UA Mystery Thread 3: The Canonn

Thread Closed: Not open for further replies.
Just checked this out myself. At 700 Ls, the dark side of Aries Dark Region TE-P B6-3 1 is too small to see. Which is not surprising as it's about the same size as mercury and you're looking at it from mars. If you're next to the sun you can see it from a couple of hundred Ls because of the reflected light, but from the dark side you need to be within a hundred Ls.

Anyway, everything seems normal in the system.

Look at my scanner though; nothing there aside from the planet over 700Ls away when the wake was less than 1Ls away. It's not just an issue of the planet being hard-to-see, it actually was not there. That said, I do think it's not that relevant and due to a bug, but still it's worth clarifying this point, I feel, as it may come into play if at some point we are looking for legitimate rogue planets, we need to be aware of the potential for false positives.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to what happens next? I'm not sure if I want to keep this ua on board if there is nothing else to be done with it... is a trip out to merope/pleione a good idea? Don't want to be wasting my time if it's already been done or a pointless exercise...

I wouldn't bother keeping it. They're easy to come by now, so no real reason to hold on to it. When the idea for a new test comes, it'll be trivial to find another UA.

A Brief Synopsis of The Canonn's Research into the Unknown Artefacts.

So... welcome to paranoia central. Grab a tin-foil hat and some biscuits. There are plenty to go around.

heh heh. I love it when I go away for two weeks for work, and someone sums up the thread when I randomly check in. So, line drawings, eh? Any good ones? Have we had it scan every ship type yet? Anyone dropped one by a capital ship since the new 1.4 behavior?

edit: or have we found everything new UA related in 1.4 already, and now we just wait for 1.5?

edit 2: should I bother reading back before Red's summary?

Still can't get past the same question with the latest discovery. If it were INRA, Dark Wheel, Emperor's Dawn, etc. what is the point of the ship diagram? The morse would just spell out Cobra, Asp, Sidewinder, etc.

But if it's not a human construct, why use morse at all? And how would it know the human celestial object designations?

So who or what knows morse, knows the starmap, and doesn't know the ship types? The only thing I can possibly reconcile is that they are from a species that learned the morse from us (Voyager or some such) are trying to communicate with us in some way, and are now trying to assess our ships (combat capabilities?). But then the starmap doesn't fit, unless there's some handwavium about how the UA gets the information from our ships, even if we haven't scanned the celestial object yet or don't have a scanner.

If it is something trying to communicate, then maybe the next step would be to change the morse to a grid drawing of something new. Something we need to look for...

If anything that makes it more likely to be Thargoid - they've had contact with humans before. They have all kinds of data about us, but in the past did not understand us well enough to make proper contact (their attempts at communicating in English were... amusing). No doubt their own scientists have learned enough so that they CAN use Morse and human star system designations. The question then becomes why.

I would suggest that they WANT us to know what information is being sent.

That, by its very nature, makes it a non-threatening gesture. If they made things plain and obvious, we wouldn't take the data we're decoding at face value and assume it's a trick. But if we can decode it and see that it's not hostile in nature, we won't be as likely to panic and initiate hostilities.

A follow up question is the lack of content - Think about it. There is no way to verify this but from a game and story POV, the Morse code is what we're intended to decode. But how could that be ALL that's being sent? The bloody Voyager probes send far more information than that.

So while it's only an assumption, I think we have to assume a LOT more information is being transmitted than that, and what we decode via Morse is effectively a sample that gets across what the rest of it (all that indecipherable noise and chatter that make up its background sound) is.

As for me, I'm going to be away from the game for a good long while. Life's come up, and I can't pass this opportunity by. When I do come back I likely wont be doing much meta (no forums, no reddit) but I will definitely swing by the website from time to time. You'll mostly find me in game and on the TeamSpeak :)

Hey Derthek,

Was not going to bother reading back past Red's summary until I saw mention of your departure. Take care, and I hope the opportunity is successful. As Han Zen says, you'll be back, I am sure.

Just wondering but have we shown a free floater UA or picked up UA all the ships in the game?

looks like rizal done all of them apart from the new ships in 1.4
Hello CMDRs, it is with great joy that I present you the full definitive sequences list, for all the ships ;)
I must say I had to manually make some slight corrections to some coordinates that were surely wrong, making the ship awful sometimes. The Cobra is an example.
The dropship(s) is/are completely wrong: but there is one drawing for all the ship versions.
I still don't know if it is my mistake in translating the morse, or an original mistake from FD while "creating" the sequences. Even the 5 letters sequences were an error, in my opinion: I manually added what I think was the correct missing letter.

I've highlighted my corrections in bold.

Vulture and Diamondbacks the most detailed ships, Cobra and Sidewinder the most "Vintage", special mention for FdL and Viper.
Worst drawings: Python and Dropships.

All I did, I did for Science! (...and for a signed artwork from David Braben...) :D

Space Whales

Oh yes.

By look how visually similar the Wings Trailer: http://youtu.be/G-4xHtCP1Yo

And the Levithan Teaser by Ruari Robinson: http://youtu.be/s-45NTlgp-o

The colour use and the camera angles are similar.

The ship at the end of the teaser even looks like a T7 when seem from abowe.

The two videos were published on the 13th and 16th of March.

Some sneak markering by FD perhaps?
They at lest made me search for Leviathans by calling the commander Ishmael.

Think about it. If you have a limited bandwidth with low data rate, how do you send a 3d representation of the ship that scanned you? Pixels take a lot of bandwidth and need a high data rate to transmit in a reasonable time. A vector image takes far less bandwidth and can maintain coherence at low data rates.

I'm leaning towards advanced human designed AI as opposed to xenos.

See ya on the flip side Derthek its been fun.

Sorry for riding in your thread Clavain I'm on my phone :)

If there's several pilots in the same instance, do they each get their own morse or do they all get the same one?

That's a good question: I suspect that both ships drawings should be transmitted in a sequence. But we should definitely test it, for Science ;)

EDIT: now that I remember well, it was already tested: two CMDRs will hear different morses. Every CMDR will hear the morse relative to his ship ;) unless they are using the same ship...

EDIT2: I'm almost sure that the new ships will hear the morse of the similar ship: example, the Imperial Eagle will receive the morse of the Eagle. The Assault Ship and the Gunship will hear the morse of the Dropship.
