at the helm but it likely still wouldn't sink it. Battleships were very very hard to sink and would go blow to blow with other ships for hours before they sank.

Standard military procurement technique is to get three bids and go with the lowest. You'd be surprised just how broken and jury rigged military gear is.

Edward McCullen one of Englands premier WW1 flying aces died when his brand new issue plane's engines failed, cheap parts, cheap labour, dead hero.

The AI loves to concentrate fire on you when you enter the conflict zone.

Just boost away from your entry-point until you leave the "hot bubble". Then turn around and figth the one ship that migth follow you. When you re-approach the battle, everything is fine and you may participate in the now more fun (due to Sarah's efforts) fighting just as usual.
Every now and then, some ships will concentrate fire on you again and you will have to (temporarily) retreat. But this is how it should be, imo.

Really, I don't think the AI is too hard now. We just have to adopt our tactics to the increased challenge.

Agree AI doesn't need toned down. I was shocked when I got interdicted in my ASP by a lone Python, and within 2 passes shields were down. 3rd pass Hull was at 76% and I popped like a stuffed tick....powerplant failure. WOW.

BUT I do hate how you come into a RES and everyone is shooting at eachother.... then you come in and they forget they hate eachother and only focus on you. I must be a real bad-azz for them to be that ticked at me ;)

Flying a Vulture I never experienced too many AI teaming up against me.
Maybe AI reacts differently based on your ship's size ? Ie. big ship = big troubles, smaller ship = less AI turning against you?

It would just destroy any sense of personal choice and diversity if players could just climb to the most expensive ship and be, not just feel, safe from the lower cost ships. The fact that almost any ship is a threat one on one allows people to stay competitive out there.

The larger ships offer many advantages over smaller ships. More power, more module slots, more armor ect. Being effectively invulnerable to cheaper ships would be a step way too far.

There is a counter argument for every argument. My thoughts will not change. 1 eagle or 1 viper or 1 cobra shouldn't be able to take out 1 Conda. Multiples of any of those ships I am fine with. The purpose of improving the A.I is to make it more human like in reactions and ability. That has always been the goal. The Dangerous in Elite: Dangerous. I think they should have more care for their mortality as well. If 4 cobras pull over a Conda it should try to fight them and should be able to take out 1 or 2 (if not all of them) but if it starts to loose it should try to leave, just like a CMDR would, and the CMDR's attacking it should be trying to disable it, just like they do when they fight other CMDRs. You know how many CMDR's I have "beat" without killing them? Sure my skill has increased because of it but because I didn't get the kill my rank did not. I need to improve my skills to start making "beat" = "kills" and I am okay with that.

It was never intended to be a FPS were they throw a bunch of stupid NPC's at the player and the player can have a blood bath of killing ships. If that what you expected from the game you purchased the wrong game.

has there been an AI tweak this morning..? last night = moderate, steady combat in a ldz, this afternoon, same ldz = handed to me in 2mins like i was flying an e graded cobra, i actually had a double check moment, an thought 'i can't possibly be in my vulture' as i went boom.. insurance window confirmed i was though lol

Possibly. She did say she had a new update to the AI that she was going to introduce soon. Probably in today's update.

Or maybe it was WW1 and powered aeroplanes were an 11 year old phenomenon, early aero engines were crazy designs, the engine generally rotated around the cylinders (rotary engine) and were very unreliable.

Today's update is server side, so data. SJs update would need to be the client I think.

I guess if you go into a combat zone you're laying yourself open to get fried by those naughty NPC's. If you stay away from such places you'll still get interdicted by some nasties but you generally won't have so many to deal with. If attacked by multiple NPC's, pick a weak one and concentrate on that whatever the others may be doing - the name of the game is to reduce the opposition numbers. If they're doing serious damage to your hull - time to depart. Defensive builds buy you the time to make those choices - improve your power distribution, bulkheads and shields. Outside of combat zones and in friendly territories the plod will often turn up to help you if you can survive long enough - but, then again, they might not ;-)
