News ANNOUNCING ELITE DANGEROUS: HORIZONS

Saying holiday season usually implies around Christmas, and when they also mentioned "end of the year" and December, it seems rather clear. Now whether it will be on Dec 25 or Dec 31 or Jan 1st is something they themselves may not have set yet. Holiday just means some time late December, probably. I really doubt there's a secret date that's more specific than that at the moment.

The pre-orders are only through our store, the steam release will be the released product. However if you already have the game and then buy Elite Dangerous: Horizons you will have access to the Cobra MkIV.

Michael

Thank you.

Do you mean initially, or does that mean that planetary landing won't be expanded to planets with atmospheres, and then life and civilization, within the scope of the season?

Exactly. It's almost as if that statement yet again could have been "stated more clearly", right? :D

I swear... they make an effort to be as ambiguous and non-committal as possible. ;)

EDIT:

Not within the season - planets with life and atmospheres are further down the line.

Michael

Okay, thank you. Now I know that I don't have to invest in Horizons (yet). That's all I wanted to know, really. I'll wait and see what's going to happen (or not going to happen) down the line. :)

I am happy like a child.

I am wondering about the Cobra Mark IV.
It is for those who joined in the first year?
Could I get a more specific date?
I did preorder ED and the lifetime expansion pass, but I have no idea whether I did in the first year.

If I do not get the Mark IV I will be so disappointed.

WELL FREAKING DONE FRONTIER!!!

Ok now that I'm awake enough to post... ( woke up at 4 to read the announcement ) you guys managed to roll a homerun, slam dunk and touchdown all in one. Seriously this will shoot all the lights out and I had very high expectations of the planetary landing expansion. But that's not all! the introduction of a rover was really an unexpected bonus! let's just say of Mass Effect one of my favorite parts (if not the favorite part) was driving the rover and disregarding every single safety measure. Can't wait to do that in ED. Also forget CQC this opens up a new possibility!!!! Galactic Racing Leagues. Think about it you got planetary rallys or even space station tracks for rover racers!!! It totally needs to happen!

Again THANKS! and WELL DONE!

I'm going to guess that if you played Elite Dangerous any time in 2014 you should be good.

Thanks, Michael. From the GamesRadar article, there would appear to be a "loot & crafting" update in early 2016 - is this included within the scope of this season?

Also, there has been mention of a Ships update - where does that fit in the release timeline, please?

So I will have to repeat my question from earlier: landing on Pluto, yes or no? For it has an atmosphere some of the time... ;)

(Also, when will we see those updated Pluto and Charon surfaces? :D)

Maybe - but Mars has an atmosphere so isn't landable in Elite Dangerous: Horizons.

Michael

I really hope you meant to say 'the initial release of Elite Dangerous: Horizons' because all those people who have to pay for expansions are going to very upset if they have to shell out more cash to land on planets with atmospheres and then more again to land on ones with plants etc....

On this point, Star Citizen and Chris Robets are clearly leading the race !

Also leading the race on....
"That awesome multi-crewed combat ship you pledged lots of money for.... its now a slow moving star fish that lives in a fish tank, which you'll need to buy, because we spent 3 months hand crafting the digital screws used to hold the virtual wood base frame together for the tank.
We know you'll love the immersion of these individually crafted screws, so we are giving away a free "I got my pledge ship nerfed to oblivion" trophy for your non-existent trophy cabinet.
BTW we just decided to change your pledge star fish again, for no reason"

Well, according to the description in the FD shop it is:

A Season of Content
The second major update for Elite Dangerous: Horizons will release in Q1 2016 with more expansions to follow.
This second major update will include additional gameplay-focused content including an all-new game-changing loot and crafting system.

So, no planets with atmospheres within next year :((( ... that's quite concerning and underwhelming, even though i kinda understand it (you'll probably need the First Person expansion to make them fully enjoyable, or even justify the expansion itself).

Whatever... i've just bought the lifetime pass anyway... just make it good :p

PS: This still made me worry about your future plans... i wouldn't like this to end up something like the powerplay feature, nice premise with little soul. Let's se...

I'm not upset. It just confirmed what I suspected and I made my decision not to purchase Horizons for now. If planets with atmospheres and life had been part of the deal and woud have been added to Horizons later on it would have been fine. Now that I know that we'll have to pay extra for those as well, I'll give it a pass. No Man's Sky... here I come.

I want to be totally geeky and try and guess which plane it is in the second picture - is it a Typhoon (or Eurofighter as they used to be called)?

That was my guess as well - intake looked familiar

You're right .. it is quite geeky .. BUT you both "win £5" TM

... Eurofighter Typhoon Airfix 04036

(not even remotely similar to the picture on the box in this case!)

One thing that isn't clear to me from this thread is whether or not people (like me) who bought the Steam version will have to do anything differently in order to pre-order the expansion. Would appreciate clarification.

As a Fuel Rat, I'm also wondering whether and how refueling limpets are going to work in a gravity well, and whether SRVs will require (or be capable of) refueling? I foresee a lot of CMDRs getting stranded in a gravity well with insufficient fuel to escape, and this could be an amazing expansion of Fuel Rat gameplay... or it could create a "no man's land" where we basically have to tell people "sorry, but if you're on a planet's surface we can't save you". The former would be marvelous, the latter... would be pretty awful.
