The only thing I don't like so far is the name.

Obviously the name must stay at this point, I thought it odd at first but got used to it and now I like it. But while you're musing on this again I think

Elite: 3300

might have been good. Elite players know it is Elite, Frontier Players get the 3300 hundred bit. Both groups squeal with delight. To new players I think this would sound pretty intriguing and the 3300 makes it clear it is going to be a sci-fi game.

I don't like that it reminds me of the tv show "the 4400" I did not like that show either

I've always thought the title slightly messy.

Both words taken outside the specific context of the Elite universe go well together - and make for a pretty good abstract title for a space adventure.
But given that we're in the Elite universe, and these words are both levels of a pilot's status, it has a rather odd dynamic to it and plots something of a diminuendo.

Exemplary: Pretty Good
Massive: Fairly sizey
There: Not Quite There

But enough time and exposure has passed, reinforcing the title's connection with something that thrills me, so it doesn't bother me anymore!
Conditioning at its best! :)

Elite: Snakes ARE the Planes.

But seriously, while I agree the name doesn't transport what the game is to outsiders, that's not a requirement. After all, "Tribes" wasn't really about people throwing pointy sticks at each other either, "Ghost Recon" contained not a single undead, and "Colonial Marines" didn't feature rectal examinations of professional combat units. And none of those games flopped.

Well okay almost none of them.

I think you've managed to highlight what it is about the name that's been bugging me ever since I heard it for the first time.

Why not Elite: Deadly, or Elite: Competent?

I would have loved something like Elite:Legacy, or Elite:Legend.

Elite: Dangerous sounds a bit iffy. My preference: Elite: Resurgence, or Elite: Renaissance. Doubles as the return of the game IRL and a new age of human expansion in game.

I like the name Elite Dangerous, it sounds cool. But there are some problems:

"Elite Dangerous" contains no link to space in the title. Neither Elite nor Dangerous implies space, sci fi or MMO.
But it gets worse: Elite has become a dirty word referring to a privileged class (the 1% etc), instead of individuals with exceptional abilities. Elite provokes the idea of a aloof and secluded group, that is today mostly perceived as adversarial to the majority, instead of being positive as a force that pushes mankind further (into space).

In contrast, "Star citizen" says it all: Common folk play an MMO among the stars. People who know nothing else only need to read those two words in a list to be interested.

Actually I am inclined to agree with Liqua that the name of this game should just be:

-- Elite --

Look at all the current movie reboots - The Amazing Spiderman. Star Trek. Or the game Tomb Raider. They don't tack anything behind the names. They're reboots of the originals (ok granted Trekkies consider JJTrek as alternate timeline and not canon)

Granted, this is not a reboot, but I personally think of this game as a "reboot" myself. This is what the 1984 Elite "would have been like" if the current-day technology was available back then :)

But.. please, not "Elite Rebirth" :D

I find the proposed name the most telling - unless they stick with old Elite IV or plain Elite.

A few of my 'non serious' titles :-

Elite - Thargoid Revenge
Elite - When good Thargoids go Bad
Elite - Space Off
Elite - Dock if you dare

I really like the sound of the first one. Personally though since I am old enough to have played the original and all the sequels I actually think of this new game as Elite IV and refer to it as such when asked about the game even though the developers appear to be avoiding using that name like the plague.

Some more suggestions...

Elite: This one really won't be on the Amiga

Elite: Jumpers to Lightspeed

Elite: Grand-dads in space

Elite: Now you can crash whilst docking in 4K HD

Elite: Try and give this one to your mate on a C60 cassette

Elite: Let the ganking commence...

Elite: You'll need 3,850 1.2Mb floppies to back this version up

Control+Alt+dELITE

Elite: In space, no-one can hear you pledge 200 quid

Elite: Squadron 43 :D

After I wrote my original post I was struck by a thought and that was hasn't David Braben already explained somewhere exactly why the name Elite: Dangerous was chosen for the game. If I imagined this and David hasn't explained this then it would be great if either he or Michael could take time out from their busy schedules ( and their time actually playing the game :D) to tell us why the name was chosen.

I may be wrong in remembering this...

I believe they did not what to use a number because that could suggest other separate games, Elite V, Elite VI, Elite VII etc...

What they want to do is make this the definitive game needing no sequels.

I could of course have made this all up or dreamt it

No Elite: Deadly, then?
