Elite Dangerous data : is the game dying or growing ?

I dont expect that ED will ever reach 2 millions unit sold when metacritic users score is 6.5/10 now and going down. http://www.metacritic.com/game/pc/el...&num_items=100

You DO realize that Metacritic means nothing anymore right?

“We’ve basically seen Metacritic all but become obsolete right now… We get obsessed with it…but it doesn’t really matter, as far as the sales of the game.” – Double Fine COO Justin Bailey,

Metascore is meaningless because they weigh each review score differently and nobody but metacritic knows how they do it.

Plus, converting a 4 or 5 star rating system to a numerical value loses a lot in translation.

And I could go on and on and on... As soon as you brought the "weight" of Metacritic in your argument, you lost it.

...according to some ex-backers over in the Kickstarter Comments Section.

Yep, the megathread's still going: 127,036 comments in a single thread, and counting %^]

And I am guessing those Ex-Backers are the ones who got refunds because the Offline Play was dropped, but were quite happy playing it in Alpha form with an Online Only connection..

This is why the Internet makes me so sad... -_-

Eagerly awaiting the post that continues with the doom and gloom despite the recent announcement of what is coming and the immediate effect it had on FDEV share prices.

It's not going to die any time soon. It will fall and rise as new content is added, or other AAA titles appear and gamers migrate back and forth. Once the worthy content arrives those number should go up.

I don't think it will die. I'm still playing games that have long since stopped development and I still enjoy them. So provided there are players to play the game, it won't die. Of course FD have to enable servers to continue after they have finished and walked away from the title, but I think that has already been discussed.
.
If FD get Horizons up and running with some serious planetary landings and variation in game play, then that will be good and help this, 'grind fest' title, its gaining, become less of a target for reviewers or posters to aim at. I think many players and earlier backers are concerned that, what was said to happen and be included in the game during early development, is being done in a more monetary way (seasons). The onus then being that newer people have to keep buying into the game, for it to get those features included. But there again they have to keep the financial side buoyant to keep things ticking along.
.
It won't die anytime soon. However, whether or not it becomes interesting anytime soon, is another question. ;)

if you call losing some of the chaff that want the game to change to eve online or the expectant gold miners that want player to player credits transfers then we can happily do without them you can shove all the solo players out aswell or at least lock them in solo so they cant infect the open game

Wow, you really do just like arguing for the sake of it don't you.

All the above is alive and kicking - just because you don't like how they are going is irrelevant.
I login and play PS1 from time to time and EQ2. Always find people to team up with and play alongside.

Fact is, they are not dead and gone - even when people like yourself said they would be.

Everquest 1 has a live stream coming up in the next few days for an expansion, but lets not have actual facts stop you from saying it is dead.

lol, at least you are making me laugh.

Wow playing an MMO with less players than private servers, exciting!

I almost feel sorry for you for never having a nice large social MMO experience.

Well, I think newsletter #92 should be enough to close this rather puerile thread.

yes. it is very clearly a very doomed franchisestein. dead as a dodo. those twelveteen bobbleheads will only make enough cash for another day or 2.

and then the docking pad 42 at cambridge station will forever close *sigh*

well it was fun while it lasted (not really)

:D

Elite Dangerous though, is alive and kicking ass.

Drawing some fairly large assumptions based on some pretty sparse data there. And ignoring a well known and documented trend that player numbers go down over the summer months, it's why there aren't many game releases. You'll also not that the player numbers dramatically peak and trough to coincide with steam sales and release over the last 5 months so developing a trend from that is going to be iffy at best.

Also this is not a typical MMO model because there is no subscription. People will more happily dip in and out of it, putting it down for a month or 2 when something else they want to play comes out, coming back to ED later. A monthly subscription encourages players to play monthly so they feel like they're getting their monies worth.

But possibly more importantly, FD is a pretty successful business, if it looked like it was going to crash and burn why would they continue to pour resources into further developing this "obviously doomed product"?
