News Horizons Beta Delay to Monday 30th November

I'm not sure it takes any pressure off. As a developer myself, when I miss my deadline, I feel even more pressure!

USually that means no holidays and no weekends....

After all, being without a producer gives you the advantage to release whenever you want; there is no hurry in the end. Is not like someone break the contract and people get fired, if the milestone is missed.

It's funny that Space Engineers got planets added to the game before ED did it, and they didn't try to sell it as a new game.

The planets in space engineers are ridiculously cartoonish though. They even make NMS seem realistic by comparison.

To me they look like this:

You're not being silly. But. The purpose of a beta is not solely to find bugs, however you define 'bug'.
All software, irrespective at what stage they are at in development, maintenance etc. have bugs. So saying 'beta' software is synonymous with software having bugs is saying all software is in beta whether open beta or closed beta.

And let's not forget that after finding a bug it does not necessarily mean the bug will be 'fixed'. :)

One thing of note though. I agree with you that FD has achieved the nice feat of getting people to pay for the 'privilege' of being beta testers by waving the carrot of early access under their flaring nostrils.
Some people just can't wait!:p

Nowadays the definitions are out of the window....it is out when it is out; when it is out is incomplete; when it is incomplete you sell DLC which were part of the game; and when you release a new version of the game you call it season....welcome to the 21st century in game development :)

The reason behind not releasing something that crash every 5 minutes, is that it is a waste of time. In sw development, unless a build is stable and has no showstoppers; you don't send it to QA. We are Frontier QA after all, so what's the point in sending out a broken build?

Beta is nothing more than "early start"; weeks before; for which , as you noticed, you have to pay. Not only you help with QA work (which is not free, mind you...people actually call it "job" :D ), but you will also help financially when you buy the beta access; so it is an "everybody win" kinda of scenario.

Plus, one thing that those little games for portable devices, with pay walls taught us, is that you can always leverage on people being in perennial need to have everything "now now now", that you just need to put a sticker and someone will pay to get there faster or with more resurces or whatever :)

Is not that they are cartoonish (at most they look like supermario LOL); it is a matter of size.

Mountains and everything else is exaggerated because it has to look good when you are on the planet; but from space; at a certain distance; you can see the whole planet and its features, and it won't look as good.
Also I believe that voxel terrain is different from the terrain generated in ED: this terrain is not modifiable nor it react to the player; to me it look like a heightmap applied on a surface; which means that the overall poly surface is a single mesh. I may be wrong thou; I can't read code just watching a video.

From far, they look just fine; it is that weird range when you approach and the features get oversized...most likely they will fix it with time.

Remember that you never went trough that process with ED....here you see the nicely cooked product, not the gritty pre-pre-alpha ;) You can download the source code for SE if you want; they had planet implementation since months ago but it was a pain to make it work. Even now, you can change the game code if you like so...the whole experience is quite entertaining if you are a programmer.

I really hope your NOT someone from Frontier or any of the Developers, telling someone "your over-entitlement is showing" How dare you say that to a customer (joke or not).

I personally expect a beta to have faults, that's why we bought into it, to help.... Not to keep getting shoved back.

Yes it's ALL great and yes we WILL all wait until it is released, BUT, you need to recognise that even with all the best will in the world, it has not been handled very business like (as far as charging and dates etc go).

But I am STILL massively looking forward to it "whenever we get it" and I do appreciate ALL the hard work that's gone into all of Elite Dangerous. But equally, people do need to stop praising the devs for delaying it and realise that's wrong as well.

As I said in an earlier post (which was removed):
I'm a business person and I would NOT get away with advertising a product with a date and charging for that product, then NOT delivering it. But that's maybe just my point of view. Frontier or whoever, could have done more to announce the delay, like putting it on their store nice and clear or even better, on the Launcher.

Also, as a business person, I do realise that things don't always go to plan, especially as we employ human-beings and one thing they're great at, is making mistakes (being polite here!!). The problem or issue isn't the actual problem, it's how you deal with it, that can make you stand out better than other companies. Even a very bad situation can be turned round, especially when you have such a dedicated fan base like the community here. Just don't take them for granted, because what you have with your fans is special and they will tolerate it, but there's still a limit. They should never feel like they've been taken for granted, just like the Devs should never think "Ah, we'll just put it back another few days, they'll not mind" and think it's ok.

It always brings a smile to my face when I see a post like this saying that they are a 'business person'. As if that is some kind of 'badge' to grant them credibility or authority in whatever they espouse. It doesn't take a 'business person' to realise things don't always go to plan:rolleyes:.
And 'you' business persons employ human-beings? Yeah, so you lot keep saying. As you lot keep on pointing out us human-beings are great at making mistakes.
And what business are you in? Not software development I'd wager.
You did say you would not get away with ADVERTISING a product didn't you?
Says it all really. Have you ever a made, created or manufactured a product? With your own brains and hands?
Don't take me seriously, I'm a software engineer; what do I know about business?

Although we have to wait that little longer, I am more than happy to do just that.
Too many Triple A game titles get rushed for deadlines and end up needing patches & bug fixes before you've had a chance to even play.
Someone mentioned it's Beta and should let us get our hands on it to test is just a bit silly. If the company feel their product isn't upto their own standard, they have every right to hold back. Also, the fact that it IS in beta also usually comes with the T&C stating that a beta release maybe buggy and/OR delayed due to it being under development. So although Beta games are almost mainstream now and some companies just use it as an excuse to start raking in the cash for an unfinished product, FD have the balls to say "Hold on people, we want it to work properly and look good" rather than bash something out hastily that might look a bit scrappy.
Hell, a game of this scale isn't something you can exactly say "Oh hurry up will ya!"

It reminds me of the map size comparison arguments between the like of Far Cry V's GTA or H1Z1 V's DayZ, etc. People comparing Km/2... Well, FD's map is a Galaxy, that's going to take some work & time to get right.

You forgot to point out to this "Business guy" that it isn't uncommon for delays. Got to say though. I am actually dev over at Bohemia Interactive and I was wondering when the hate comments would start flying XD. I'm sorry, but he's the over entitled one here XD

It has already been taken, prior to 1.5.

1.5 Beta and 2.0 Beta will be playing in the same worlds - though we want to encourage 2.0 people to restart (don't worry - it won't affect your main game save), as we have a new on-the-surface start position.

(Oops - I think I just made an announcement...! :) )

Does this mean when horizons is out we have to start all over again? oh please no.

Monday huh? well, I left a baby at home with a pit bull and a kerosene heater and I'm not going back until Horizons beta launches...so FD, The fate of that poor heater is in your hands.

Sad to hear about the delay, but welp. Not everything can run smoothly all the time, [redacted] happens and all that. Just don't overstress yourselves to get this out of the door sooner, I'd prefer waiting a few extra days instead of your devs getting closer to Burn-Out-Syndrom yet again.

Also heh, nice joke about restarting. Even if the new start position is really, really impressive, I'm not starting new until we have multiple save slots, so that's all completely wasted on me. :p

As a Bzzzzzzzzness person you would realise the poster you refer to does not work for frontier and in fact FD have been very open an honest.

Your sensitive, aren't you!! But you are right, "What would you know about business". But "don't take me seriously" it's people like us that give people like you jobs, so, you kinda proved my point..... Thanks.

Plus, you've proved the point about Humans, like many others who haven't read and understood the grammar and context of various posts correctly. I have actually been praising the devs as well.

How would I know who he is? Just because I'm a business person.

P.S This is how you spell Business..... lol :)

P.P.S I've never said that the devs are not honest, I've just said that the delay could have been better announced, like on the launcher.

Wipegate returneth!

Seriously though, no. No way they would do it now, it would ignite the burning of these forums and a seriously upset user base. If you want to see the new beginning bad enough, clear your save, buy another account, or watch it on Twitch/YouTube.

Maaayyyybe, we will get an exra commander slot, who knows?

Whats a few more days. I played the original Elite on it's release day and have been waiting for this since the day Elite became unplayable due to hardware upgrades.
