Hello,
The metacritic score and steam rating is what kept me from buying the game when it first came out. I didn't even pledge for Kickstarter as I had already pledged to SC and I had read some not so nice reviews. I finally caved in, cause RSI was really starting to me off, and now I'm pretty addicted to ED.
ED is not a game for everyone, and FD should not make it so (here's looking at you, CQC.) FD should concentrate on their niche market and make an awesome game for them. Then good reviews would spread by "word of mouth" and the game would surely and steadily grow. Have a core bunch of players. Take EvE Online and CCP, and look at what they've done.
It's one of the reasons I find the Horizons announcement disappointing. 2 main new feature (planetary landing, crafting), and the rest like Multi-Crew, chained missions, updates to PP are just enhancement to the core mechanics. Enhancements which have been asked for since the game went live (or even before), I believe.
https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/shipyard , read the description for the Asp. It is being marketed as a multi-crew ship in Season 1, yet the only time it gets to be a multi-crew ship is when you purchase season 2. I don't really think Horizons will help FD compete with RSI who have all these features out of the box, for half the price. In fact RSI could probably use Horizons as an example to promote SC.
ED biggest advantage right now, is that it's already a fully playable game, with a vast game universe, customizable ships (module swapping), a somewhat realistic representation of the Milkyway (as far as is known to science), and a bunch of passionate players (just look at the Commanders who have created Mobius, Lave Radio, Hutton Orbital, INARA, EDDN, Coriolis, ED Shipyard, ED Connector, etc.) Leverage on these strengths, use it as a foundation and build a great game.
Have fun, fly safe.
P.S.: I'm right now going to go use one of Elite Dangerous' biggest strengths and explore the galaxy, starting from Sol. To the Core!!!
