General / Off-Topic World refugee crisis

Anyone have any thoughts, observations, insights on the increasing problems of people being smuggled into Europe, N America and Australia?

It is a sad state it is in, however at the same time, it is an enormous pressure that is put on countries to take in and support that many people, not sure what the solution is :(

The Germany is happy to welcome 800000 new migrants. Because Germany has an aging demographic. But I wonder if this is the right solution

Indeed.

I also wonder about those who are doing the trafficking. They clearly don't have much regard for their passenger's safety. Yet after over 80 people suffocated in truck designed as a refrigeration transport, the protests were claiming that Europe has Blood on its hands.

I believe similar claims are being made against Australia.

After a recent rescue, where two children were found in the back of a truck, close to death due to dehydration, then taken to hospital. After a couple of days, the children vanished. Similar situations seem to be happening here in the UK with young children.

It all just seems very sinister.

Nationalism is an evil humanity would do well to discard. Unfortunately, it's going to significantly hamper our collective response to global climate change, and a lot of people will die in the name of flags and borders.

If you think about it, though, there's no moral privilege attached to the mere fact that one person was born in one place, versus another; birth is an accident. The idea that someone can say "look, you, just because I was born within these imaginary lines on a map, I can say that you have to stay out of them. And starve." That's going to work about as well as can be expected.

I hope that our leaders are not as morons, that they seem. And they are conscious that among the millions of refugees who invade the Europe, Al Qaeda and Daesh have infiltrated hundreds of "crazy of god"

Westerners throw in the trash approximately 1/3 of the food that they produce. And you ? ---- Millions of millions of tons of food which are in the trash. Useless to displace of millions of people. Move rather the food

Two problems with that: Different cultures mandate that people work in their own "ecosystems". Some goals don't fit together. For example, some societies attempt to maximize the population with their given resources while others attempt to maximize the individual quality of life with their given resources. How would a unified humanity handle that?

In addition, nations compete against each other in providing for their citizens, which provides a mechanism for securing progress. In various reports, we see that the quality of live is usually best in smaller countries (usually in terms of population). Because of administrative overhead and needed compromises, larger countries have a hard time competing - how would that be solved with a universal world goverment?

A unified humanity is part of many a dream in SciFi, yet I believe it will be a difficult one.

Of course. The reality puts idealism in its place. Even if idealism is something noble

Pretty much everyone in the world says that though, try going to Saudi Arabia and claiming a share of their oil wealth on the basis that the lines drawn around it are imaginary :)

When it comes down to it, control over territory derives not from moral justification but from force and from the ability of a group of current occupants to act collectively, a sense of nationhood is helpful in enabling this. Whether it's good or bad seems immaterial, it just turns out to be an effective way for territorially-based groups (in their own self-interest) to behave.

The European Union has called emergency talks on tackling the bloc's escalating migration crisis.

.............................................

Discussion points will include internal co-operation, fighting the trafficking of migrants, and return policy.

Germany, France and the UK have said the EU should establish a list of "safe countries of origin" that would allow immediate repatriation of some migrants.

On Saturday Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said much more was required to prevent the deaths of people fleeing to Europe and called for a "collective political response".

It's a delicate situation, you have women and children starving and running away from war and mixed with them you have potential terrorists that will infiltrate our society and in 5/10 years be used to deal a huge blow to Europe economy/security.

I agree. It is a very big danger, and certainly before 5-10 years
