Just created this account so I can post. Sorry to jump in like this but I've been reading/lurking for a while now.

I've been thinking along the lines that it would be a straightforward thing rather than requiring deep audio analysis and cryptology. The hint from FD was to listen, just that. I've also been thinking that the purrs are more important than the chitters. First I thought there was a code there, maybe ascii, binary. Been looking into that without luck. Also I thought maybe something along the Close Encounters Of The Third Kind comms. Anyway, enough preamble..

Just listened to the speeded up clip provided by bitstorm and I think I have it. I think (ducks for cover, but I'm serious) we're hearing the sounds of the old "Space Invaders" arcade game, or something very like it.

You are a genius! It is indeed!
People, I'm serously thinking we have to shoot at it until it dies! Exploding it will "open" and reveal something, like the power pod of the old video games!!!!!!

This second 10x one is actually really interesting.

Listen closely Rizals ambient noise throughout, listen how it comes in and out, and it goes as the purrs stop.

Listen through the 4th and 5th cycle you can hear the volume being dropped on the ambient noise and the purrs but only just, the purrs last throughout.

Ditto! I've just been trawling through youtube videos of old games (Atari/amiga etc), and it was space invaders that got me thinking that way too! Not found the right game yet but maybe its out there? That would explain the clue about only some people getting it i.e. you need to be of a certain age and have played this one?

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=141038&p=2160913&viewfull=1#post2160913 - "Have you tried listening to them?"

We've been assuming "them" is the Unknown Artefacts themselves. But Michael has been careful in his wording in the past. He didn't say "the artefacts", "them". So maybe it has nothing to do with the sound/appearance of the Unknown Artefact themselves. Then the question is: who is "them"?

To me, the criteria is any in-universe character or faction who mentions artefacts of this kind. This could be from the trailer (which would fit the "some people wouldn't get", as in people who haven't seen the trailer), GalNet or one of the books (I've only read Reclamation & Out Of Darkness, neither of which mention anything like this).

I have an Orca in storage, would be willing to bring it out to do a listen test. I'd also be willing to sell my UA at Leonard Nimoy, at least to put the trailer & sale theories to bed.

Well if 'them' is the pilots from the Wings trailer then that leads us to...
...sell the artefact at Leonard Nimoy station!!
(I'm starting to sound like you-know-who now, amn't I?)

But seriously, if you have an Orca then it is worth testing things with it, just because.
(BTW, the Wiki isn't explicit, has anyone listened to their ship carrying a UA *inside* the hold while silent running is engaged, as this seems to heighten the sound around you.
Can we hear anything by doing that?)

I would hang onto your UA for the moment.
I've spent the last couple of weeks searching for a UA with the sole purpose of selling it at LN (as have a couple of others, I believe).
If in another week nobody has discovered a new UA, then I think it would be worth selling one at LN to conclusively answer this question.

The more I listen to it, I'm getting more convinced that it's Space Invaders slowed down. The whale noises are the laser shots. The pitch rises and the sound speeds up as the invaders get closer to the bottom in the game. I think this is a clip from somewhere near the end of a level where there'll be lots of "purrs" per shot.

Guilty as charged

It seems we are no closure to cracking this thing. An I really think we do need a clue from Frontier now, we are just going around around circles.

i wish i knew of a way to input audio to google and search for something similar like you can with pictures

Googlebot has just picked that up, drawn up a plan for a proof of concept, triggered the search for a team of people to work on it in their 20% time, and in 5 days it'll appear as a beta feature in their search.

Space invaders... But what does that mean? That aliens know our culture and is taunting us by sending us sound clips of old alien invasion video games?

And here's the 20x!

Look I dunno, the 20x really sounds like it's building to something, almost like a bomb!

But nano-virus/plague bomb?

Daygobah would love this pity he couldn't stay civil. =(

Maybe it's charging up, given time that head will open up and send a beam in some direction or other!

Perhaps it's trying to get to 12 purrs/cycle.

I would now really like to hear an extended version, like there's a bit of a risk but scoop at 5%.

There is no way to prevent a cannister exploding short of scooping it up is there? I mean if we could keep the UA purring for longer somehow.

Does a canister degrade inside an air-locked Coriolis?

This really sounds like space invaders. :D

Omg!

Btw: You get much more purr-sequences, if you record in a system with a very short name. :D

But ... if i think about it.. you're already in sol and at mars. Cannot get much shorter. :D

Still sounding space invadersy to me, even at 20 times speed! As the aliens get closer they speed up and as Kyp Shard says, the speed at which you can shoot doesn't change relative to this. If we could just find the right speed to match it to it would perhaps be telling...

Okay, so I was all thinking "Pff, Space Invaders? Really?" then I listened to the 10x sample and it actually is REALLY like Space Invaders!!!

But where does that get us?
Do we need to shoot them all?
WAS DAYGOBAH RIGHT ALL ALONG?!?!

So perhaps

Number of purrs indicates something about the local body.

Over time the "speed" of the purr track increases. It seems the low purrs stay the same pitch throughout while the high purrs increase in pitch over time. In other words the difference in frequency between high and low increases.

Isn't this kind of how a discovery scanner works? That orange icon spins, the pitch and frequency it makes increases till after <X> seconds its finished its scan and reports back.

It's like we have to somehow get it into a position where it can finish a scan, but not sure how.

AFAIK the discovery scanner completes quicker the nearer you are to a body but weve tried the UA literally right next to planets haven't we?

Given the pitch speed of the purr track (and therefore the number of purrs) increases over time (like a DS) it does now almost seem like a warmer, warmer, warmer, hot, bingo! type thing.

Perhaps it wants a certain type of planet? Have we actually gone to the point of ticking off planet types one by one?

Thargoids might be space invaders so maybe it's just a bit of an in joke? Though I still think there's another game from the dim and distant past that it reminds me of, it's just tracking it down....or maybe its the right computer system version of space invaders we need to find that would make a better match?
