Interesting, the article you linked to talks about:
Players will be able to scan worlds for signs of life (hostile or otherwise), detect precious minerals or enemy fortresses.

This would suggest that aliens will be introduced with the upgrade. Not sure if these would be intelligent aliens or basically just your mindless big-toothed predator, but this does suggest that 'the T is out there'. (Decide for yourself if T stands for Truth or Thargoid ;)

Well I know I'm talking about myself and 99% of the rest of you guys when I say "who are we kidding we are going to buy it anyway" :D Lets be thankful it's not £50-£60.....I would moan more but still pay up......DAMN IT!

Aye, is why I went for the £120 one. It's gonna get bought so....

I also have the feeling Frontier are going to break down these expansions into as many... separate... paid... ones... as... they... can... possibly... get... away... with...

Yes Kickstarter was a bargain but there was more risk then so it was a gamble. We all know Elite stuff seems to generally be "overpriced" but that's just how it is unfortunately. I bit the bullet... £120. Imagine mysteries locked behind paywalls, this could be fun. =/

Well, if there is one paid expansion a year (with a reasonable amount of content) that is only 12 quid a year, or 1 pound a month. Think of it as a monthly subscription for that amount for the next ten years, makes it a bit more palatable perhaps. And in terms of entertainment value per month, if they deliver over the next ten years, certainly a miniscule amount. It is the paying it all upfront part without knowing what we will be getting part that I don't like. I suppose we can use our imaginations... ;-)

If they come out and say it will eventually include atmospheric planetary landings, and better missions, it _might_ be worth it. I am certainly going to bide my time and wait I think and see how it goes down. If it is like planetary exploration in Mass Effect 1 or 2, for example, well, I don't think that is worth that sort of coin, particularly if there is nothing but more procedurally-generated missions to support it.

Definitely doesn't include atmospheric landings:
Do you mean initially, or does that mean that planetary landing won't be expanded to planets with atmospheres, and then life and civilization, within the scope of the season?

Not within the season - planets with life and atmospheres are further down the line.

Huh. So they will want another 30 quid for that then.

Edit: That lifetime pass is starting to look more and more like a potential bargain. Assume FPS will be two paid expansions (first on ships, then on the ground) at least, plus atmospheric landings, that's 90 quid already. Thargoids, another 30 quid, possible in two paid expansions (Oresrian and Klaxian flavours), plus potentially another major alien race, that makes 180 quid.

The alternative is to pay 40 quid for beta access to each expansion (assuming later ones are the same price). That's just over 3 expansions. They've talked a lot about FPS mode and now atmospheric landings are separate so that's possibly the two after Horizons. I think I'll probably stick with buying them separately. 40 quid a year seems smarter than 130 quid right now.

Gonna be a module innit.

It's essentially an explorer thing.

From a friend at the event, there is mention of fighters as well for planetary exploration and attacking bases in one of the pieces, in addition to the SRV and a four-wheeled vehicle as well, all as part of this "Season" - whether that means it is all included in Horizons, or another paid expansion, is anyone's guess.

Yup, particularly if things don't last ten years...

Good point about FPS being two expansions, that's possible. Though I'd expect not since the environments are already done; there shouldn't be much work involved in letting us walk on a planet once we can already walk on a ship. OTOH the stations might be quite a lot of work.

Can they do Thargoids as a paid expansion? Maybe Thargoid worlds, but surely they can't make it so that you only get interdicted by Thargoids if you've paid for the privilege?

Oh my life....I thought you were joking....Do you think they will let me Star as myself when they make the film version

I am always deadly serious about where credit is due. I am sure they will, particularly if Erimus produces the film. ;-)

Don't see why not, would just be a check in the code to see what expansions you have installed. Forgot about stations, that makes possible three FPS paid expansions (on ships, on stations, on the surface). Then if they break surface up into airless worlds and then atmospheres for FPS, that's four paid expansions. Plus alien paid expansions.

Horribly off topic:

You guuuys they're adding 10+ more ships before Christmassss

(Click bait)

I know every ones talking about PL right now but I'm way more stoked for thisss

So 1.5 is a ships update. If they stick with the plan to include the Beluga and the Dolphin then maybe it'll include passenger missions as well. "For all players" means the Cobra Mk IV is not included in that count either.

From my friend there, re planetary landings demo:

Seems a bit pvp on wheels. Hoping there is some exploring aspect to it too.

Wasn't totally clear if planet landings how far out they extend. Eg exploring in deep space.

Initially it's airless planets. You can explore in either an explorer type vehicle or a 4 wheeler fighter [?].

Exploring you'll be able to explore crashed ships and abandoned stations. Also mentioned exploring meteor craters and mines.

With the fighter you can wing up and take down a base's defences.

Power play. They are aware that a lot of players are vocal about disliking it. They are committed to it and seems that PP is in for the long haul

No plans for player owned stations/asteroids etc. not on roadmap but never say never. [i.e. shurely it will come right after the looting and crafting expansion, eds.]

No plans to change open/solo modes. Feeling is it works well, most players are happy and any changes would [upset?] a large majority of players.

He is hoping to go to another demo and the launch party tonight and quiz them some more, so I will report back if I hear anything else.

That's exactly it. I'm not advocating buying lifetime is the best option.

It's just I'm pretty sure I'll end up buying every expansion and from what I've seen so far I'm also pretty sure Braben is going to try to nickel and dime me all the way for every thikg he can get away with!

He's gonna win whatever I do, but sod him, here's the £120 let's draw a line under it and be done with it!

Plus the beta which Sigon was observant enough to notice, means my Anaconda will cost me 13,661,649 to replace instead of 27,323,297! Pay to win etc... =p

Agreed. I already have beta access, so that is not a biggie for me, and my experiences as a beta tester and what I have seen on the beta forums vs what actually gets released have not filled me with confidence in how FD work. Good point though. Is it really that low? I thought it was 97% or something?

Attacking bases sounds a lot like the old bombing run missions from FE2/FFE. That's good.

Easy to check, but what if a Thargoid indicts a "Thargoids" player and then a "non-Thargoids" wingmate jumps in? They get to watch a battle between their wingmate and an invisible enemy? Or do they get banned from entering instances that contain Thargoids? Either way would be terrible, IMO.

Hope they don't go for that many FPS expansions. If they stick to one per year that'd be 3 years of pretty incremental expansions after the first FPS one. I think if it's multiple expansions it's more likely to be "FPS on ships and planets" and then "FPS on stations".

Good point. If it is limited only to interdictions (i.e. no missions or the like) I suppose they could simply allow anyone in a Wing where at least one person has the expansion to be able to interact with the content, but that would cut into their sales.

Or aliens. Always good to have extra aliens. Also, maybe there will be a separate expansion on the Alliance, given that there is almost nothing for them in-game at the moment? Possibly would arrive with or just before Thargoids if they follow the lore and keep the two connected?
