News Horizons Beta progress

I'll hazard another guess that SC -> orbital cruise -> landing mode transitions don't work. Would explain why there has been no sneak peek of that. :)

But better don´t send them hot Jalapeno ones ... I guess, devs waiting in a long queue in order to get to the toilet, will rather be detrimental to their productivity :D

I thought that they had them plumbed into the office seating, so as to maximise the time they could work on this magnificent game!

That looks really nice, minus the slight texturing issue. Once the SRV had deployed did it remind anyone else of Stunt Car Racer?

great vid in OP and personally I have no issue with a few days delay.

@Pete, I too had the same thought about stunt car racer the very 1st time i saw it. given SCR is one of my top 5 all time faves, this could not be a bad thing.

If I had 1 slight negative thought about it, and it kind of links back to stations in general.....

There could do with being a bit more life imo, stuff which is animated, moving pistons, mining machines going about their business, and also radio chatter coming over the coms etc.

That being said, the core of horizons, like the core of the main game looks great imo.

Yeah the office will end up smelling like a packet of dry roasted peanuts by the end of the week. :p

At this point I'm more of the opinion that this is something they want us to experience for ourselves instead of it being something we watch in a video.

Don't get me wrong...if they published a video I would watch it in a heartbeat, but I much rather experience it myself the first time. :)

I haven't had time to read threads on this yet, so I don't know if this has been mentioned any where else yet. But: why haven't we seen a video from space to planet surface yet? I'd like to see a seamless (or "seamless") transition from super-cruise to orbital-cruise and flying down and over the planet surface before the landing itself happens. Are there problems with the seamless transition? And is this why we haven't seen any videos of this yet? considering the Horizons release is so imminent.

[edit] oops, got ninja'd by post above.

Yeah, Got to agree with that, As much as I love the sneak peeks I do want that experience to be very new and shiny.

Such is my pessimism and craving for spoilers, I'll take a step back and wholeheartedly agree that it would be nice to experience this without a preview. :)

Awesome video, thanks.

Yes, please take your time. I understand it's somehow endemic to game development, but save crunch time for promised final release dates, not beta. Beta is not worth crunching for.

Comments on video:
1) Ambient lighting could be lower. Without atmospheric scattering, the only ambient light is bounce lighting from the planet surface and other structures. So it should be very low. Moons should feel cold and dark anyway. :)
2) Could the scanner sweep be faster, e.g. 2-3x? If you're driving full throttle searching for something, it seems you could almost drive past it completely between two sweeps of the scanner. I still have no idea what it does, but I assume it'll be useful somehow.

And the transition to the surface probably won't be completley seamless. The rendering engine supports it, but the networking doesn't. Surfaces are confirmed as separate instances, so there will have to be some sort of transition, I think.

David,

question for the Beta, we currently have the 1.5 beta and Horizons Beta is coming soon, will they be combined for those that have access to both? or will they remain separate betas?

Cheers, and keep up the good work, release it when it is ready!

Take your time, this as a massive milestone that will change the game completely I am eally excited to play it but the amount of issues and bugs when adding this much complexity is totally understandable!

Maybe a nice computer boot up sequence in the SRV whilst the instance is loading, that sorta thing would be cool and make it a bit more seemless

OMG, cant wait to deploy my SRV from my ASP on some barren planet far out in the galaxy and drive around / exploring. :)

Really hope that planetary landings will be an important part of exploring.

Is falling capped at our ships max speed? How high can we go before we have to enter orbital cruise? How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?

Some people over on Reddit described the issue better than I could, so I'll just copy/paste what they said:
Looks good but the video makes it clear that these installations badly need NPCs in vehicles and walking around in space suits going about their daily business. This video left with a sensation of being incredibly lonely.

The only stations that should be this barren and devoid of people are abandoned ones.
Even some animated structures like cranes, cool moving dishes, or at least animated cargo arms and assembly lines would go a long way. It's still feels a lot like a techdemo.

I know that some of the above would be difficult, but those are just ideas to explain the kind of thing that needs adding. Basically something to add life to what currently FEELS like an abandoned station whose lights have been left on.

I don't disagree that having things moving around on the surface will make the experience far more immersive, but lets get the main bits working properly before fine tuning the little bits.

To jump out of the SRV, force open a damaged door and walk inside to find evidence of a fire fight, then open the landing control room door to find it empty... All that remains is a half eaten doughnut, a cold cup of coffee on the desk and some strange goo stuck to the chair and some walls. Where is everyone and what could have melted these holes in the floor plating? The sound of the distress beacon control panel disturbs my thought process, I better call this in... think I am going to need backup...
