Elite Dangerous data : is the game dying or growing ?

if you call losing some of the chaff that want the game to change to eve online or the expectant gold miners that want player to player credits transfers then we can happily do without them you can shove all the solo players out aswell or at least lock them in solo so they cant infect the open game
I disagree with the general principle of locking players into Open/Group/Solo - solo/group players do not "infect open" they play in Open/Groups/Solo as and when they feel it is appropriate for the gameplay they want. The only people infecting Open are the griefers/gankers, that is why there are repetitive calls for PvE/PvP flags and/or an Open PvE mode (they may not be a big portion of the PvP community but the side effects certainly seem to be felt in these forums).

No what they do in solo is grind in saftey without learning how to play with the threat of other players then they come into open get there ass kicked and shout griefers the modes should be completely seperate its whats causing alot of the cheat hacker combat log crap that does infect the game

Stop turning this thread into another lame solo/group versus open thread it's bad enough as it is without adding another lame argument into the mix and derailing it.

Without stepping outside the rules of this forum I can not respond as I feel is appropriate but suffice to say it is attitudes like this that are the real problem.
---
Claiming there is not at least a degree of a problem with griefers/gankers is the typical ostrich manoeuvre I have come to expect from certain sections of this community.Any Open game with a PvP element in the Open environment suffers from it... the problem is not just unique to Open games though.
---
Cheating/Hacking is a separate issue entirely, and an unrelated problem.
---
Combat Logging could be for many reasons some semi-justified, others not, but if the griefer/ganker problem was dealt with effectively either in-game or by FD there would probably less (if not none) of the semi-justified kind.

I will echo this request. Discussions about playing modes has it's own thread. Please keep discussions separate.

Well after yesterday's EGX reveals I think it's safe to say the game is in rude health and will continue growing!

(and fwiw I don't think it was in trouble before either).

Hello,

The metacritic score and steam rating is what kept me from buying the game when it first came out. I didn't even pledge for Kickstarter as I had already pledged to SC and I had read some not so nice reviews. I finally caved in, cause RSI was really starting to me off, and now I'm pretty addicted to ED.

ED is not a game for everyone, and FD should not make it so (here's looking at you, CQC.) FD should concentrate on their niche market and make an awesome game for them. Then good reviews would spread by "word of mouth" and the game would surely and steadily grow. Have a core bunch of players. Take EvE Online and CCP, and look at what they've done.

It's one of the reasons I find the Horizons announcement disappointing. 2 main new feature (planetary landing, crafting), and the rest like Multi-Crew, chained missions, updates to PP are just enhancement to the core mechanics. Enhancements which have been asked for since the game went live (or even before), I believe. https://www.elitedangerous.com/en/shipyard , read the description for the Asp. It is being marketed as a multi-crew ship in Season 1, yet the only time it gets to be a multi-crew ship is when you purchase season 2. I don't really think Horizons will help FD compete with RSI who have all these features out of the box, for half the price. In fact RSI could probably use Horizons as an example to promote SC.

ED biggest advantage right now, is that it's already a fully playable game, with a vast game universe, customizable ships (module swapping), a somewhat realistic representation of the Milkyway (as far as is known to science), and a bunch of passionate players (just look at the Commanders who have created Mobius, Lave Radio, Hutton Orbital, INARA, EDDN, Coriolis, ED Shipyard, ED Connector, etc.) Leverage on these strengths, use it as a foundation and build a great game.

Have fun, fly safe.

P.S.: I'm right now going to go use one of Elite Dangerous' biggest strengths and explore the galaxy, starting from Sol. To the Core!!! :)

Just to respond to costings - RSI will not be half the price of ED for new players. People who purchase Horizons get Season 1 (elite dangerous) included. If this continues with further seasons which most of us believe it will, it will cost the same.

You thought WHAT was pretty cool of them? I see a blank quote box.

That's strange. It's perfectly readable to me.

Either way, here's a paste of it:

SteamVR and HTC's Vive’s high-resolution OLED display make for a truly stunning VR experience. SteamVR support has been up and running at the studio for a while, and Valve's own Chet Faliszek commented on Twitter this week: 'This was my most anticipated game to "test" - lots of "testing".'

It's from the newsletter.

Both are linked weather you like it or not and in a game where freedom of choice of action is paramount to the game griefing is not a factor you can do as you like if that means going on a rampage so be it if it means doing anything you like thats within the remit of freedom cheating is different if proven they should be hammered

i never claimed there was NO problem what i claimed is that players are shouting griefing cheating hacking without any proof other than they died at the hands of another player and they dont like it, another problem of every MMO game

The game is not dying , not by a longshot.

and no , elite is not a grinding machine but if you want to follow the elite hate bandwaggon go ahead , the game will do fine , and is doing fine.
I see CMDRs in space all the time
It may not be dying fast, but slowly. Personally I was a big fan in the beginning and still admire the game. However I have lost the will to play, it just got way too boring and repetitive. IMO what the game lacks is voice acting. You might raise your eyebrows and be like huh? Well personally I feel detached from the galaxy completely. If there were people talking to me, giving me missions, pilots shouting at me as I attack and kill them etc etc(use your imagination) I would feel much more compelled to continue playing, even if the mechanics and grinding remained the same.

Oh and despite your claim to the contrary, yes, it is indeed a grinding machine.

It would seem you missed punctuation and grammar classes in school. Why would anything you say be taken seriously when you can't even discern the difference between "their" and "there"? I'm sorry but when someone can barely spell I have to question their intelligence and the credibility of what they have to say. I am not trying to be insulting or anything. I am simply stating how I view your post and I am sure I am not alone.

This is what I am talking about. What exactly does the weather have to do with anything? It doesn't rain in space.

and you know you have won the arguement when the grammar mafia come out this is a forum not an exam and questioning intelligence based on grammar is invalid Einstein was dyslexic and by your standards is not intelligent because he had problems spelling and with grammar personally i question any one who need to see a full stop to take a breath and as for opinions we all have them the difference is you like dissrepecting others opions i dont! by stating an insult and then stating you not trying to be insulting doesnt not make in less insulting it proves that you insulted on purpose

I have the stats that prove the earth is flat. The horizon is never curved, when it should be, especially looking across the ocean. The horizon rises to your eye level when ascending, shouldn't I be able to look over the horizon if it is curved? There is no gravity, only density. See I proved the earth was flat, just like the OP proved Elite was dying. Even though he never had the stats from people using the launcher, just Steam stats! I proved the earth is flat using similar logic to the OP

Voice acting would be a welcome improvement.

Also - the person could be non-native speaker, just wanted to point out that perhaps you're not trying to be insulting - but you are in fact being insulting and very rude.

I remember a poster we used to have up in school that was like an acrostic:

Different
Individuals
Valuing
Each other
Regardless of
Skin
Intellect
Talent or
Years

They may not be able to coherently or eloquently communicate their opinion but that does not mean their opinion doesn't matter. Rather than be rude, if someone annoys you or you can't stand to read their posts: ignore them.

Ladies and gentlemen.

Do please try to respect each others points of view, and take into account that not everyone on these forums has English as their first language.

Comments about spelling, grammar and punctuation do not help the discussion along. Equally, posts with no punctuation are very difficult to read and also do not help the discussion flow.

So please do your best to avoid these common pitfalls. Thank you.

I'm not entirely sure. From a development perspective is certainly is growing, but I don't see anyone on my steam list playing it, nor has anyone on my xbox one friends list playing it. I understand it's a fairly niche game, not sure how sustainable it is long term though.

I used to share an office with a consultant surgeon who is also director of surgery. He is dyslexic. He specialises in operating on no-hope cases with a high chance of dying. He saves lives every day. Not bad for a dude who can't spell.

The game is not dying. After all it'll be developed for the next 10 years. I've purchased LTS, and I'm planning to play this game for a very long time. The Steam statistics, as the OP already said, are not reliable. I personally never launch the game through Steam.
