The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

One source said so, the thread I made about with the link to the article is now MIA. So that could mean it could have been misinformation.(the article)

I would have thought that you'd supercruise to a exit point which then loads in the instance and then fly down to the planet from there.

Quite high up you start the normal space descent I don't know.

Purely speculating here, but I would anticipate some kind of atmospheric entry phase during which it re-instances and loads in all the terrain elevation and texture data. I can't imagine how they'd do it otherwise. But that doesn't mean it can't be done without the appearance of being seamless. It'll be interesting to see. I'm very much looking forward to this! :)

Think of it like flying around in the rings, or arriving at a station. You have to exit SC at one point, and you will join the Planetary instance at the same moment.

As the thread title implies, will planetary landings be seamless?

Given the fact we have a whole bunch of instances, I’m assuming planetary landings will not be seamless and we will be given some kind of fancy re-entry screen before being plopped in at the top of the planet. I hope I’m wrong, but I can’t be giving any cash until I know for sure.

Dropping out of cruise speed to a planet or station is actually a loading screen currently. So my best guess is, dropping out to a planet may take a few seconds longer (or not) could include the time it would take to load the textures and data required for close up and landing on it.

The trailer does not show anything
there was a statement saying how you could go into "low orbit and choose your landing spot"
i reckon it'll be a separate thing, not seamless. similar to the way locations & supercruise work.
I won't be entirely disappointed either way though, I think the game mechanics are as good as can be expected right now.

what's more interesting is that it's rocks & non-atmospheric planets first. guess that's because colonised cities / earth-like planets etc. are going to take a HELL of a lot of work to ensure they all don't look the same...like station interiors do. E-D hasn't got a great reputation for variety so far...

We do not have a bunch of "instances".

The "instances" has to do with what players and moving NPCs you connect/sync too not the gameworld itself. You can drop out thousands of km away from a POI and fly in towards it with normal flight and you will still find the same things there.

It will be seamless.

All unknown - still to early. All we got to go with is what's in the description in the store page - and that's not helpful in the long run.

This is true. I was interdicted a long way away from the station, it was just a pinprick of light, I had a great time evading the the enemy until I got to the no fire zone, took me about 20 minutes.

The gameworld itself is "real".

That's not true.

During Beta prior to them implementing fuel you could fly to another system but nothing was there - you needed to "tell" the game you had left the old system by means of supercruise. (Transition)

Even now there are transitions:

- Normal to/from Supercruise actually is a transition from local space to supercruise space.
- There is a system (not sure which) that is close enough to fly on with fuel tanks. Someone on the forums tried it via SC and nothing was at the destination. They had to hyperspace (ergo: transitions)

The galaxy is not 1 smooth large space that you fly about in .. it's huge boxes you hyperspace between. (As it was in Elite)
