what do you miss from the Original Elite?

The ability to steal ships would be nice, it might be something that will come when (if) they implement first person gameplay with ship boarding elements. But so far I think FD really wants us to work for a long time before we can get an expensive ship ; it would be too easy if ou were in a Sidey and ganged up on an Anaconda with friends, only to board it before it blow up and using it for yourself. You would lose the sense of progression, which so far is the main motivation for people to carry on playing.

That being said, it could be balanced since you would not have money to buy upgrades and weapons, and would fly without insurance...

I miss of course,,

1. Planetary landings

2. MB4 Mining machine

3. Fuel scooping of gas giants

4. Continued Military Missions. Photography and Nuclear mission.

5. Ship crew

6. Escape pod

7. Planets orbit simulation in time, in systems.

8. Larger Hyperspace Clouds ( not a Little dust cloud as it is now)

9. Panter Clipper and Tiger trader ship.

10. Missjumps (even if those could be fatal) :D

11. R.I.P Death sequence :)

12. License/Registration number on ships so you can se the number Before you buy the ship.

13. Passenger Missions.

14. Human face interaction when communicating with a stations eg are docked.

15. Rear and turret look. You could actually jump to a turret position and operate it manualy.

16. Military medals.

17. Wormholes.

18. Energy Bomb :D

Only items 6, 10 and 11 of your list in the original Elite. ;)

But yes, most of those FE2/FFE features you listed would be most welcome in E: D too. :)

The only thing I miss is the friendly atmosphere from back then, that the Internet has eroded away...

Just noticed this.

That's quite a negative outlook - be thankful of the internet as it also brings together people of like minds and ideas.

Incidentally people have always been good & bad only back in '84 there wasn't a way to tell someone else about it - at best an incident made the local TV news; national if it was spectacular. Today, you fart and someone blogs about it  That means then you're exposed to more of the negative side of humanity, something which has always been there but you back in '84 were protected from as you didn't have a medium to spread the word.

Shut up bird brain! :p ;)

I don't think you were ever able to upgrade ship manoeuvrability in the original game but a lot of the others ring true....

Who needs docking computers? Docking is easy! I won the speed docking challenge in the Retro Lave show at LaveCon in the old Elite and docking in the new version is considerably easier!

You definitely couldn't steal someone's ship in the original either.... I don't recall unlimited expansion either.... Thinking on this... what do YOU call the original version? For me it's the 1984 BBC Micro version....

For me I miss some of the original ships and would like them to be implemented now... not soon™ ;)

I also miss the difficulty of it in some ways...

And... of course... THARGOIDS!

It was possible to actually die in the original Elite, and in FE2 and FFE - you got the spinning tombstone, which meant progress was meaningful.
I stlll play the original Elite on an emulator but I don't think there is a good way of comparing ED with Elite when it comes to features. They are different games. Possibly the main difference for me is that Elite was about the challenge of surviving, it was a wonderful blood pumping game that you had to be completely involved in. ED is about enjoying eye candy and relaxing, even in combat.

Excellent point.. I'd forgotten about this... How on earth would the entitled masses cope today with losing everything in one fell swoop and having to start again?

Aye my list refers to Elite frontier game and not the very first one :) (Even if the topic was around original Elite. i would like to have this features as well in ED )

I seem to remember that you had your gold and was it 'precious gems', which you carried on your person, so you didn't need the cargo space for them and you could really wait to sell at the right time.

Yes: Gold & Platinum in kg and Gem-stones in g.

I miss...

Escape Capsules

In the original Elite you had to specifically buy an 'escape capsule' from a level 6 or higher Tech world which would be tracked by the nearest habitable planet and safely provide guidance to the nearest Coriolis space station. This came with insurance meaning you got a new Cobra class ship. Any cargo you had on your old ship would be lost but you got to keep your cash. Ejecting also meant clearing your Police record as the record was tied to the ship ID code.

Of course if you didn't replace your cabin with an escape capsule and you were destroyed you were tombstoned; start the game from scratch...ED definitely needs this. It annoys the hell outta me when you keep getting fines for 'murdering' an NPC or another player - they aren't murdered, they do a Cylon number and awaken on the resurrection ship :D just like you and I do - no wiped record and a nice replacement ship if you have the insurance.

It was never possible to get other pilots to eject and steal their ship/incarcerate the pilot to sell as a slave...your thinking of the X3 games there (though I do like that gameplay ;)).

Tech Levels
There were different tech levels worlds had reached, this had a direct effect on what items were available for purchase at the stations orbiting those worlds The higher the worlds tech level the more advanced items available.

The Wolf MkII
From the Amiga version of Elite.

- Thargoids
- Sudden Thargoid ambush in Witch-space
- Rear and side windows
- Rear facing fixed weapons (which you could fire from the rear window)
- Powerful missiles
- Condition Red! text
- The Blue Danube music

:S

I thought E: D docking computer plays Blue Danube?
Oh. I guess I should try the docking computer then. I have never even thought about getting it as I'm so good at flying, and I enjoy doing perfect dockings. In the original Elite I listened to the music at the start screen where ships spinned.

Basically, if ED had looked at the X series, which expanded upon the original Elite concepts, and built itself up from that feature list...

On a related note, X3's "Lost Lar" starting scenario puts the entirety of Elite to shame in terms of raw challenge. If nothing else was added or changed, I would LOVE to see that level of raw challenge and tension in Elite: Dangerous. I think ED is one of the easiest sandbox space sims I've ever played; the only space sim I've played in which the greatest threat is... minor accidents.

-stealing ships. In the original Elite you used to be able to wear down a ship to the point of getting the pilot to eject, capture him/her in your cargo and then steal their ship which you could then sell or keep. This would open up the idea of missions where you could be paid more to bring someone in alive?

I bought the original Elite the day it was released and played it day in, day out for several years and I don't remember doing that once, I think you are mistaken.

Yeah, you could force them to eject, then scoop the escape pod - it counted as 1t of slaves. Can't quite remember if you could were able to hand them in after you docked for a reward or if it was just whatever the going price for slaves was...but you definitely couldn't steal their ship in Elite '84... And nope, I'm NOT thinking of the X games - I never played those. It was DEFINITELY in Elite.

Things missing from Elite that I would love to see are:

1) Krait - this ship is the only one I would buy and stay with its the main ship I flew in Frontier and FFE yes its easy to kill BUT its the risk compared to everything else I would love to see.

2) Thargoids - yes they are coming but what shape or form is anyones guess

3) Rogue asteroids - sometimes you came across a asteroid making its way through the system.

4) Prices at a glance - currently the stock market can show 'imported from' 'exported to' etc which doesnt help what about last prices at last visit?

5) Anarchy systems being real pits of despair for anyone but hardened veterans

6) Original core Elite systems having one planet, one station and one sun. Now Leesti's stations seems lys from its orbiting planet whats up with that. In Elite ya launched from the station and was almost on the surface ;). Also stations used to point directly at the planet they were orbitting.

7) Scooping was a legitimate cash flow

8) every sun was scoopable so no getting stuck anywhere

9) Energy bombs for those last resort nukes

10) "Systems under military interdiction" - for systems you werent supposed to go into. Now its stupidly 'permit required' when you know full well you wont get a permit for Polaris, why not put them under interdictions.

11) Criminal record - yes it would be nice to see what I have done ;)

12) Permit violations - being able to go anywhere that required a permit but have the 'risk' of being killed for doing it at present ED feels like a kid gloves version of Elite where we are prevented from going somewhere because were told to.

13) Spanners in the works ( Forced misjump) - would be nice to be able to do that and whizz off anywhere.

14) Missiles being shown on ships hulls - everything is internal now so doesnt look brilliant

15) BBS systems - I want the old Frontier /FFE BBS as it was much better than the ED text wall

16) Sting operations - as with 15 you had police stings

17) Internal space - we didnt have mounts we had internal space. Each ship could carry x amount of stuff and each item had a weight you can choose how you want your ship to be fitted up then go from there. We could have ships with a excellent jump range just not much else but now its 'has to fit on x mount' surely 50 years has ruined loads of Elite/Frontier/FFE systems and ideas.

Just my small list I would like to see brought back into ED but I know it wont be as they have most of the mechanics down already and its FDEV's show.

I'm not sure about forcing them to eject, I believe it was a purely random thing but yeah, you certainly couldn't steal their ship.
