Insomnia FX Elite - Complete Suite

Well, consider me a convert. I always thought the game looked great (besides the current issues that we won't talk about here). I always thought there's no need for something like this. Then I figured I may as well give it a try and see what all the fuss is about.

Oh. Now I get it.

Did some tweaking already and am using my own graphicsconfiguration.xml (which I always thought was enough...until now). The first thing I did was turn off film grain because my brain simply can't handle it. Then I realized that everything near black is crushed out of existence, though I'm guessing that's by choice? Could be my monitor too, it's a Dell U2414H which is very accurate and I can see everything down to the darkest of darks. Turning off curves and tonemap seems to have brought back the dark details and I can see all the space dust again!

Now I'm going to spend hours upon hours in config files instead of playing the game. Totally worth it. Can't give more rep yet.

Grab the latest ReShade. It includes a utility that really makes it easy to change and apply effects. You won't have to manually edit the text files or try to figure out what all that means. Pick an effect, change its settings, apply to profile, permanently add to game (copies the config files, alt-tab back to game and see the changes.

Or, you can take a vanilla screenshot and use that offline to see the changes...don't even need the game running!

Already done! I'm never going to accomplish anything other than screenshots from now on...

I also found myself missing some details, so I went through all the ReShade parts and disabled pretty much everything except Gaussian Anamorphic Lensflare, as that (well, and Anamorphic Lensflare minus the "Gaussian") is the only thing capable of giving earth-like and oceanic worlds the same intensity of blue as shown on many pictures of earth shot by satellites. Now, of course there's many alterations to these images and I for sure can't tell which are shopped and which aren't, but what they do have in common is that the blue of oceans is a bit darker and way more intense than what I see in the game using unaltered color settings.

Another thing that I gave a once over was the galaxy and how it looks when I look "hubwards" (;)). If pictures on the web are to be believed, the milky way appears to be more reddish towards the center and more bluish towards the outer rims.

To make a long story short, here are some pics for your viewing pleasure (click for larger view):

It's great to see people actually experimenting with this as it's the only way to learn how Reshade works and what everything does. :) I do realise that my config is very dark. I have made some incremental changes to make space a tad bit brighter. :)
And in the upcoming update I'm using default values for galaxy and planet textures as it's quite taxing on both the engine and the pc.

Textures are only really taxing on the VRAM. 3GB in my case is borderline okay for 4k textures, but people with less VRAM could encounter a problem or two.

I don't know how much management you want in the project, but maybe it would be possible to offer both, a 2k texture variant and a 4k variant. Maybe even all 2k textures, all 4k, just planets 4k, just galaxy 4k.

Well I've been experiencing glitches with the engine as textures are increased. But it also increases loading times and transition times, at least for me.

And no, I don't want to put more than it is needed into this as it's not really a "project".
Trust me, I've been around for some time posting various graphic presets for a few games and it can be very tiresome trying to please everyone, especially the smarty-pants.

Hmm. I tried this, looked great, but I found severe problems with the client.

Attempting to jump to another system caused the whole thing to slow down to crawl, then caused the main game window to become black, then transparent (I could see the desktop). Sound continued to play (as if I were still in transit to the other system). I've no idea what caused these issues...

All I do know is that I didn't have such issues before.

You probably ran out of VRAM. Insomnia has tweaked planet and galaxy texture sizes to higher resolutions so they look better, but some graphics cards can't handle this increased texture size very well. Upcoming versions of his graphics suite will have these texture sizes reduced to normal levels.

Sounds like it might be it. My card has decent processing power, but only 2GBs of VRAM, which is low by todays standards.
