Weapons are getting a major overhaul with the new loot system!

Wonder if this means they'll have to be scaled accordingly for weapons looted from military outposts that are beyond the grades available to purchase. Hmm...

RNG? :S:S :S:S < covers the 8 chars I think..

Random number generator/random number god.

Basically, you can have two of the same weapon with a wider range of stats. It basically means you have to be extremely lucky to have a good weapon, unless you specifically purchase a good one.

If you are referring to excrement from a steer, I wholeheartedly agree. There is already enough of it in BB and finding rarer discounted weapons/modules before hitting elite.

If this turns into raiding the same moonbase for the 1000th time Destiny-like grinding I am off the play something else. We've already seen the types of time they expect their players to invest with the major faction ranking nerf...

I bought destiny when it first came out. I dropped it as it dawned on me just how stupid the whole thing is.
If FD pull that crap out of the hat I won't hang around either

Nah, Elite doesn't have that feel to me, it'll be about sourcing the right materials, which of course has some RNG, everything does from finding a pirate in a RES to getting an asteroid with Pd in it, to a good source of trade commodities. In ED, unlike Destiny, you are given information about where to go to have high likelihood of getting that stuff (pristine/metallic rings, RES sites, different economies). Destiny, et. al. is just totally random, outside of some activities having a higher chance of getting something though not specifically anything.

I'm totally talking out of the behind part of myself in all of this because we really don't know, but I expect the overhaul will be to make the different weapon types amenable to a customizable template. As they are now they have heavy restrictions, to the point that some weapons don't exist in high classes (rails and MCs), so in order to enable players to craft any weapon in any way (or a lot of them in a lot of ways) the system needs a major overhaul as to how they scale and perform, especially graded between tiers (give up a little damage to get a lower power draw on your C3 beams and the like).

I am pretty sure part of the overhaul includes a reintroduction of the weapon variants, like overcharged, low heat, and so forth. I believe they mentioned that as the reason they weren't bringing them back to the main game when they were used in CQC. Though that was a while ago, I can't remember the specifics. This is also speculation, but from the way they have been talking about the various materials you can find for crafting and stuff, I am guessing the crafting system will be similar to that in Dragon Age Inquisition. As in there are generic recipes for items that take x amount of metal, x amount of other things, and the specific kind of metal gives a bonus to certain stats. Another way I could see them doing it is like Borderlands 2, except letting us choose each component, instead of having them randomly put together. I expect there will be a degree of rng, but the crafting system will mean you can build the exact variant you want, rather than relying on luck to spawn the best one.

Honestly, I am pretty excited for this, but I do have my reservations. The potential to overhaul and fix many of the issues with the combat meta right now is certainly intriguing, and the greater module variety means outfitting will be a lot more complex and interesting. The reservations I have deal with them mentioning that some resources for crafting will only be acquirable planetside. Depending on how things work out, that might not really be such a big deal, and presumably someone with Horizons could dump cargo for someone without to pick up planetside only resources, but the potential for a power difference in Horizons/non-Horizons players to emerge is there. If the best variant of some module relies on a planetside only resource, there will certainly be an uproar, and an entirely valid one at that. Also, depending on the balance between how much crafting materials impacts bonuses, there is a very good possibility for crafting to either be pointless, or necessary for each and every component to guarantee the ship runs like you want. In the case crafting being overly necessary, I could see either stock modules not benefiting from the crafted boosts, or the degree of variation making it nigh impossible to get what you want without crafting.

I will be eagerly awaiting more details on how this whole thing is going to work. Only so much speculation and vague statements from the devs can do.

Please, what is the new loot system?

We don't know, just that there is one. We don't know how it works, or what we can make, or anything other than that you can gather materials from space, planets, other ships and somehow craft them (preferably done at a station) to modify weapons and equipment (changing laser colors and attributes was mentioned, like a green laser might generate less heat but do less damage).

I know that they will use the right method as always but usually regarding ships/weapons they often use a 2 handed hammer for balancing, hope that this time they will listen to the community because this is the only feature where i'm not totally satisfied, everything else is an incredible success.
