CAn anyone link a simple to a simple WAV file of the UA (just the sounds it makes). I looked on the wiki but A. the wiki seems to slow my system to a crawl and B. there just seems to be links to YOu tube.

Cheers in advance.

There is the sound recording I've been examining lately, about that background Sound:

It's taken from Ratking15 video, in 20 Ophiuchi, the Plagued System.
This is the corresponding video:

the only problem i see in speeding up the sound to like x10 is that if you want to have a good section you need to record it for a long time.

Trying to think outside the box here...could " Have you listened to it?" be the hint itself? I've been googling the phrase, not having much luck though. Maybe "not everyone will get it" indeed refers to the lore, or maybe another popular reference that some of us won't be familiar with? Sci fi movie quote? Book? TV show? Ring any bells with anyone? Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy popped up in my searches but I couldn't spot anything significant, but I didn't watch the show either. Any thoughts?

Listen to it could mean what does it want.

Well what do we know it wants? It does cause damage, maybe what it wants is to kill? So maybe we should listen to it?

I know some have possibly been sold on accident, but has anyone let it kill them? maybe it needs the explosion to set it off?

sorry if this has been posted, so many pages, but hadn't seen any mention of letting it go nova.

Never noticed how the 'purrs' get faster and faster over time, but it's really obvious in the speeded up version

In the early days someone said it was a countdown...
EDIT: and it gets higher and higher in tone, a higher note on every tick

Lol

Lla ruoy esab era gnoleb ot em!

Seriously tho...please someone please tell me we tried it backwards?

Badger! I hear you giggling at the back, don't think I can't., detention for you.

Yes, someone did it in the early days and nothing particular was there. But it is long time ago and not all those many ears as now...

I asked this earlier in the thread but I'll ask again.
Can anyone actually confirm selling a UA, accidentally or otherwise?
People assert that they have been sold but I've not seen anyone explicitly say they have sold a UA themselves on either thread.
(Other than 'I and I Redeye' who can't confirm it was actually a UA he sold.)

Just created this account so I can post. Sorry to jump in like this but I've been reading/lurking for a while now.

I've been thinking along the lines that it would be a straightforward thing rather than requiring deep audio analysis and cryptology. The hint from FD was to listen, just that. I've also been thinking that the purrs are more important than the chitters. First I thought there was a code there, maybe ascii, binary. Been looking into that without luck. Also I thought maybe something along the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind comms. Anyway, enough preamble..

Just listened to the speeded up clip provided by bitstorm and I think I have it. I think (ducks for cover, but I'm serious) we're hearing the sounds of the old "Space Invaders" arcade game, or something very like it.

a) I'm always suspicious of anyone who "knows someone who knows someone in the know..." ;) but nevertheless...
2) "not everyone will get it" makes me think the "listen to it" is based on an in-joke or in-lore reference.

The fact that both clues are worded the same (i.e. not "it's to do with the sound..." or "it's the noise it makes, but just listen to it) kinda backs this up. Assuming you're of a paranoid, conspiracy theorist bent.

Dude.

I don't blame you.

I think if i was reading this from someone else id probably be the first to call !

We've been assuming "them" is the Unknown Artefacts themselves. But Michael has been careful in his wording in the past. He didn't say "the artefacts", "them". So maybe it has nothing to do with the sound/appearance of the Unknown Artefact themselves. Then the question is: who is "them"?

To me, the criteria is any in-universe character or faction who mentions artefacts of this kind. This could be from the trailer (which would fit the "some people wouldn't get", as in people who haven't seen the trailer), GalNet or one of the books (I've only read Reclamation & Out Of Darkness, neither of which mention anything like this).

I have an Orca in storage, would be willing to bring it out to do a listen test. I'd also be willing to sell my UA at Leonard Nimoy, at least to put the trailer & sale theories to bed.

@kulin is it just me or are there actually three types of purr?

I've not been looking at this for a long time, but in the original recordings by digital scream there are up to 4 distinct tones in the purrs but these only ever occur before the second howl. After the second howl there is only ever 2, which slowly increase in pitch throughout the recording. Some assumed this meant the 'message' had a header that was different to the rest of the message. The number of purrs in these first sections, the the timing between the howls was also sometimes different to the rest of the recordings which added to the header theory.

I'm just happy to have clues. Considering how half-baked (pun intended) some of my theories* have been, it's good to have fresh input!

* "Has anyone tried mating with it?"
