I've decided to practice my writing a little as I go (I certainly need the practice), so I'm writing mine in-character and plan on adding a little bit of story to it as I go along. (As such, there is some strong language from time to time.) Here's the link: http://orionstarbard.tumblr.com/
To give an idea of what's to come, I'm currently working on a neutron field, but plan on moving on pretty soon. I'll swing back by Sgr A* and the Great Annihilator before making my way to the far edge of the galaxy, and then I'll wend my way home along the Carina-Sagittarius Arm.

I fear I hadn't found your post before, but here. As a guide I wrote a Popular Guide to Exploration. Easy to digest slideshow with a touch of humor, basically.

I will add to the list now, may I suggest :
1. get rid of "silent running" binding , it is the most dangerous binding in the game !!!
2. post it in this forum too
3. take a shield, believe me it is worth it just for getting back home and being interdicted(player or NPC). To save on power usage and heat, disable your shields once you are out of the bubble and remember to switch it back on when coming back.
4. take AFMUs with you, it is worth it and they are light. Leave them off till you need them.
Thanks for the advice Dognosh, I'll get on it this weekend. It was actually there, till our community guy Zac moved my topic to the game guides, way out there in the black. XD

Hi all Cmdr’s, just got back from exploring, made Elite thanks to this great thread.
Did loose a lot of data due to the update hope I get it back!

Some feedback observations that may help other explorers.
Can confirm these are good places for
Neutron Stars and Black Holes.
(Press stop! after jump, scan, 180, accelerate away then honk.)
CHROABS, BYUA AIN, BLU AIR & FROARKS (all close to each other).
2 Ship – Asp
Loadout
Bulkheads – Lightweight Alloy
Power Plant - D5
Thrusters – A5
Frame Shift Drive – A5
Life Support - A4
Power Distributer – A2
Sensors – D5
Fuel tank – C5
Fuel Scoop – D6
Advanced Discovery Scanner – C1
Detailed Surface Scanner – C1
All other compartments empty.
Note:
Tried AFMU’s, not impressed would never use them again.
Shields are not required when exploring, I was interdicted on my return but had another destination ready.
Submit (s=slowdown), wait for cool down to complete, jump, boost, max speed, boost and your gone!
Here is my best first discovered system.
One black hole and 3 Neutrons Stars.
