Because they are hateful and we hate them. Why so much hate on guilds?
Unless you actually look like your avatar in which case I agree with everything you say.

I will make one point, games like ED will depend on its community for its success and guild formation is a major plus point towards building a robust and passionate playerbase/community.
Or maybe having no formal support for such things becomes a Unique Selling Point making for a robust and passionate player base? Adding guilds makes it just another MMORG...
Well I'm just grumpy to see the good ideas fall behind in public perception than the same old ideas.
U missed the point...
Guilds can only ever be a plus point towards social interaction because guilds encourage player interaction by design... having no guilds is a minus point for the simple reason it doesnt encourage player interaction.
I cannot see how having no guilds within a game encourages social interaction...
Games must have mechanics within the game to encourage social interaction. I cant think of any game which has no guild support which has become socially successful... can anyone else think of any?
The other reason guilds/clans are included in games is that parts of the game require some form of teaming up with other players in order to participate. Im guessing that ED will have some events where teaming up with other players is beneficial... although there is a chance they wont and theyll make the entire game a solo experience.

As GM of possibly the first guild to officially gather people under its flag in Elite Dangerous, I can't disagree with the sentiment behind this statement more.
Elite: Dangerous is offering something different from gameplay, and if it ever does guilds, I hope it does so equally differently. At the moment, it's a sandbox, so it's up to the GMs and guild-minded players to come up with stuff in that sandbox. To be handed another set of generic cookie cutter guild options, when the gameplay doesn't support, it leaves me entirely cold.
I havent been on these forums for a few months so have i missed any game mechanics which will cater for guilds? Has there been any game announcements about this subject?
There was a huge unhealthy and bad tempered set of threads that caused some unpleasantness and disquiet in Middle England. The Daily mail readers and Grauniad readers all went to war and the upshot was that it is a Taboo subject in the realm....
Don't go there it will end in tears....
Ive already had enough run-ins with the 'old-fashioned' attitude that Elite fans just want a prettier looking Elite and they all wanna play the game by themselves... the same crowd all seem terrified of a bit of pvp too...
It looks like the same crowd are equally as terrified of modern gaming in as much as theyre scared of guilds too *sigh*
