Unfortunately, only rocky planets without atmosphere are possible.
No landings on your ELWs, no sunsets or sunrises in the strange atmosphere of the foreign world...
Sad about it.

Not to start with.
We're beginning with airless, rocky worlds...
So they will be adding the other planetary types down the road.

Yeah it would have been nice to have more details in the trailer. It was pretty bare bones by the previous trailer's standards, and more of a teaser than a full on trailer. They did say that they'll be giving more information about what we can expect over the next few days at Gamescom. I'm sure more details will also surface as the year progresses.

We already knew that it was going to start with rocky airless worlds. This still has lots of opportunities, and tbh, it's probably a good thing to start with airless moons anyway because that way we'll get to see the full spectrum of possibilities rather than just skipping rocky worlds altogether and jumping straight into the more exotic and vibrant worlds that are surely to follow.

My question is, will airless include ice moons? Because those are some of the worlds that I am the most interested in to begin with.

Soon I can land on the planet I named :)
Hopefully, maybe it was a gas giant. Can someone check what type of planet "Rattus" is?
I don't have Elite: Dangerous installed on this laptop at the moment so can't check myself.

Free Clangers expansion?

Woohoo! Great news FDev - thanks

just as an aside; will the 'Clangers' expansion be free to older players?

:D

I put it to you, that your expectations are too low, you're too used to the way other games developers have done things because they didn't know how to do it.
David Braben had seamless planetary landings in FE2 AND FFE (basically the same game) in 1993 and that fit on a 1.44MB floppy disk ... 1.44MB consider that for a moment.
Here we are in the age of modern gaming where games can be multiples of GB in size, the CQC update yesterday was 6GB, for an update!!!

And you honestly think, knowing the core die-hard Elite fans, like myself, demand nothing less than being able to manually fly our craft down to a planet's surface like we could in FE2 ... that Frontier would risk the rage in the community by making it a CUT SCENE. I think not.

Have faith, my young Padawan :p

I have faith, but all I am saying is don't let the hype train get the better of you. People expected too much from ED when it first came out and were ultimately disappointed. Whilst technically we have the hardware and technology now to do seamless, its still going to require a crazy amount of engineering to get it working correctly and more importantly fluidly on not so great hardware. Not to mention there are going to be some gameplay hurdles to overcome as well.

I trust Frontier with this (I am a shareholder after all), but the realities of game development and current technology may not mean we get exactly what we want ...

Having a vehicle with which to explore planets has been planned since the original ELITE. Seriously, Braben was talking about it since before Elite II came out --IIRC it was supposed to be included then, but for some reason wasn't. This has always been part of the plan.

Again, I know, and I was expecting it in a way. I'm not saying I don't want this. Let's clarify: I would not like to see the game played more on the surface doing gunfights than in space piloting. And I think that in the end, one of the reasons why planetary exploration was not added to previous titles was not due only to computer power at the time. But also because dispersing focus in so many different aspects would do no good for the game. Again, this is only an opinion and I'll be happy to be proven wrong. I'll buy the expansion because I want to support the project.

Still, I think that before planning something like first person movements, I'd prefer to have a mean to transport people in the galaxy and take money from this.

Michael, please clarify :

If I have beta access for the base game and buy Horizons, do I get Horizons beta access? Or do I have to pay the beta extra again?

I agree with both of you, but cant help feeling skanked myself, why cant frontier let new players pay for the next season and actually reward those who are loyal with a decent discount. I mean paying £30 for an expansion that will take over 18 months to complete is not going to happen for me.

I'm seeing rock landings (ie: things with no atmospheric induced friction and/or gravity).... not planetary landings.

No, because it's a teaser trailer.

Hmm. I remember their trailer for ED - it was a little misleading to say the least.
But the new game does sounds good but I wish they would give us a just a quick squint at what it will actually look like.

So I bought the game for £40 (plus £15 beta which I won't count) I now have to pay £30 (after 25% discount) and get access to the full game for £70
If I had never backed this game from day one I pay £40 for Horizons and get the full game?

Not sure how I should take that to be honest or am I reading that wrong?

It's not a standalone expansion - Elite Dangerous Horizons is the full game and a season of expansions.

Michael

i agree, it does sound like this is the case, i paid £50 for beta, and now if i have to buy beta horizons as well, thats a total of £90 (with £10 discount, but new players can now buy it all, with beta access for for £49. doesn't sound right some how.
But again i suppose i have had almost a year pf play extra, so maybe depends on how you look at it.

Also on another note: airless planets and the teaser, means no atmospheric transition to planets yet.

Thanks and congrats David and the ED team :D Phew! I can think about starting to play ED finally!

------------------

(please be good, please be seamless (or atleast seemingly seamless!), please be 'core' gameplay and not just a tacked on mini-game thing, please allow me to fall in love with the vista's and the worlds we can explore, please be a positive sign of things ahead, and please do not distract from the all important overall gameplay experience improvements that need to be ongoing) :)

What happened to the Twitch at 11am?? and the server down :( wanna fly my ship before work. Cannot wait for the expansion :)

Well, if the rock will be large enough, it's a planet... so planetary landing. ;)
