SC cloning Elite..

You seemed to be suggesting that people get out there and do the promotion anyway. Which is fine if that's what people want to do, but I'm not really on board with doing free marketing for commercial companies. :)

Yes, I'm one of those who gladly advocate for both ED and SC without getting paid. I guess that's one big difference of being a fan or just a player. And also one big reason why SC has gathered so many more pledgers.

There's different levels of fandom though. It's not an either/or equation.

I guess that if the games are good then people will sell them by word of mouth and forums etc etc in any case.

The nice thing with ED is that the game is being played in the form of an alpha right now. SC will need to wait for DFM before people can really comment on the gameplay.

Well funny than you mentioned MSDOS, since that OS and Windows following ONLY where successful because of clever marketing deals. MSDOS was initially developed as QDOS, Quick and Dirty Operating System and plagiarized CP/M. It was successful because it was pre-installed on all IBM computers, followed by vendor-lock in. Ever heard of the superior OSs like OS/2 or NextStep? Because of software compatibility normal end users where forced to use windows until OSX and only IOS and android have the potential to break this lock. MS execs never bothered with software development quality and instead focused on marketing. It's the prime example how marketing can easily trump quality. Don't get me wrong, I hate marketing and advertising, I think it should be banned, but it's a necessary evil.

I don't want to spell doom and gloom here, but in a stunning reversal of this threads topic I think FD should clone some of the marketing ideas from SC.

Now check this out about MS-DOS vs DR-DOS (The successor of CP/M)

So what is a compelling selling point about Elite Dangerous? Procedural Generation. What has been just announced for Star Citizen? Procedural Generation (research for a small portion of the game maybe someday). FUD?

Of course FD is doing a great job with ED and will produce a great game, but the first version will be somewhat limited. Some people will be disappointed, many will stop playing after they have enough money to purchase the biggest weapons and biggest ships. It's long term success will depend on how fast and big expansions will be, and that will depend on sales numbers, and those depend on people knowing about the game. And that depends on spreading the word, in other words marketing. I appreciate the British reserved dignity, but for marketing screaming bloody murder is the right way to go. Comms are low atm, when they should be stepped up.

One could also argue that MS-DOS what successful due to Digital Research inability to do something as simple as coming to terms with IBM on a petty subject of non - disclosure agreement. It wasn't a question of marketing at that exact point. But, i agree, for what i was trying to say, DOS probably is a bad example.

Sure, SC wants procedural generation too, but it's scale and depth is nowhere near that of Elite. Not to mention SC is years away and is merely a phantom as of yet, selling ships for laughable amounts of money, ships which you will get in the game anyway. I am content with David not cloning SC's silly marketing ideas.

And no guilds, thank you. :)

see SC is really putting its weight behind guild support and organisations. I think thats doable in that game where there are limited number of planets. Im just not sure aside from fighting over bengal carriers what the guild focus will be in terms of "putting a flag down" and calling something tangible theirs to defend.

Eh? I'll take a "silly" idea that makes me $39m and climbing any day of the week. I rack my brains out every day trying to come up a silly dea that will allow me to retire and work on a project that I would love doing.

And there is no-one to blame but ourselves seeing as you get everything, the game/beta/alpha for $40.

And why not have corporations? Like the ships, no-one is forcing you to join one but its nice to have the feature there should you so choose.

I agree with you about the PG stuff but some PG is better than none and it can be expanded/worked on. I'd rather have a feature in than not.
