Lets Play a Game - Planetary Surface Features: What would you like to see?

Call me crazy, but i want to see huge beam lasers from an anaconda in low orbit carving up the landscape around me as he attempts in vain to hit me as I speed around in my SRV. Hopefully leaving huge burn/char/damage marks on the surface (at least for the duration of my time in the instance).

I'd like to put up giant drive in theater type screen upon the a moon or planet that we could put a 250 X 250 gif or pic so some traveler happens upon the billboard.

I would like to see strange things, but not so strange that they break immersion.

I do not want every rocky planet looking like the moon or mars, some more variety.

Think I'll skip this post like the many others like it. Already many ideas no need for another post on the same subject.

Hey guys. I'll be updating the first post after Friday with the suggestions that obeys the laws of physics and fits within the elite universe. Thanks for the input.

Planetary Surface Features: What would you like to see?

Here’s something that will be fun. When I was out exploring, I often looked at the planetary info the game provides and wondered... what would be on the planets if planetary landings was ever implemented. It was a game I played by myself to fight off space madness, and when I got back I sort of missed it. I'd been planning on posting it for a while. Now with planetary landings announced, what better time to start? In the process brainstorm features we would like to see on the surface. Who knows! We may even give the developers an idea or two.

So, here is how it works:

Are you out exploring right now? See a planet that is interesting? Post its info from the system map view with pictures, and come up with a little story. It can be from the area of the planet, or an RP story, as long as it revolves around some feature or interaction on the surface that you would like to see. Awesome planet pictures preferred.

OR

It can be as simple as a suggestion of something you want to see. Remember... to make a procedurally generated environment that isn’t unbearably repetitive, variety and believability is important (at least in my opinion).

I'll be honest with you. I bought the game for exploring. And planetary landings will really help fill that area, which desperately needs content.

I started a running list of structures here. I will develop this list as we go. Of course I don’t expect it to go into this much detail (this is not a speculation thread), but its fun to explore possibilities.

  • Geological
    • geothermal activity?
      • Volcanoes (Onshore and off)
      • Geysers
      • Earthquakes
      • Mountains
      • Plates/Pangea
      • Protective magnetosphere
        • Maintains atmosphere
    • Weathering (Dependant on Weather and Atmospheric Conditions)
      • Type
        • Liquid
        • Gas
        • Solid/Sand/Ice
        • Combo
    • Natural Structure Types (Existance dependant on Weather and Weathering)
      • Canyons
      • Cliffs
      • Glaciated Valleys (Often seen together, created by the same processes, dependant on past climate)
        • Aretes
        • Cirques
        • Fjords
        • Glacial trough
        • Glaciers (Dependant on current climate)
        • Hanging Valley (often creates small waterfalls)
        • Ribbon lakes
      • Rivers
        • Drainage Basins
        • Deltas
        • Distributaries
        • Estuaries
        • Gorge
        • Meander or straight (dependent on elevation change)
        • Ox Bows
        • Point Bar
        • Rapids (Dependant on rocks resistance to erosion and depth)
        • River cliffs (Outer meander)
        • Waterfalls (and subsequent plunge pools)
      • Caves
      • Coastal and Offshore
        • Archs
        • Bars
        • Bays
        • Coastal Caves (Imagine if tides are included)
        • Cliffs (Coloring dependant on rock type)
        • Carbonate platforms(life must have been present on the planet in the past to create the carbonate rock which forms these!)
          • Lagoons
          • Reefs
          • Mud Mounds
          • Atoll
          • Islands
      • Craters
        • More atmosphere means less and requires larger mass to create one
        • Does it change the coloring of the planet in that area with different ejecta
  • Atmospheric
    • Sky color
    • Weather
    • Pressure related
  • Non-naturally occurring structures
    • Sentient (advanced species) made objects
    • Non-Sentient
  • Life
    • Big Game Hunting

I went to town on the geology part to kick it off. Its one of my areas of interest and close to my career. Now show me what you got! There is a galaxies worth to add.

Yeah all of that please but we'll probably have to make do with mountains and valleys!

I encourage you guys to come up with a planet example of something you found while exploring, as per the game mentioned in the original post. I'm working on an interesting one right now. Should be ready by this weekend.

I already did: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=174343&page=2&p=2683129&viewfull=1#post2683129

That planet captured my attention in a short exploration travel, the very close proximity to the blue star, the ring, the magma, the color... pretty awesome.

Nice suggestions,

I personatly would love to see some kind of mini game.

Let players create tiny outposts, for example a research outpost.

- find a spot for the first hub
- gather resources to upgrade the hub
- extend mini base with certain moduls (refinery, solar & wind generators, research lab, etc)

The ideas are endless. But I would love to see something like this happen.

(Elite survival)

Edit: (Sigh) sorry. That's not fair. I can't delete this post entirely or I would.

I'm jaded and prejudiced because of all the rottenness that the various complain threads have churned out and that's not fair to you.

+Rep For admitting you're having a bad day ;)

On Topic Bit:

On many of the worlds with an atmosphere, and some without, I expect to find some kind of remains from the alien races that inhabited large areas of space in the original game before the Thargoids kicked off. This was only a few hundred years ago in game time and so there should still be large amounts of ruins to search through.

Now of course this is a big problem for FD. They either have to come up with a fictional reason why there are no ruins or they will need to do a lot of work to create a huge number of different building styles to represent the various cultures.

Should be interesting to see which route they take although I fear they will take the easy way out with some kind of whitewash.

I want to see color variety. In the live streams everything was just brown. But in reality rocks, certain formations etc. look different and that looks much less monotonous.

Oh, and sometimes I also want to see this:
640
;)

I'd like to see Cryo-Volcanism and strange shapes and structures when their expelled materials refreeze and settle. Anyone read Lem's Fiasko? There is some cryo geysers described in there and they produce tree like structures. They also move because jology and so it's called Birnam Wood.

I also want to see a ring in unstable orbit with parts of it crashing on the planet. On atmospheric ones this might be quite a view.
