Can I ask the people in the non-PL camp why they don't want PL in? Is it because the thought is that FD is wasting resources on it? I'm guessing it's something along the lines of "there's not enough content in the main game so add that first". Or is it because they think it's because it's boring?

Isn't it possible that Frontier have multiple teams working on multiple projects, one of the many of them being PL? What is it that you have to lose by PL being in the game? Or is it something you're not gaining?

Personally I absolutely want PL in there but only if it is done right........ My worry is if it is rushed out (some may say like the rest of the game was) it will take the shine off it. Also given for most players this will be a paid extra I worry some may consider FD are jumping the gun a little and would prefer all hands on deck realising the kickstarter dream outline in the DDF.

All that being said if it IS PLs I will be v excited as well as v worried :)

But you have to remember that not everyone thinks core features are missing. I didn't come from the 84 generation, nor the FFE generation (although I was born in 84) so I never had the chance to see fan favorites that were not included here - and I'm sure I'm not alone. To me, this game has all of the core features as it currently stands. I've seen other games far worse off for the same amount of money. Anything else that's not included and added later is more icing on top. Not trying to be disrespectful in the slightest, I just don't understand why anyone would be against it (any and all additional content including PL).

Same here. Never had the fun of playing the original, was not part of the FFE either. I would not say that ED as it stands now is perfect and that improvements cannot be made but I'm really enjoying the game for its current core elements. I'm still sometimes marveling when flying near a new planet or coming from an angle and seeing the reflection of the nearby star on a planet I've seen before. I'm still marveling when coming out of a hyperspace jump, I catch a huge star eruption that is animating. That's incredible! Or just moving the camera around my ship and seeing the reflection of the lights around it, how it is finely rendered. I can imagine that for players of the original Elite, and for the players that have clocked several hundreds of hours in the game, it might not feel great anymore but I've been clocking quite a few hours myself since the Mac version came out and I'm still marveling at those things. So, it's not like I'm missing anything right now. I think that people should take the time to stop and enjoy those moments.

Just my $0.02...

if planetary landing is announced tomorrow, I'll be very happy and I don't care what the price will be. day 1 buy for me, regardless!

although I have one reservation, it has to be like Frontier and seamless. if they stick loading screens in there or have a limited "path" you can only use then I won't bother.

I hope there is skill in it either by having a drop ship sequence like in the film aliens OR there is a skill to it and we have to calculate how to line up our fradgectory to stop us either burning up in atmosphere or bouncing off it.

Imo there will have to be a sequence of some description otherwise it will take hrs to get there. Thanks to multiplayer we can't have accelerated time like past games

I completely understand what you are saying, but to be honest (and I'm no aerospace engineer here) aren't there already limited areas (IRL) that you can enter and leave the atmoshpere and magnetic fields around planets? I mean, today we don't launch spacecraft directly over our poles, right? Is that strictly for geopolitical reasons (i.e. ICBMs travel over the poles) or is there an actual engineering reason for that? If the later, then I'd like to see something like that reflected. That would make identification of the axis of rotation for a planet very important!

I'd love that and I suspect most Elite-Frontier players would, sadly I'm willing to bet my shirt that it will not be like that, imagine the forums a day after release, 500 crying threads because people destroyed their ship during re-entry. The game has to be playable by the dumb masses so cool stuff like that won't ever be in. yes its a huge shame but that's modern gamers for you, cannot ever cope with failure, everything has to be winwinwin. :(

I take my hat off to FD for keeping everything a secret for so long. Not a leak anywhere as far as I can see. However, there are a few pointers.....

DB has tweeted a picture of a Cobra MKIII on a rocky surface.
He also tweeted a picture of a strange looking cloud.

MMMmmmm..... Pretty obvious don't you think?

We usually launch near the equator to save fuel. Before the test ban treaty it was planned to launch nuclear powered spacecraft from the poles.

We launch from as near the equator as possible (and not the poles) so we can gain free momentum from the Earth's rotation. The big difference between the Elite universe in 3301 and our universe in the present day is we are very fuel limited. Our fuel is very heavy and we use just about all of it on launch. This is also why we rely on sending ships into orbit and must achieve escape velocity to send probes away from the earth (otherwise the vehicle would just fall back to the ground when it ran out of fuel). We need every bit of free propulsion we can find. If fuel was not a limitation (like in the Elite Universe) you could just thrust up from anywhere at a few meters per second and just keep going. In Elite there is no need to achieve orbital velocity to maintain your position above a planet and there is no need to achieve escape velocity to leave a planet (as long as you have fuel). It is possible to run out of fuel in Elite but our power comes from a fusion reactor so our fuel does not weigh much and it lasts a very long time.

Personally i'm not sure it would be like that - I think there will still be some skill required- but likely no more difficult than docking in a space station, if players can't handle that - I'm not sure they should be playing a space sim.

Also it's possible that you could buy a planetary landing computer as well, that would solve that problem.

I hope there will be skill in atmospheric entry too. Personally I'd like it if your shields protected you from heat damage and if you go in too fast then your shields will run out and you get damaged. If you go in nice and slow your shields will recharge as quickly as they drain and you can sustain it.

You know, I have a feeling the first expansion will be the ability to walk around your ships and stations. The last core features I can think of to be added are passenger missions and npc crew/wingmen. These are both things that make sense to develop, not necessarily as a part of, but alongside being able to walk around your ship and in stations. When this expansion comes out, they are going to need to develop full animations for a person walking around and doing stuff, which crosses over for what is needed for crew and certainly helps with passengers. Similarly ships will need to be redesigned to accommodate multiple crewmembers piloting, both for npc crew, and for when someone hops out of their ship and starts assisting piloting another ship. Whatever they do, I expect these features will be tied to that expansion, and I am guessing they probably want them in the game sooner, rather than later. Especially, if those features were tied to the first expansion, then it makes sense that all these updates like 1.3 and the upcoming 1.4 have been ways to keep monthly updates up while they pass time for the first expansion to get ready.

There must be at least a dozen posts on this thread alone, pointing out that this was explicitly denied by FD. The Gamescom announcement has nothing to do with walkies.

Agreed. And don't forget the competition to name a planet.

The only question now is, what will the expansion be called? Elite: Dangerous - Planetfall? Planetside?

I am hyped as hell, but I do have concerns in how much content they can add. Even if we get planetary landings, what would there be to do on a planet? Would it just be the same as an orbital station, albeit reskinned on the ground? If so, that wouldn't solve any of the shallow-content woes that currently plague this game.
