Summary of the Q&A with David Braben

Thanks!

Big thanks to Mr. Braben and Ed Lewis for taking the time to do the QA and to the OP for putting together the list! Especially happy that two of my three questions were answered. :) Although DB referred to the forums for a more specific answer to the orbital cruise to planet surface instantiation question:

  • How will the instancing/loading of a planet's orbit and its surface work? Is orbital cruise an instanced area, similar to super cruise? Is there another separate instancing step from orbital cruise down to POIs on ground level, like signal sources in super cruise? As an example: is a player in orbital cruise in the same instance as a player in a SRV within a POI on the ground and can the first player's ship approach the other player's SRV and POI on the ground seemlessly?

I don't like to nag, but could we get a detailed answer from a dev to that question? ;)

What I gathered from DB's answer is, that yes, orbital cruise seems to be instanced, similarily to supercruise and that actual movement on the ground level around POIs also seems to be instanced in some way. I'd particularily like to know how the latter works. For example, to access a POI that our ship's scanner picked up, do we have to approach from the outer orbit and then drop into the POI, just like we do with signal sources and stations in supercruise?

Just a heads up that David was carried away in the moment on the steam and said the extra CQC maps would make it in to 1.5, in fact we have them planned for release during Season 2, apologies - he has been suitable chastised!.

Haha I bet he has :D I did wonder as I could hear the hesitation in his voice. I'll edit the OP (I think you already did it :p)

That means his bobble head now has to sit on the nose of the ships to be used as a bumper :)

What changed about trading? Now that we know the keelback is no trader, it's official, not a single new trading ship since release l. Not one.

You should look up Q Ships, they ARE cargo vessels, they just happen to be armed cargo vessels, so that's 2 cargo vessels total in the 1.5 update, since the Panther Clipper is another cargo vessel, a very large one that we've gotten no real information on so far, much like the Imperial Cutter.

The Panther isn't in 1.5.

I do not lose sleep, as if in another direction divert resources :)

I wish they could have shown the new ships a little bit more. Such as a size comparison with the anaconda and the federal corvette.

although the fact they made such a big deal last week about the size of the cab and how much visibility you have does make me wonder.
Agree.

But if answer is NO, atleast we can just land and then use ship debug cam to get good surface shots.

I take it premium beta is required for 1.5 next week? With the Horizons beta preorder I only get access to 2.0's beta correct?
