Being picky... Galnet writing style - professionallism

Firstly, I apologise if this seems overly picky. But the last Galnet update, regarding "The Code leaves Archon Delaine's Crew..." just pushed me over the edge and I have to say something in the hopes a CM will notice and at least pass it on.

I know a lot of the Galnet stuff is fan submitted, it's a good idea and takes some of the load from FD. But can we please at least have someone thoroughly proof reading and formatting this stuff before it goes live to tens of thousands of people?

Nothing is more jarring than reading in game content, hoping to be immersed in the universe, and coming across shifting tenses and points of view, poor grammar, punctuation and so on.

Please don't think I'm a grammar (haha, this word was removed automatically by the system, you can probably guess what it was!), I don't care about the spelling/punctuation/grammar of others in social media and forum posts. But Galnet is not a social media site, it's supposed to the galaxies premier news service... right? :p All of my journalistic friends know how to write rather well and their editors certainly do at the very least.

To be fair, from what I can tell, all of the material written by FD itself does seem to be good quality, which makes the fan submitted items all the more jarring and unappealing to read. I'd suggest that FD place a general disclaimer or at least an automated response to those who submit pieces for Galnet advising that their work may be edited for clarity and consistency.

I hope this doesn't draw any fire, I'm an educator at heart, sorry, it's just in my blood

galaxy's. yes. I spotted it afterwards, but as I said, social media etc, I don't mind so much. I'm not here for immersion :)

Edit: That is kind of funny though, I feel like a broken record to my students some times... "Where do we put the apostrophe?! Ownership and contractions!"

Hm. I agree that sometimes the posts that make it onto the service are too informal or straight-up error-filled. And, yes, it is somewhat jarring. A proofreading pass over player-submitted items would be nice to have.

The player-made news is probably more proofread than the officially-sourced news. This has been a small yet noticeable thing since forever ago.

Hello. I am Commander Bartmoss, and I approve of this message. Whether I am exploring out in the black, running missions or trade goods, or mindlessly mining; when I read broken tense in the Galaxy's foremost - and only - news service, I get cramps in my stomach. And not always have I Leesti Evil Juice at hand to cure such ailments. So please; help us prevent digestive problems before they occur. Hire an editor.

Hi everyone,

I’m sure you’re all familiar with the GalNet newsfeed in game and how we’re using it to provide updates on the various storylines currently active in game. We want to expand the newsfeed to include more player generated news and particularly upcoming events. As part of this process you can submit a news item for consideration by posting in this thread. To submit a news item simply post with the following:

- Date and time for the news item/event
- Title – this should be brief and include the location
- Description – This should be no more than 150 words
- Commander Name

There are a few rules that need to be followed for submissions:

- Only submit a news item once
- We’ll pick which items are suitable – don’t be offended if we don’t use yours!
- We will edit the text if needed to make it fit with the game
- Legal protection – we own the copyright of the text we use in game

I look forward to receiving your news and events!

Edit: The process is changing to allow us to use more current news items that are posted. These items will be used as local news and local news will be available in English only. We'll still pick some items for global news, but these ideally need to be an announcement in advance or not time sensitive so they can go through our edit and translation process.

Michael

I will just drop this here. Other than that i have no opinion

Agreed OP. I thought it was some kind of joke, especially the quote that made Archon seem like a troublesome high-school student. I was just waiting for a "O NO THEY DIDNT!!!" or something to complete the effect.

The most egregious errors aren't even submitted by players.

Thanks for sharing. So essentially FD does warn Commanders that their texts will be edited if necessary. I'd like to see more of that then ;)

Considering FDs own posts often being full of spelling mistakes, I'd be careful with that wish. Remember - they're the company who released the game with countless stations still named XYZ's Hanger.

+1 from me.

I love seeing player-submitted stories, but I would love them even more if they were all consistent in terms of writing style, formatting, grammar, etc.

You typically see this when the proofreader is either a) lazy or b) ESL*.
Pick one because there are no other reasons/options as to why this keeps happening.

Just read the Code story, whilst I can see past the spelling errors I don't like the way Delaine is charactised. Apparently one of the most feared pirates in occupied space talks like a dudebro "sweeeeet tech" I mean really. I'd personally expected a personality closer to someone like Top Dollar in The Crow., not some surfer dude who gets all excited about the rad equipment and gnarly pirating maaan. I just hope FD really carefully vets any Thargoid related stories. They can ask about Ovaltine but hopefully not instances of LOL.

I noticed the writing style and spelling errors in the news as well. It boggles my mind how FD allowed it to be published like that. Maybe it was a simple mistake and someone published the original version instead of the corrected one.

+1 Rep

most longer gal-net articles are dull to read. when i manage to stay awake (on that short texts) the content is mostly interesting. i assume that my reading difficulties come from missing formatting and grammar.

that would be a nice addition: add some "fancyness", some "style" to galnet.

(i don't care for misspellings, but grammar and formatting can really improve galnet)
