News Elite: Dangerous will support Oculus Rift

They have mentioned that they want the Oculus Rift consumer version to be an affordable peripheral, so were talking about $300 or less.

Not sure if that will do the traditional consumer thing where it comes to the UK and the dollars go through a strange transformation to pounds that avoids the exchange rate.

But we won't know until it is released.

So $300 = £275-299 then

Not sure I could justify best part of £300 just to look at a couple of games differently. £200'ish maybe...

Hopefully it will be $300 = £179.5 (current exchange rate)
Treasure Island (UK) doesn't work that way.

As an example, it recently came to light, if you booked a stay/visit at Euro Disney, if you changed your language setting on their website to French instead of English, prices dropped by around 10-20%! Same accommodation, tickets etc, just we Brits get charged 10-20% more!

And this is why an OR at $299 with be 250-£299!

Hmm as a test I just had a look at the iPad mini it's $299 in the US and £249 in the UK.

Looks like you could be right.

The thing is, the OR (and other VR headsets) aren't really going to be just a gaming peripheral or TrackIR competitor.

They actually "put you" in the simulated world that your computer creates - and that won't necessarily be a game. As far as your brain is concerned, your not looking at the world, but are a part of it.

It's probably the closest thing to a personal holodeck we're going to see for a long time, and at that price, frankly £300 is an expensive bargain.

The game will support 3D TV (it already does for the standard type), personally I prefer Oculus, it's far more immersive.

Michael

I've asked this before, but it must have got lost in the masses of posts. Will it be technically possible** to have three (large) monitors set up so that the left one shows the left view outside, and the left interior side of the cockpit, the right one the right views and the forward one, forward views? The cockpit interior views would then be stable; you'd move your head to look around. This would also be immersive.

Of course, to complete the picture, I'd probably want a forth monitor above the 'cockpit' for the ceiling view.

** I know it's technically possible, but I mean is there a version of the software that will support it, or do we HAVE to have a movement following accessory (OR or other) to follow head movement?

The simple answer is technically yes it is possible, in a game engine it's just a matter of setting up a camera facing the relevant directions in game. The problem will be configuring this and having a PC with enough GPU power to update all 4 displays.

But cheaper to get a VR HMD and turn your head.

Regarding the OR pricing, in the UK we will pay the same in pounds sterling that those in the US pay in dollars and the reason for this will be so that our UK inflated price subsidises the US price making it even cheaper.

Of course you could always jump on a plane and go buy one (or three) from NY but then they would have thought of that, so odds on it won't work in Europe.

It's how territories work. :D

For people who have the Dev Kit:

How long have you comfortably played a game (particularly ED for those Alphans in thread) with an OR strapped to your head.

My inexperienced view thinks you could only last an hour or two at a go.

Indeed it's very technically possible, however so far there's no indication at all that FD intend to put such "proper" multimonitor tech into ED. They've basically said that stretching over a few monitors horizontally is supported but that they're not looking at anything better (e.g. multiple independent camera views in order to correctly render to separate monitors, etc). Which is a real shame as personally I'd be more excited about that than OR.

You and me both

your view is correct. I can last longer in ED than any other game though, because its actually playable in the rift and doesn't make me feel sick. I can't say I've done more than an hour of straight rift play before needing a break.

Make me so happy to read this, as my Oculus is due to arrive monday.

If the valve research on VR is any good, the consumer version of the OC should be much better about vr sickness.

From reports I've read people are estimating around $450.
I don't think there is any chance it will be sub 300....happy to be wrong though :)
