Actually no, the idea itself isn't horrible, the horrible part is people that would grief because of it.This. That is a horrible idea.
I really like this idea. All these nouveau 'Conda drivers losing their fancy prats as they strut around like princesses in the black, only to be blown asunder by a skilled scrapper. Serves them right! Perhaps then they'll realize the error of their ways and start to play for fun and adventure instead of a mindlessly peaceful credit grind.
Oh, and when the change is implemented, make the game Open only, please.
There's a lot more ships in this game than flashy 'Condas and beefy Pythons. The little guys are a lot of fun, too.
So you're absolutely, 100% sure that only your idea of fun is an ultimate fun for all, right?
And all those people in expensive ships play to torture themselves?
Nah--see, most of them don't play. They get their big ships and off they go--they beat the game! Nothing more to do! But you see, that's so far from the truth. This game has far more to offer than a silly credit grind.
Let's go a step further: Death = the game automatically uninstalls itself.
They can't put perma-death into this game. It's just not going to happen. Something that could happen though:
You die, your ship becomes unavailable to use for 1 hour. Die again within 24 hours, it goes to 6 hour downtime. Then again goes to 24 hours, 1 week etc. So basically you can't spam die in your ships, and after your ship is destroyed you can't fly it again instantly.
This might be interesting, and would incentivize having multiple ships. Right now you have incentive to just sell your old ships for money to buy better ships with.
Also, even more important than dying not mattering, BEING WANTED DOESN'T MATTER. Why can hop into a sidewinder for 30 seconds to clear my name?

FD please take note of this package of *coherent* game mechanics.
1. Killing civilians with no bounty means you must pay *their* insurance.
2. Killing CMDRs who have no bounty racks up charges of murder. Once a set level is reached: overall bounty value accrued and/or number of harmless&mostly harmless civilians killed and/or number killed 2/3 combat levels below aggressor's combat rating, then expulsion from Pilots Federation results.
3. On expulsion can join a shadow league with it's own insurance package which is more expensive due to it being administered by corrupt criminals-at-heart.
Mechanics like this would add a lot of spice to the galaxy Lore and a bit more balance to Open gameplay.
