UA Mystery Thread 3: The Canonn

In all the furore of 'seasons' announcements and CQC controversy, it's easy to forget we're getting 3 major updates in consecutive months having waited around 3 for each previous ones. Even with the new ability to inject content to existing builds FD have indicated, consecutive major updates offer a great story development opportunity.

If you mean 1.4, 1.5, and Horizons, last I heard 1.5 and Horizons were coming out at the same time, sometime in December. I.e. 1.5 is essentially the "free to Season 1 players" part of the Horizons update. If that's not the case, could you please point me to an official source?

I did post a copy of my changes there (though slightly older version I think) but unfortunately Google Drive opens HTML pages as source code rather than a webpage. Dropbox opens them as a webpage so you don't need to download the page first.

Do the UAs ever turn up in Merope? I know they don't turn up everywhere, so their absence itself isn't evidence. But if I were sending out probes to scout the galaxy, I wouldn't bother putting them in my own backyard, which I already know all about.

There were at least two found in Merope in 1.3. I haven't heard of any found there in 1.4. There have been plenty of Cmdrs there for Operation Scour 2 so we know they are not as common in Merope as they are in Aries Dark Region GW-W d1-52 and surrounding systems, if they appear at all.

Scour II continuation

For those wondering what's been covered already, I've done a few quick searches and pulled together the following list (which is likely wildy inaccurate, so please feel free to pick apart and add to as needed). Appears there's been a little duplication, but not too much. Feels like we could do with a group spreadsheet for this in future?

Inner System Corridors (all I think)

Outer System Corridors:

Sterope II (duplicated)
Maia
Celaeno
Pleione
Atlas
PLEIADES SECTOR DL-Y D65 (duplicated)
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-41
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-42
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-24
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-77
Pleiades Sector HR-W D1-79
PLEIADES SECTOR IH-V C2-15
PLEIADES SECTOR IH-V C2-16
PLEIADES SECTOR IH-V C2-17
Pleiades Sector IH-V C2-18
Pleiades Sector KC-V C2-9
Pleiades Sector KC-V C2-16
Pleiades Sector KC-V C2-15
Pleiades Sector PD-S B4-1
Pleiades Sector PD-S B4-0
PLEIADES SECTOR RY-R B4-1

I haven't looked at which Asteroid Belts were covered.

Apologies if I've missed something you spent ages at, I've not been especially thorough.

Currently doing PLEIADES SECTOR EB-X C1-14

(Apologies for the oversight on directly updating Scour’s progress through the tasks or not doing it before zonking off. Duly noted at Powell Tower should I ‘run’ something similar in the future!)
SCOUR: EGX SKINS PRIZES!

I’d intended to do this later but RL’s got its funny ways, so now it is, after a cursory check on the reports that I’d missed while off-line. (Should anybody not included put in other reports from now, sorry if it means you’ve missed the raffle list.)
As previously mentioned, there are 2 EGX Skins knocking about. One for raffling, one for… well, basically… Man of the Match as it were. I shall check in with Lord Zoltan/Huros about which access details to PM the winners. If you’ve won one, I shall get the means/codes to you in due course.

So. I borrowed a pad off McCann for this. He’s not using it. He’s conked out after overdoing it on the, ah, medicinal research now that I’m shifting ships for Operation: Stockpile. Anyway, as you can probably guess, I’ve scribbled the name of all those who reported in from Scour on a page each. Screwed ‘em all up good and tight. Going to pick the winner from a hat.
(Going to throw all the rubbish afterwards into the hold. Finally found a way for that little Floater snothead do something useful for a change. It’s now part of the crew. Gave it a job. Well, an intern position; doesn’t seem to have any bank details to give me so I can’t pay it. Not that I mind. Got it handling Refuse Management. We throw all kinds of cr@p in there now, let its toxic munkum deal with it.)
And I’m just being passed the hat by my 2nd Officer Fiermonte. Well, it’s her flightsuit’s helmet but, hey, whatever works, right? Thankyou, Amanda. Did you do something with your hair?
Anyway. Right. Let’s unfold this. (And type some more words here to pad this out. Did you catch the zero-g cricket last ni… Ah. Being prodded by Fiermonte. Fair play.)

And the winner iiiiis….
Hustler Eravate Wives! Well done, Commander Hustler Eravate Wi… Wait a minute. This is McCann's shopping list! ‘Manda, what’s up? You’ve gone all red. Here, let me pull another one. Right! The actual winner iiiissss….
The Elite-ranked ex-pacifists themsevles… Delmonte & Outspan!
Well, that fits. You might have had some not inconsiderable gyp with the game and RNGesus may not have been smiling on you, but at least the Raffle Fates were on your side, it seems. (Plus, you know, that whole McCann’s shopping list joke and your sig… Funny where inspiration strikes sometimes, innit? Just saying.)
And the ‘discretionary award’ goes to me! Yes! ME! How about that? I’ve got myself a lovely EGX Skin! Gosh. How did that happen? Gerroff! It’s mine! No, only joking, but I might have to give Fiermonte one* if she can keep from winding McCann up when he comes ‘round.

Okay, no. Not me. This one goes to Cmdr Silent Pact. There were a couple of true stars of Scour yesterday, and they know who they were and I’m sure others may’ve had their own guesses as to who I’d pick. But for signing on from 6am and being there right up until so very late, cracking on with several tasks and… still ‘phewing’ about it… not getting splashed by that pack of angry pirate sods. Well, it comes as no surprised to a couple of the others, I know. Very strong work and for such good humour with it all yesterday, Silent Pact. Enjoy the Skin.

Mind you, a Special Mention must also go to Derthek. With his mini-Death Star of mining lasers for one, but also the whole affair with the stalkingly persistent NPC and that whole ‘UA Chase’ series of events. (Got a fair bit of theorising going even towards the end of the evening, that did. Probably going to be cited in a few conversations about approaches to the UA mystery.) Nice one, Councillor!

Oh, and Edelgard von Rhein, you write a bloody lovely report, commander! o7

(Actually, in lieu of any crew members, helmets or shenanigans, for the raffle I just listed the names by a number and rolled one of my geek dice. Twice. Nobody was #19. Kyp, “You are Number Six.” Figured that suited you since you seemed unable to escape the place no matter how hard you tried!)

But frivolity aside, I come here not to thank them but to praise them. All of the fellow sciencers who contributed to Scour yesterday/today. Didn’t we all have a staggeringly exciting time of it, mooching about Merope? Well, no, Teamspeak chatter notwithstanding, it wasn’t exactly unbridled fun but we got a lot of work done. In brief: all the Inner System with some great corroborative duplication, the Asteroids and a healthy chunk of the Outer Corridors. I shall be handling some RL work and then getting to Stockpile but I expect I shall be shoving up some manner of Scour review tomorrow.

Oh, but I lied. I do thank you, too. I had Gutteridge make some jokey Varati Scouts Association badges for Scouring. 

Right, then… Where’d I leave that Refereeing Viper…?

*A discretionary award! What’s got into you? Really!

Even if Men in Black is an awesome movie, it doesn't mean that a Bug is always an Alien ;)
I think you're a little quick to dismiss what appears to be pretty complex behavior as a bug.
Must be connected to your misconception that Men in Black supposedly is an awesome movie. It's good fun, but far from awesome. ;-) Better watch K-Pax.

But since we currently have no other useful leads than "it points at Merope" I'll see that I get some information from the affected commander, in order to pin this down as a definitive bug or as odd behavior that may or may not be linked to the UA. I'm too far away to go have a look at the Pleiades anyway.

I've experienced the same bug but in a CZ, every ship suddenly vanished!
even when I left and came back the CZ remained empty, ended up having to go to another CZ for some action

It's in the Pleiades. We've done extensive testing there.

Ahem. Are doing... ;)

Scour II Report

Cmdr Reporting: Timsk
Wing: None
UA on board: None
Outer System Corridor: PLEIADES SECTOR EB-X C1-14 (to ~28.5KLS)
Honk: Every 500-1000LS (got all giddy when it discovered 1 new object at 613 LS, but it was an Asteroid Belt)
Signal Sources:
- Weak 336 LS - 2 x Ancient Artefact (scooped), Something out of sensor range - disappeared while I was scooping
- Strong 2854 LS - Wing of 3 defence force, Type-9 (Res Separators, Marine Eqpt, Antiquities), 2 x Condas (empty) - no chatter
- Weak 10628 LS - Wreckage (Conda), 4 x Rebel Transmissions (scooped, but rebelling against transmitting what? the quiet out here?)
- Salvage 16087 LS - Sparse Wreckage (Conda), 1 x Occupied Escape Pod (scooped)
Observations:
CMDR Anjin scooting about looking for interesting things around the inner system

But it sounds like those ships vanished pretty much right in front of him. Is that what happened to you?
I have myself found myself in cleared out CZs once or twice, but this sounds a bit different to me.

I was in a wing so we assumed it was an instancing bug

It's lovely at this time of year, but somewhat overcrowded with NPCs with no reasonably explained reason for being there.
And what is in MEROPE? Anyone has been there?

Brilliant deduction MJK!

Having had time to calm down and sleep on it, I've realised some things about the UA...

When MB said about "Have you listened to them?", he was drawing our attention to the fact that the sound contained encoded text. In 1.3 that text was the name of the nearest star, planet or station. It got our attention to listen for that message. It was essentially a Rosetta Stone, teaching us a way to extract the message from the audio.

Now that the Morse code part of the message was clearly established in 1.3, 1.4 brings a change in the Morse message. A string of letters that come in batches of 6. Many people brought their collective experience to bear on the problem, and MKJ built on the work of rizal72, LordZoltan and others to make the leap of inspiration. 2D coordinates of triangles on a 26x26 alphabetical grid.

We were given a puzzle. We learnt the language of the puzzle. The puzzle changed, and we've recognised the change and adapted to it

Out of game, it shows FDev that we can take on these kinds of puzzles as a collaborative effort.
In-game, it shows FDev that they can push on to the next page or chapter of the UA " story".

Where do we go from here?
Keep listening to the UAs to see if the message changes again.
Determine WHY UAs point towards Merope now.
Determine why the UAs pulse green and people.
Determine if the other UA sounds contain some sort of message.
Keep eyes open for unusual *SS or new BB missions that might push the story along.

We've been through nursery (finding UAs), entered infants school (learnt how they carry messages) and just graduated to junior school (read a complex message). ;)
