News Sneak Peek #4 - SRV to the rescue

I'm curious about the crane moving a large rectangular "shipping container" and the stacks of similar containers of different colour on the loading dock. Our ships carry cargo in canisters correct? We don't jettison large rectangular containers of cargo.
So, are these containers for a new larger capacity cargo ship? are they for ground transportation on a vehicle similar to a lorry or monorail train? Or are they just artistic bits that serve no function other than to add some scenery?

The base looks really good, and I have a feeling that landing at one is going to be quite fun for some time, especially if there are a variety of bases and docking pads.

That crane looks somewhat over-engineered to lift a few cargo canisters - it could lift an Anaconda I would think. I assume that's by design rather than just "stick a big crane there."

Yes, it does seem rather large for just lifting a container. I agree it may lift other things, such as ships or vehicles, and perhaps it was utilized in the construction of the base itself before being tasked with moving the containers. However, it is the containers themselves which I'm interested in and what use, if any, they may serve in the Horizons expansion.

We are getting real close to this bit after bit.

Some people talking about the containers and such, in that concept art (or fan art) there are two yellow and quite big vehicles. Thinking about those it comes to my mind that we should not forget about the fact that we will see more types of SRV's in the game. And by that I hope to see bigger models as well, with more cargo capacity for the bigger cargo ships.

Imagine using those bigger cargo doors (the ones that will be used to release a fighter ship from an Anaconda for example) to release bigger SRV's (more like space trucks!). Having the option of carrying a "secondary" ship inside or a massive "space truck" could be so awesome in my opinion.

We have a decent amount of ships, now we also have land...bring that variety to the ground!

My 2 cents.

PS: A space truck without any defence at all in need of a pair of Scarabs to defend him...oh man. (Shut up brain!!)

PS2: Hi, brain here again, and what about multi crew inside of those vehicles and now with defences, like other guys controlling your turrets!!! (keep talking to me brain...)

Absolutely loving these updates.
I predict that as soon as beta is released, 100's of people will suddenly come down with a mysterious illness and wont be able to work for a week or more. :D

One request though... All clips and live streams so far have been focused on rocky bodies and I'd really really like to see more variety such as how an icy or a metal rich body looks and feels when driving around.

I'd like to add my appreciation of the game to Sir David and his amazing team. This is how my games of Elite on my BBC micro always looked and felt in my head, it just so amazingly detailed and the game play is as addictive as ever.
I finally got around to having a couple of hours session on my 3D projector on a 120" screen (any chance of a frame packed option?), and sound through my 7.1 amp setup. Just brilliant. That Audio award should have gone your way, I can''t imagine what the other games sound must be like.

I suspect that a 'Grand Turismo in space' is not far off for the Xbox (and others).

I'm really, really hoping the next stream with SRV action shows driving at speed and firing. We've seen several videos of the SRVs zooming without shooting, while taking fire. And one of the SRV driving about very slowly and gingerly while firing back. I'd love to see how easy and practical it is to drive about a base, avoiding fire, while simultaneously firing back.

It seems to me it might be very tricky to do. I'm hoping it doesn't end up with us pulling over every time we engage Skimmers as it's too awkward to do both at the same time.

Im interested in the addons that will be available to both horizons and vanilla users. im hoping that a lot more content is added to vanilla. i have the lifetime pass so it wouldn't affect me but i would like there to be more reason for other vets to come back or stay in the game that cant afford the expansions. Also adding more to the terrain at least from what we seen. looks like most of the screens and vids are from the same planet. ice and possible semi atmospheric worlds possible? mars doesn't have much of an atmosphere would that be considered a barren world. either way im looking forward to the expansion and the reskin of the planets to make them more detailed. anyone seen a screencap of that yet?
