News From orbit down to Europa

We all know the what the concept is behind "concept art" pardon the pun, but you are obliged to pay some homage to what you put out there. What we saw in the last 2 peeks is falling well short of what was advertised, if you cant see that then obviously you are are happy with what you have got, others are entitled to disagree. if we all said "lovely" every time nothing would ever get improved.

People can point out improvements all they want.

All I questioned was the statement that it was "false advertisement". It's not, it's concept art. "False advertisement" is when someone knows that what they got is not at all what is being advertised. Concept art is something that is made before the "product" is even created in the first place.

To what purpose were those concepts put out there for if not to try and push sales. If you don`t believe that to be the case then I have some sand to sell ya.

All the more reason to be realistic in what you put out so as to manage expectations or do you think is alright to over promise for the sake of sales.

"Hey! We have some awesome concept art our team has cooked up we would like to show you...because it's awesome!........We're not gonna do that though. Instead we are gonna show you the crap the artists threw in the bin instead."

Sometimes creative individuals simply want to show of their work...especially if the public is screaming for it...and most of the time the would prefer to show the good stuff for some weird reason. ;)

But no...your right. They should stop showing us stuff because everything they show is a "promise"...also...everything they do is purely for sake of sales. Since, you know, all companies are EVIL! :D

Are sales and publicity part of the equation. Of course it is, but it's not the whole story.

Relax friend, take 5. I still think they have to be responsible and are obliged to manage expectations otherwise it leaves a sour taste

I still have faith in frontier to sort things but there must be some reasons why they are dragging their heels on not having Ultra specs on the graphic settings and I wish they would be clear on the issues involved.

Of course I'm willing to bet some really nice starport shots are going to be possible with Insomnia's FX kit ;)

I spotted that earlier and I have used Granite`s tips previously but we shouldn`t have to be messing about like that if we have the machines with the power to crank up the settings.

Concept art/advertising
I don't think it is a debate worth having.
People will either be happy with product or they won't - vote with your money.

Personally I think the visuals are really lacking by today's standards, even accounting for the fact there are improvements to come and we are dealing with procedural worlds.
Europa looked great in Supercruise high orbit but the surface looks awful frankly.
Can't comment on the gameplay element of Horizons but I could put up with it being average so long as the worlds were interesting and beautiful to look at - even barren alien worlds should be well detailed and the bases still suffer from that "plonked on" look which was an issue a decade ago with procedural generation but these days those problems have long been solved by other devs.

My expectations are probably too high though - maybe in a few years?

I'm guessing Glide is a loading mode? Otherwise I don't see the point of it - in space you go from SC straight to normal space, what's the point of the Glide interlude if not to load in the local environment?

Depends on how other ships show up in the 'Glide' mode. You are still 'technically' in Supercruise. Do you see fireflies or full ships? Can you interact with them in a firefight? <shrug> Beta is Monday! Popcorn is popped...the mods have fire extinguishers and ban hammers at the ready!

I have no problems agreeing with that. (and I'm perfectly relaxed BTW :))

But that's different from claiming "false advertisement". ;)

Also, in regards to managing expectations I think they have done pretty much everything they can by constantly showing us all these raw videos straight out of the latest builds. How many peeks of this nature have we got and how many pieces of concept art have they released? They could just as easily just have shown off only nice looking screenshots of scripted scenes and a bunch of CGI trailers...like many other games do. Instead they have shown raw footage all over the place.

At the end of the day they can't help that gamers themselves seem to be pretty good a expecting too much all the time just fine on their own.

Have they hit my expectations yet? In some areas they have surpassed what I thought they would deliver with the first expansion (the amount of different activities down on the surface and the big scale planetary features being two examples) in other areas they have fallen a little bit short (in regards to details and variation close to the ground). Overall they are pretty much where I hoped they would be at this point though.

So that sour taste due to expectations is IMO not only in the hands of the devs, it's just as much in the hands of consumers themselves. And this applies to all products, not just ED.

Also, something I agree with...and honestly regret even getting into it. It will never lead anywhere and no "solution" will ever come. Better go to bed now... :D

Look lets agree to disagree we obviously shop at different places and I like bargains and ....sleep.:)

Not 100% seamless, but good enough. Still a shame that the game in effect freezes whilst the instance loads. (Unavoidable I know)

There will be some that will say this breaks the immersion. The silly thing is without instances, it could (probably) be done totally seamlessly.

For me though that is perfectly acceptable. Roll on Monday.

To me it's no less different to when a Starship comes out of Warp in Star Trek. They also seem to have the "stop" effect just as they transition fully back into N-Space.

Exactly, think of it as coming safely out of the supercruise bubble to avoid your ship being torn to shreds because your front end accidentally popped into N-space a microsecond faster than the back end.

Is that ice...LOL. I know what ice looks like here in sweden and its nothing like that in the video.
If you hadn't told me its icy planet I would hve never guessed it was from looking at video

I dunno, Sweden has an atmosphere and a bright close sun. Have you tried removing the air and relocating Sweden to Jupiter? :p

The ice does look a bit yellow to me though...Mom always said I should be wary of yellow snow. ;)

So they should not show the concept art then? While people at the same time scream for things to see...because at the time that was released people were indeed screaming for something.

They should show whatever has been approved by a PR team. People scream all the time about anything and everything. FD need to make the right choice about what goes out in spite of that.

You will be taken out of orbital cruise to normal speed just like you get out of SC when you fly straight into a planet = you won't crash at hyper speed on the surface.

Only watched the video once, but I'm pretty sure the Eagle left orbital cruise and continued at 2500 m/s for several seconds before going back to normal speed. So depending on the altitude, crashing into a planet by flying straight into it from orbital cruise could be possible.

Which is awesome!

This is my biggest issue and fear regarding Horizons. The Vulture on chicken legs, now the Imperial Eagle, it looks so brittle, silly and ugly. If at least the ships would only raise on command, to allow the SRV to enter and exit, and not remain like that all the time. I mean, surely the ships must be able to switch between normal and chicken leg mode, because some ships might have trouble fitting in the hangars otherwise. I am still fearful whether my FDL will have the syndrome, too, or whether it has enough clearance between cargo hatch and ground... this stylish ship must not stand on stilts...

OMG, it didnt look like chicken legs. Get yourself some new glasses man. It looks awesome. The FDL will look amazing when landed. What Frontier has accomplished here is a beautiful creation of a galaxy which will get better and better with time. How can you say the imperial eagle look silly, brittle and ugly. You are a .... behave yourself. Thx :)

Idk, when I saw the Vulture/Viper my first thought was "chicken legs". It's not a deal breaker, but it definitely looks odd compared to the normal view in a station.
