Is this a rip off? Or is this Frontier first encounters all over again?

I want more info too but I'm not a backer and don't even get the newsletter.

The newsletter is publicly available via the updates section of the forums and of course all the video updates are public too. For non-backers I think that's pretty reasonable (and of course is done by Frontier to encourage more backers).

Yeah thx I know I read the newsletter archive, but I would still feel somewhat facetious asking for more newsletter updates and acting all outraged and stuff. Besides, you have to pick your battles ;)

EDIT: I just wanted to add this here from the october article about Elite Dangerous. I think it brings this thread to a nice close :p

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/10/18/alpha-papa-chat-elite-dangerous-alpha-in-december
RPS: Was the alpha access always scheduled for a year after the Kickstarter? What’s the projected timeline for the beta and release date?

Braben: Yes. It was always scheduled for December 2013. Thereafter we will take an ‘it’s ready when it’s ready’ approach. As we’ve seen with the DDF input, it’s incredibly valuable to get feedback from players, and we are trying to take full advantage of the opportunity we have here to get the best possible end result, so we want to have the flexibility to react to feedback for the overall good of the game.

Dear Frontier,

I'd like to have a better understanding of when this game will be released. I pledged £35 for the game on kickstarter all that time ago and it was said back then that elite dangerous would be released in March 2014.

You are now asking for £75 to play the Alpha / Beta version and on your forum you state:

"As you know the Alpha has several stages to get through and the Beta stages cannot commence until the Alpha is completed. Because of this it is not possible to give you an timeframe. The best thing to do is to keep your eyes here as all the latest information will go right to this place. "

It seems to me like the longer you keep on charging people £75 to play ( people that already pledged £35) then the more money you are making and the more money we are spending. Is this fair, given that you haven't yet indicted when the final version will be available? Is this whole thing a rip off? Will the game ever materialize?

Three words then spring to mind. Frontier First Encounters (oh yes that old chestnut). Many people who backed this may not remember what happened there, but that game never got released on the Amiga, even after it was marketed as being available frontier started taking orders on it, selling it then..... nothing. Many disappointed and messed about customers. Including me.

As an initial backer, that makes me and the rest of the backers key project stakeholders. I understand that project milestone dates slip and I also understand that the game needs to fully tested. I don't find it acceptable that your communication of project progress and future project milestones has been so poor.

At the very least, your project manager should issue Bi-Weekly project updates to all stakeholders. Most importantly, to your paying customers. Even if dates slip which of course they will, that's fine, theres probably a good reason for that. We deserve to know. Even if you don't want to commit to dates, at the very least let us know how many more stages it has to go through (and how many more costs for us there will be along the way).

I appreciate your consideration of my frustration here.

Thank you.

Ok the only thing I can say here is, this game is awesome..
I would gladly wait a year.. For this.. I remember times past.. But heh.. Things were difficult.. Then..

The past is the past.. I don't grudge giving FD ANY OF MY CASH..because frontier even now is worth my £200..
So all I can say is 15 or more years ltr.. It's nothing for you to wait that wee bit more until it goes gamma.. But as this game stands.. Just now.. It is as we say in Scotland Class In A Glass :D

You will love & forgive the past when ur piloting this Baby in full 3D with or without the Rift... Honest it is gonna be the best..

Star citizen is a rip off $25,000 for a ship... & people are paying crazy cash for these ships & walking about their hanger.. In & out their ships.. That are not as nice when in a trailer... & you hear them saying if only I can take it for a spin.. Around the block.... :/

I think the OP has kick starter mistaken for a pre-order system.
With Kickstarter you pay to help the artist/studio realise their vision. You might not get anything for your pledge.
Pre-order: you pay for a known quantity.
If you just wanted to preorder you should not have backed elite on kick starter but wait until its done.

The OP does come across as a bit of an ill-considered rant, rather than a reasoned fair point.

I´m back.

I remember about a year ago I said March 2014 is an unrealistic release date and everyone jumped at me because of it and accused me of "trolling".

Understandably, I don´t spend much time around here.
So, where can I download my launcher? It´s March 2014 and I want to fly around a shiny space station.

I fully understand that my question will be considered as "flame baiting", so I expect to get banned again and won´t be able to reply for the next three to six months, so, hello and good bye until September.

Thanks for reading!

Fetch the buckets!

Seriously though, nice to see you FromHell. You're one of the genuine characters, and almost like a surrogate Toebs for me.

Nice to see you again. :D

Last time it was goodbye till Christmas - this time it's September. Is this an *estimated* return date or can we depend on it this time?

Your fans need to know!

It'll be ready when it's properly baked.

Releasing a half-baked game never goes well in the longer term even if people get "jam today."
