News Horizons Beta Delay to Monday 30th November

It has already been taken, prior to 1.5.

1.5 Beta and 2.0 Beta will be playing in the same worlds - though we want to encourage 2.0 people to restart (don't worry - it won't affect your main game save), as we have a new on-the-surface start position.

(Oops - I think I just made an announcement...! :) )

When the flag drops, do we get to run across the track and jump into the SRVs?

Hi David, thanks for the update. :)

If you are still about could I ask you about how the single light source rendering in game will affect us on planets? For example if the main star / light source is on the opposite side of the planet, whilst a smaller secondary star is up in the sky - will we find ourselves in darkness despite the star being there?

Given the fact that Horizons has to be released on Xmas as otherwise their investors will get very uneasy, this leaves them with a beta period of only 2 weeks.
.

You grossly overestimate the influence of Frontier's investors (or the investors who are not insiders, at least).

The only FDEV investor who truly matters is David Braben himself, who owns more than 50% of the shares (a controlling interest). Frontier insiders own something like 60-65% of the company. So the majority of investors are going to care more about getting out a good product that will give sustained returns even if it means missing an arbitrary release date. Investors who are not FDEV investors knew what they were getting into when they bought their shares, otherwise they were bloody idiots.

Hi David,

How feasible is it to provide a secondary account that can only be used within the beta?

I think this would help people test a greater variety of elements:
  • More people will test the start from a "clean" account, which should help you to uncover and fix any issues surrounding starting on the surface sooner.
  • People will still be able to test game elements that take a long time to unlock, due to the amount of credits; rank or influence required to access them.

For example:
  • I really want to test out the fresh start in the Sidewinder on the surface, and go through the initial challenges again, testing out the lower level missions.
  • I would also like to test out landing on planets and ground star ports in Anacondas, Cutters, etc. and any other new modules.
  • If available, I would also like to test out combinations of SRV's and loadouts, which might take some time to work up to from a clean save.

Also, after seeing some of the criticism expressed during previous beta tests I fully understand your decision to delay the general beta release.

However, in my experience more testing time is always beneficial for uncovering other defects that could be totally unreleated to the current blocking issues. Personally, I am more than happy to provide more "alpha level" testing for you.

Oh, and almost forgot:

Thank you for making the Elite games. They really are fantastic works of art; technically ground-breaking; and thoroughly entertaining. I think they deserve their place as some of the best games of all time!

The delay makes sense, I felt it was pretty close to the 1.5 Beta anyway. One foot in front of the other after all, eh? :D

merging normal space and supercruise would be a huge change to the game that was never on the table.

Its not as big a deal as you are making out. Sandy already confirmed on a live stream that the transitions that exist in the game exist solely for the purpose of switching between networking instances and that over time this could be improved and/or hidden better.

If the game had a true offline mode it would be totally seamless.

Look, people, we all knew this release was going to be a little buggy.

That's the understatement of the year! A "little", ha ha ha!

I've been participating in all the betas so far. For the 2.0 beta to be pushed by several days, with no firm assurance that it will be released on the 30th, then there must be real serious problems. The other betas had significant issues that didn't prevent Frontier from releasing them. So, be patient, people.

It's all good. I have a flu, and I can't fly in my condition anyway (especially not with VR) :(.

For the amateur planetary geologists in the crowd, can you clarify if there is a way to determine the composition of the surface, other than visually? I know from the dev videos that there are specific rocks (ie feldspar, etc).

Also, is the plan still to release 1.5 and 2.0 together (not the beta, but the production release)?

Hey David was wondering if we could see some footage of the transition from space to surface and vice versa. im very interested in seeing that.
