Targeting sub-modules ... what's the point ?

Okay, so I'm taking down this Anaconda and get Shield Generator, Power Plant, Life Support and Power Distributor all down to 0% ...

The hull was still on about 17%, so I thought, with so much "essential" internal modules offline, I'd wait to see how long before the ship exploded.

After about 5 mins (both of us just floating there doing nothing), I gave up and shot the hull down to 0% and the ship explodes.

So, my question is, why bother targeting modules at all (apart from maybe FSD and Cargo Hatch for pirating) if it makes no difference ? The hull *still* needs to get to 0%.

I understand that bringing a *single* module to 0% shouldn't cause ship destruction (i.e. the PP to 0% == destruction, as was the case), but surely *3* critical modules at 0% should cause some major internal chain reaction.

Target the power plant and continue to shoot it at 0%, ship will go boom after not too long. It's still faster than depleting the hull all the way down to 0%.

I'm still a novice with combat. but you destroyed the power plant, I'm thinking if your destroyed the power distributor that would then cause over heating and then explode. But as I said I'm still a novice in combat rank.

PP 0% = destruction is no longer the case after 1.4, did you not read patch notes?

So why target sub-modules? That depends on what you what do with ship afterwards.

It may not explode.. but having your PP taken out is no fun.

and i rather take on a condas PP than the hull. That last 10% takes ages. Might as well make sure he stops shooting.

Yup, I know that, which is why I went for more modules.

*Surely* at some point there should be too much "internal" damage and the ship should explode ?

If te life support was A graded, in theory, you might have needed to wait like 25mins for it to pop. But it should pop once that life support depletes.

That's not quite the case, each hit on a 0% PP still has an chance for detonation.

So I might try taking out the life support next time too ... :D

I guess this all leads to my next question ...

If I take a Sidewinder out and gradually turn off the modules, does the ship eventually explode ?

Might have to do some testing when beta is out later this week

You don't need to. It turns out NPCs are rubbish at power management. With the Powerplant at 0% it now produces 50% power. NPCs have all modules set to priority 1, so now all modules are without power.

What's helpful about this (apart from the fact that they stop shooting) is that they are now completely immobile, which is ideal for pirating/getting the cargo out.

But then, after a number of minutes (depending on life support) they just go 'boom'. I have experienced this first hand.

see you out there,
Commander Benderson

It's not impossible. I used to bullseye womp rats in my T-16 back home, they're not much bigger than two meters.

No he could of added that he did it blind folded with a helmet on and a light sabre thingy in his hands:D

If the ship doesn't blow at 0% power plant, just continue to shoot it. Each hit on the PP is a fresh 'roll of the dice' as to whether the ship blows or not. It's still quicker than going for the hull alone, especially if you have a weapon that fires repeatedly (pulse lasers I'm looking at you).

Not to mention that a ship with wrecked FSD ain't goint nowhere, so that Conda you are trying to take apart won't highwake away.
