60mbit connection why does it take 2 min+ to jump

But they're not authoratitave servers that calculate weapon impacts, damage and player position. They're transaction servers that deal with, among other things, bulletin board missions, financial transaction management, and matchmaking to instances.

Wellington is right.

The issue last night was with the matchmaking server, I believe. I was in a wing in a system with three comrades. Our transitions between SC and normal space were taking minutes, and although the wing remained intact, we kept ending up in separate instances in SC. Sometimes we were approaching the same planet and would be dumped into separate instances when we dropped. On onther occasions we would jump to SC at the same time but end up in different instances in cruise.

What has that got to do with the long jump times that we're talking about?

You can see when watching the network traffic there needs to be server communication (a transaction) to finish the jump. He said there were no servers.

Guilty...........but only for another three weeks until our relocation is complete.

It wasn't that for me, there was no one else in my instance.

The data transfer in solo/single user per instance is tiny.

As the game uses P2P, your upload speed is also important. 60mbit download isn't going to help much if the upload is only 512k. Plus if you have one peer whos in some far off land, or has a poor connection, the whole session lags to hell for everyone no matter what.

P2P just isn't good for gaming on, I don't think they will ever fully "fix" the issues.

at least not in the way you are quoting
Seems to me that he is aware of the differences.

Actually, the game uses ridiculously low amounts of bandwidth - in a busy instance, it might use 100kbps upstream. Additionally, 60mbps is either cable or a FTTS connection; ADSL2+ only goes to, iirc, 24mbps down if you have perfect copper and live in the exchange.

Even with a 2mb down / 512k up, it was taking a long time to jump last night... Normally, this is not a problem, so it cannot be related to the speed of the connection.

If you enable the network debug to show data transfer... you'll notice that just before incoming to a new system you receive a very small amount of data about 120~150b/s.
So it can't be an issue with the bandwith of your internet connection.
It's probably more related with some queueing issue on server side... (he'll send you this packet... as soon as it can. :) )

I am writing this post while I jump from one system to another. I've not played the past few days so maybe I just didn't notice it being like this for several days now, but the jump times are horrible. Imagine being a long distance trader/smuggler, how much extra time you'd spend jumping right now. :(

I have a tingly feeling that FD are monkeying around with the servers in preparation for 1.5 live launch.

But that's just me being optimistic.

Some people in here need to realize the bandwidth of their connection has nothing to do with their latency.
There's no difference between 60 Mbit/s and 5 Mbit/s when it comes to latency. And latency is what these issues are all about.

Just chiming in myself. I went through some of the first iterations of this problem. Funny thing is, they affected Solo most of all - changing to a Private Group or Open solved the problem. This time, it's reversed - people going to Solo say it clears up.

It's a US holiday weekend; people watching the games with their superscreen tvs (streaming from the internet); it's Black Friday; it's the pre-Christmas online shopping rush... it's internet borkage. Was trying to browse NewEgg last night and was down to watching it fill in line-by-line just like in the old days. Try Amazon's store or eBay. Everything's bogged.

Which is sad, after 25 years. And the US's craptacular "broadband."

I have 60.4 mbit download and 11.7 mbit upload. On my 60mbit dsl2 connection here. Latency is 8ms to server 400km away
