General / Off-Topic When micro-transactions goes bad: An EA tale..of greed!

About time someone brought up the topic of micro transactions,
The problem we have here is that 90% of us backer grew up during the golden age of gaming.
We have also seen the decline of true gaming, almost gone are the days when you bought a game and everything that you needed or liked was in the game already.
This all changed with the arrival of the XBOX 360 in 2005, in my eyes it was Microsoft who changed the gaming industry and those idiots who bought map packs, weapon unlocks, avatars and wallpapers. Though the Micro transactions concept was tested as early as 1998 it wasn’t until Microsoft 360 that they found a market for it.
We all know that before micro transaction you would have the opportunity to buy expansion packs, pretty much a full game using the same engine. But since 2005 that all changed and its steadily got worse. Now its spending another £35 on a season pass, even elite dangerous is using this by adding £45 for all future expansion packs.
The only developers that have given value for added content are Rockstar games and Bethesda at a push. Nobody wants Elite to have micro transaction, but its going to happen, and I really hope that these micro transactions don’t cheapen the game, and one thing i really hope FD don’t do is to sell ships to us, i really don’t want Elite to turn into another Star Citizen with FD selling space ships for £40+ .

It's funny you should say that. My first memory of gaming was micro transactions... But of course back then it was called coin op. ;)

Even as a kid I hated being forced to only be able to enjoy a game for as long as I had cash. I jumped at the chance to actually OWN pacman or galaxia or wwf and eventually mortal kombat!

Now with the internet, gaming companies have found a way to go back to the bad old days of leasing games to consumers instead of you owning it.

We've come full circle

Yikes! No wonder they like their mobile games, that is daylight robbery!

But, here is a much much much better alternative in World of the Underworld currently in Alpha (despite saying beta it really is still more like an Alpha):

Still, being an alpha if you don't like unfinished games I would wait. No Micro-transactions and imho it is shaping up to be better than DK1/2.

A picture is worth a thousand words...

I have a great idea for Elite Dangerous. You can only do a hyperspace jump once an hour. Wouldn't that make the game more fun? Then FD could sell hyperspace jumps to make money! Perfect!

Any parent who links their own account for their kids to spend money on crap like this should have their head examined. I opened a checking account for my son that's only used for his allowance ($15/week). If he blows it all on stupid stuff like this, which wouldn't take long, then he's out of luck and broke till he gets more allowance. He fell for it a couple times and learned his lesson, which is how it's supposed to happen. I suppose some parents link their own accounts or are otherwise giving their kids WAY too much money.

No doubt that's happening unfortunately with some parents, but I wouldn't be surprised if there are plenty of adults who should, but perhaps may not due to not being introduced to gaming during those bygone pre-Wii days, know better than to spend money on that.

I thought Cryptic was bad, this is worse.

You make a good point. I suppose if they aren't aware it's even out there then the next thing is for them to hopefully notice the charges on their statements and start raising hell. Probably some never notice which is why it's so profitable - and unethical.

Actually, xbox360 might have lit the torch, but mobile gaming and Facebook were the ones who learned how to rip you off. They realised that more money could be made out of the hapless casual gamer than the usual hardcore informed ones and behold, a new greed was born.

The problem is the industry is tainted. You either cash in or go under... Or at Least make a whole lot less than you perceive you could.

But know your market. A lot of Elite players come from that age of zero microtransactions, so FD need to retread reaaaal careful on this.

We can be sure we wont get crap like pay to hyperspace, that's reserved for F2P and/or mobile games, BUT, frontier did design Coaster Crazy and that does a similar thing all be it again, it was for the mobile casual gamer market.

It has gone very quiet since that DDF topic was started, so will be interesting to see what comes out of it.

.

oh, come on.... i am not a 'hapless casual gamer' nor a 'hardcore informed gamer' and i doubt either species exists. fact is games are entertainment and people pay for it.

I came here to say that!

Anyone remember shovelling 10p's into Gauntlet? That was the ultimate micro-transaction model... the robbing barstewards!

So yeah, you can't even commend them for inventing a new business model. They just dug up the corpse of a really old one and brushed the cobwebs off.

ok this just hit me tell me what you think.

Elite Dangerous totally free to play. no purchase necessary.
options are.
1: buy the game and expansion for RRP, no in game micro transactions.

Or

2: download the game for free. get 100 credits and a starter ship. with 3 free ship changes.
Ammo can be bought through in game currency but if you are getting through your ammo a little to quickly you can purchase x amount of missiles and bullets for £x.99.

want a new ship then that's another £3,99.
want that fancy cosmetic then that another.99p

this would cater for the casual gamer and keep the hardcore happy.

Pay to win wouldn't work.

gauntlet? i remember putting coins into pong. pub i went to (west london) had a machine in... on a wednesday. by friday it had an 'out of order' sign on it. landlord said he was going to get rid of it because it didnt work.... engineer came in and opened it up and there were coins flowing out like lava. stopped working because the coin hopper had overflowed.

Well I would say they most certainly do.
As someone on a games forum who has pledged etc... You pretty much are an informed gamer, hardcore or otherwise.

In comparison to those who like a bit of candy crush now and again on their phone and throw real life money to keep playing whatever other game their friends tell them too and are stuck on after 5mins.

I'm not saying people don't do both, but by and large i believe those who grew up with buy game, get full content, are rather pickier with what they throw their money at.

This is all about profit. If EA is making a profit by utilizing these tactics, you can bet other companies and even Frontier will take a look. As passionate fans and gamers, we sometimes forget that everything here and everything about Elite and our very own presence, ultimately is leading towards one true goal: Profit for FDEV.

We can only hope for a balanced perspective between profit and art.
