Is this a rip off? Or is this Frontier first encounters all over again?

At least one of the posters in this topic has stated that they used PayPal to pledge after the Kickstarter had finished. That would technically invalidate their personal entitlement for any Kickstarter related guarantees. I would expect that the Kickstarter guarantees apply to "only" 25,681 out of (currently) 43,866 backers.

There are no guarantees with Kickstarter, that's kind of the point. A project can be cancelled and so long as the project owner shows good faith, then there's nothing the backers can do about it.

If the project was clearly a scam that would be different, but that's outside the scope of this discussion.

I'd like to step in here and request that if you have something new to say in reference to the OP's post feel free to discuss it.

If however the thread continues in the same fashion of circular statements and starts to denigrate further with arguments and the suchlike. We will have to consider if it's worth this thread continuing.

So, please think before you post.

Thanks. :)

In that case I think your point is addressed to a straw man position that isn't occupied by anybody posting in this topic.

yes

quite frankly I kind of wish I hadn't posted anything in this thread and don't know what I was thinking.

I'm outta here!

Unfortunately, the thread title states "Is this a rip off?", therefore whether or not the project is a scam is entirely the topic of this discussion....

FWIW, I consider that the thread title has an element of inflammatory bait and switch about it. As to the content of the OP, communications could be better - but communicating for the sake of it (whether or not there is anything to report) simply because there "has" to be a communication every two weeks would be a bit pointless.

What some people consider to be a 'slap in the face' is a 'kiss on the cheek' for others. You have to respect other people's point of view.

Different folks, different strokes, etc. ;)

Still not a slap in the face ... unless they felt that being asked to pledge for Alpha access in the KS campaign was a slap in the face.

Nothing changed between now and then. People have the option to upgrade to the alpha if they want.

I'm all for people having different views, but only when they are valid :)

more. You get exactly what it says you get when you backed the KS ..

My point exactly. From the KS FAQ, when a project slips the developer is expected to share the story with the backers, speedbumps and all.

Thank you for underlining my point so succinctly.

KS FAQ is not exactly legally binding rules, they are just guidelines :)

Absolutely correct, but they set an expectation, "you get what it says", as the other poster put it. And one imagines, a KS developer would take KS guidelines as inputs into the development of their comms plan. It seems FD, perhaps unwittingly, failed to put those guidelines into practice.

I think you have to be able to walk a mile in someone else's shoes before you can judge them.

They have done all this and more. The project slipped from its estimated March 2014 target, no surprises there, projects slip, especially software ones. This is made clear on the KS website FAQs. So, we know where we are at and there is no need for a video where David Braben sobs to the camera and pleads to us all for forgiveness at the slight delay.

Thus we are as informed as we need to be. The timetable is back a bit from what they originally estimated, but nevertheless, the alpha is at stage two, and we know there are two more alpha stages, then it is beta (so we can make a reasonably informed guess how long it is until beta if we extrapolate that info). There are numerous sources for this information, including the Frontier Developments website, so it is easy to find it, hell you can even read their AIM stock market report there if you really want to know what is going on in microscopic detail.

So, unless anyone wants David Braben to drive round to their house and personally read that information out to them, perhaps bringing them a nice cake when he does so and offering to make them a cup of tea, there's very little more FD need to do in order to have covered that base.

Make that happen.

I like cake.

And with that, all arguments thoroughly exhausted after swimming in circles for many days, the thread slipped beneath the inky waves - leaving but a ripple, never to be seen again....*

Onlookers shook their heads sadly, saluted briefly and prepared for the next Great Newtonian Wars that had been long foretold, and were due just-about-any-day-now.

*....please God, please, please, please........

Make that happen.

:) Stop coming back then! Go and get a nice hot cup of tea.

I know that's what I am doing.

But it is a bit like passing a car accident this one. Having a quick peek to look for red smears and body parts, but then when you do see something you don't like, wishing you'd not looked back.

I'm going to dive in with my own KS experiences. I backed quite a few projects including Godus. If you think the communication is poor from Frontier (which I don't for what it's worth) then you would go mad at 22 cans the creators of Godus who have basically vanished in the wind and barely been heard from since September. Compare that with Limit Theory where there is a daily log and monthly video. The other projects I backed all communicate far more poorly than Frontier. So while some may feel that Frontier should be saying more in my experience they are doing pretty well.

As for comparing this with FFE, eh...no. It was rushed out to suit the publishers, this project will be ready when Frontier are confident it is good enough and not before.

+1 to Chock for God humor..

This thread needs to be targeted, nuked, and put out of it's misery.

Maybe I should make an animation of that happening.. nah -

This tells it all.. the powers that be need to push the button..
