The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

You are right about the weather simulation, but even that should be much simpler on planets without any significant water supplies.
Why would it be simpler? I'd have thought it would be harder as they'll have to simulate something we don't have good empirical data for. Taking Titan as an example, we know that it has methane-ethane clouds and that it has definite weather including wind and rain (which would presumably behave differently to ours because of differences in chemical makeup, gravity, etc.) and this in turn leads to features like rivers, lakes, seas, dunes, etc. What we don't have a good handle on are the processes that lead to these features. Frontier will have to take what we do know (e.g. from observation of Titan) and extrapolate that into a generic model, including the modelling of tidal forces. It's going to be a lot of work.

Not true. Most planets with atmosphere don't require any flora, fauna, cities, villages, rivers or oceans.

Agreed of course.
But I was thinking about the most ambitious part of it.
It might very well be that we get access too 'lifeless' planets with atmospheres first. Would not surprise me at all.

I mean offline in terms of rendering, not internet connection. I.e. offline rendering you can spend weeks rendering a scene if so desired because you don't have to be able to interact and move through said scene in real time like in a game. Terregen is a good piece of offline terrain generation software.

Yes Mike, NMS is rendering realtime and has found a method of simulating underwater caves.

So been playing Horizons & not sure but is there a scan for planet surfaces so we can find ship wrecks or some kind of coordinates so we can find things without having to search entire planets. I like realism but seems like a bit much to have to physically search whole planet, would be cool if maybe ship could scan planet & determine possible points of interest, game currently shows bases but not signal sources. Just a thought though, but graphics & game looks really nice & love the transition from space to planet, very nice FD! :)

I share your thoughts. I have not yet found any shipwrecks, but have "mined" lots of materials with the SRV. I guess FD wants us to discover things for ourselves, or perhaps wrecks are only found as part of missions...?

Fly over the surface and look on your scanner (zoomed out) you'll see blue circles appear. Land in that circle and deploy your SRV and you will have found something. In the next build these things will also be visually visible from the air without deploying your SRV first.

FPS module, planets with atmospheres, volcanic activity, gas giants, water worlds are NOT part of Horizons.

Airless worlds, multi-crew, ship launched fighters, looting and crafting, different types of generated missions are.

Could have sworn they said there were going to introduce volcanoes/geysers later in season 2. Am I wrong?

You're not. Vulcanism, Multi-crew, character creator, ship-launched fighters and Crafting are what we know are in the Season 2 updates.

I think the things that interest me are:-
- Additional exploration graphical variation. eg: Volcanoes and geysers. But, please let's have more standard stuff too! eg: Aurora borealis, electrical storms, common envelopes for binary stars - It's been a year so give core exploration content some love!
- Ship-launched fighters in the hope that there are then interesting missions specific for it. eg: Protect a station/capital ship/convoy for 30mins from attack (using your fighter). Allow it to be a Wing mission.

I fear crafting will just change the already precarious paper, scissors, stones mechanics, to paper, scissors, stone, lizard, spock, badger...

I'm also concerned how interesting multi-crew will prove to be.

Well... I think it will suck. Can't see why anyone would want to sit and wait for action to happen just to end up in a useless fighter instead of his own ship : P

Thanks I will try that.

I'm hoping geezers will be introduced as well.

Look forward to seeing some of them myself in Horizons.

Would very much like to see POI in planets which when discovered unfolds a story line based on some item found etc., this would allow individual missions based upon discovery of certain items within a POI/wreck, as opposed to missions which are advertised before hand. This could allow individual players to discover missions which no other player is involved in the discovery, but could involve other players when later undertaking the mission.
e.g. " A black box item found after scanning a wreck which contains the data log of the wreck, evidence of which points to . . . . . . .", etc.,

Thanks Tinman, yes I have seen lots of blue areas and landed to check them out. I guess I've been unlucky with the "spawning" of these zones. Up to now I've only found a bunch of generator thingies, some "drilling into the ground plasma poles", some debris/cargo being protected by drones etc. Perhaps in time...

I would like to find one of those big "crashed ship" sites as on the early FD YouTube; I suspect they pop up less often.

Any thoughts on the "red square - 10 seconds to comply" areas? If you attack you get a fine/bounty, and if you enter you get the warning, so are you only supposed to deal with these areas in enemy territory? Cheers for your thoughts :)

I REALLY like this idea Tony H. The feeling of opening a box and unlocking a mission or a series of interconnected missions is great and entirely different from the way any of the current tasks are delivered, which are all very A to B. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy most of the missions, but they ARE very "go there, do that, come back".

The recent addition of being able to scan the terminals within the time limit and being rewarded with a "voucher" to cash in is a nice deviation from the mission acquisition we're used to, and I hope they extend this to other possibilities.

EG: Perhaps we could find some cargo on a downed ship, which is worthless but gives a clue to where to take it - perhaps a corporation with an interest in the ship/cargo. They then give you a "scanner code" or something, that allows you to find three or four of the "missing cargo/fleet" and once it is ALL returned a generous reward. But you need to find the initial ship to be given the capability to search for the remainder...

Most of those require atmospheres (aurora, electrical storms). The extended stellar envelopes are on the list but as they're visual only they're quite low on that list.

"Just visual" risks under selling their important fundamentally IMHO.

The whole exploration experience would be made far far more rewarding by adding a load more dice into system generation, giving more variety and interesting things to witness and see. In a year, the only addition to the existing exploration (visual) experience has been city lights on the dark side of planets... which once you get outside the bubble means nothing.

But meanwhile a bucket of time has been thrown at Powerplay... And another bucket at CQC...

I'm wondering if a person in your co-pilot seat/fighter can fly with your Wing without counting as being a member. It guarantees having an extra ally in your instance at all times.

It's also useful for people like me and my friend. I have an Anaconda, which can launch fighters. He's literally only just started playing, so doesn't have much money or experience.

I appreciate he will have more by the time fighters are added, but it would be a cool way for him to learn how to play. With me to support and pay for his lost fighters :p
