Death should = Credits only

I understand how you feel as not as dangerous as it was in BBC version. Sounds like you need to read up on Hard core rules (Optional).

I was just thinking - if you always ignored insurance and just took the free sidewinder, well, that would be a pretty significant hit. Even for those who have built up a lot of ships, any given ship once upgraded is worth a hell of a lot more than stock.

So you could always just take the Freewinder option. Bonus is that it doesn't count as an insurance claim on your permanent record ;)

This. That is a horrible idea.
Actually no, the idea itself isn't horrible, the horrible part is people that would grief because of it.
Just to get the fact straight, idea would be fine if people didn't abuse it.

That said, idea is good in my book, won't work as that but good.
Personally I could see something more related to vouchers and such, and maybe creating an additional station service, where you could go to get your ship back, these should be very common but not everywhere, say only large stations would be able to have them? you die you pay your fees and are put into a loaner ship that vanishes upon claiming said voucher?
A sidewinder similar to this: http://coriolis.io/outfit/sidewinder/02D2D2A1D1D1D1C----3uf22m.Iw19A===.Aw19A===

then you'd need to go to a station, you know, that actually would realistically be able to supply you with what you lost, and then you'd get your stuff back, wouldn't need to get each part, but you'd just need to go somewhere to get it back, Making death hurt a bit more.

I really like this idea. All these nouveau 'Conda drivers losing their fancy prats as they strut around like princesses in the black, only to be blown asunder by a skilled scrapper. Serves them right! Perhaps then they'll realize the error of their ways and start to play for fun and adventure instead of a mindlessly peaceful credit grind.

Oh, and when the change is implemented, make the game Open only, please.

There's a lot more ships in this game than flashy 'Condas and beefy Pythons. The little guys are a lot of fun, too.

Nah, I think the death penalty is one of the best designed that I've seen. It's as harsh or light as you want it to be.

You're essentially trying to make billionaires incapable of doing whatever they like with their huge bank balance. Because you don't like how pvp has lower risk for them.

No dice.

So you're absolutely, 100% sure that only your idea of fun is an ultimate fun for all, right?

And all those people in expensive ships play to torture themselves?

I like to point out something. I been playing Ironman mode. It easy to get back into a Python. Only took me a few days.

May have been suggested but tl;dr

IMO:
Like GTA V, the killer should pay for my vehicle as long as I paid an up-front price to insure it. Possibly tweaked such that if they shoot first but I kill them, they're stuck with the re-buy of their own ship.

Problem with OP's suggestion is it doesn't help newbies who have no CRs to begin with (1000 CR = nothing).

Nah--see, most of them don't play. They get their big ships and off they go--they beat the game! Nothing more to do! But you see, that's so far from the truth. This game has far more to offer than a silly credit grind.

Death is only inconsequential when your flying a cheap ship. When your t9 or anaconda with a 7m insurance cost and 3 mil worth of cargo gets blown up it stings - that's many hours of trading gone. That's enough penalty infact it's too much IMO in a practically defenceless ship like a t9 (stopping people trading in open)

What the game needs is to implement the cargo insurance not harsher penalties.

Truth. Games have conditioned us to think of terms of the endgame as getting the best...whatever. Ship, gun, armor, what have you. Or getting the highest +Whatever modifier to your weapon or skillset.

Yes, it's fun to munchkin around with things and try to min-max the crap out of your character/ship/gear, but if you can get past that and think more about the game itself, there's a lot more fun to be had.

Imagine the conversation with the insurance broker:

"Yeah, can you please stop flying shieldless eagles into ships when they're trying to dock, it will affect your no claims bonus."

or

"Sorry, your policy excludes damage caused in a Hazardous Resource Extraction Zone"

Let's go a step further: Death = the game automatically uninstalls itself.

Let's do it. Elite: Dangerous Roguelike Edition.

The posts I'm seeing lately about there not being enough restrictions and wanting to lose everything on "death" has me confused. Sounds like you guys want a completely different game.

Here's your risk: https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=107694

Roll the dice! Play your way! Leave the coding it into the game part out! Thanks! !!!

They can't put perma-death into this game. It's just not going to happen. Something that could happen though:

You die, your ship becomes unavailable to use for 1 hour. Die again within 24 hours, it goes to 6 hour downtime. Then again goes to 24 hours, 1 week etc. So basically you can't spam die in your ships, and after your ship is destroyed you can't fly it again instantly.
This might be interesting, and would incentivize having multiple ships. Right now you have incentive to just sell your old ships for money to buy better ships with.

Also, even more important than dying not mattering, BEING WANTED DOESN'T MATTER. Why can hop into a sidewinder for 30 seconds to clear my name?

I would actually like that downtime idea, but nobody will go for it. Especially because of PvPers who WANT to get back into the fight and don't mind dying a dozen times in less than an hour.

Those ideas are truly exceptional. Exactly what Elite should be about.

FD please take note of this package of *coherent* game mechanics.

1. Killing civilians with no bounty means you must pay *their* insurance.

2. Killing CMDRs who have no bounty racks up charges of murder. Once a set level is reached: overall bounty value accrued and/or number of harmless&mostly harmless civilians killed and/or number killed 2/3 combat levels below aggressor's combat rating, then expulsion from Pilots Federation results.

3. On expulsion can join a shadow league with it's own insurance package which is more expensive due to it being administered by corrupt criminals-at-heart.

Mechanics like this would add a lot of spice to the galaxy Lore and a bit more balance to Open gameplay.

Cheerz
