Elite Dangerous data : is the game dying or growing ?

I actually modified my ED desktop icon to link straight to the launcher executable in it's folder and bypass steam, because when I'd shut down the launcher steam would sometimes still think it's running and not let me re-run it (claiming it's running when it's not, confirmed by the process manager) until I'd manually restart steam. Then I figured out I can still run it bypassing steam entirely. OFC now as far as steam is concerned I'm no longer logging in hours in ED, therefore I must have stopped playing, making me a part of the black statistic :)

Yes if you wish.

You can either add it as a non-steam game or you can get steam keys from the Frontier Store. Please note that doing the latter means any digital purchases from FD in the future will be linked to steam, and Valve will take a proportion of what you pay.

Could you clarify this? I got the game through Steam initially and the LEP through the FD site. My Elite account has been updated, and I have access to the betas through the launcher and such, but I don't see how that is connected to Steam, other than the launcher running through it.

Maybe my account is tagged on FD's servers to give Valve a cut?

Sure - in which case you need do nothing. The game is 'locked' to steam already, all steam does is fire up the launcher. If you had bought the game direct from FD and later added it to steam you could do it 'natively' via steam keys, or 'fudged' as a non-steam game.

Game sales data :
22 April 2015 - 500.000 units sold (only PC)
31 August 2015 - 825,000 units sold (PC,Mac,Xbox)

Total unit sold grow by 65 %.

Steam stats:

Month Avg. Players
April 2015 4,471.1
August 2015 3,917.6
Avg. players number down by 12.4 %.

http://steamcharts.com/app/359320

We all know that 70-80 % of game slaes is in the first year since realase. So as current player base deacy we will see no new players around to replace them. If FD dont wake up and still will be crafting this grinding machine that Elite Dangerous is, open play will be pointless as option in menu ;).

Edit : I dont expect that ED will ever reach 2 millions unit sold when metacritic users score is 6.5/10 now and going down. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/elite-dangerous/user-reviews?sort-by=date&num_items=100

1) screw meta critic - The scourge of the games world
2) ED is a niche title, it is always going to appeal to a more limited audience than say, I dunno, War Thunder..... history shows this, Frontier was never as popular as wing commander for instance....
3) not sure if i mentioned it but Screw metacritic ;)

the problem with metacritic is ( in some waysalmost like the problem with a Democratic society but I digress).

for something to appeal to the masses it has generally to follow a set formula and essentially dilute most features which make it stand out from the crowd to make it easier to understand and if it does not do that, then whilst an amount of people will love it, a large amount of people will equally HATE it... and as we know those who dislike something make more noise than those who like it. (and metacritic shows this nicely... whilst the mean AVERAGE may be 6.5 you can see the game is like marmite...... and there are a lot of 1/10s dragging it down to silly levels (even those who do not like it would find it hard to claim to be anything like objectively calling it a 1/10)

And that is forgetting the "protest" votes of those who was angry about offline going, as well as a number of Star Citizen backers seemingly feeling to show loyalty to 1 game they have to pee all over any others in the genre.

There is nothing wrong with a niche title, and imo this is what the Elite games have always been.

Good thing steam isn't the full picture of the users. And even if it were, the game always sees a fluctuation where it rises around updates, then falls once people have done the content. Even if everyone else quits the game, as long as FDEVs servers are still up, I'll still be playing.

This post really made me think. All ED-Players I know in person bought their game on Frontier´s homepage and never used Steam. I´d really be interested in how many people are actually playing the game. Too bad I can´t any information on the offical site.

Steamspy.com shows peak concurrent players at ~4000-5000 each day, and above 1500 for every hour plotted. That might not sound much if you're used to peak AAA numbers, but is pretty healthy. It also gives a median play time of over 20 hours per player.

It is normal, everyone is now playing Star Citizen.

... oh wait.
If you look on there forums they also have naysayers calling it the end of the game etc...

to be honest my prediction is simple ; when SC comes out it will be loved for a week or two and then everyone will either continue with elite or SC because they are both space sims and by nature all space sims get called ''grinders''
they will both have there pros and cons.

based on current info I will stay on elite due to its scale and plans , because the tiny hubtowns and cheesy ambiance of SC is not my cup of tea , however I will buy it and give it ago even if it looks like freelancer 2.0 and I did not like freelancer as it was too simple , linear and dull X² was better.... elite kicks X and Freelancer out the water (I used to be an X fanboy and even cried when I saw the rebirth reviews , but I well... helped with rebirth so...yeah)

ED is a great game and will be around for quite a while yet. :D

(But then I would say that)

((But it will be around for a long time to come))

And as mentioned before: Loads of the more expierienced players are not using steam but Fontier directly.

:Dthose that moan about this very good game, with loads of scope to grow. should in my opinion move back to board games if you want a bored game. sell your GC's, PC's, MAC's. they offer too much fun for the likes of boring complaining CMDR's.
I personally get a ED fix everyday.

Total units sold has increased a lot, but many players have also stopped playing after a few months, <snip>

Most AAA games have a playing time of 60 hours or so, then players stop playing them because they have finished the game.

So, SOME players stop playing after MONTHS ....... and this is a sign of the (oft predicted) demise of E: D ?

Pushing through the market square,
so many mothers sighing.
News had just come over,
we had five years left to cry in.
News guy wept and told us,
Elite was really dying.
Cried so much his face was wet,
then I knew he was not lying.

Just don't freak out in a moonage daydream
