It would be true if they were hand crafting the stations and surface bases but they write some code, model some assets and they are generated automatically. This is a godsend for a studio FD's size.
They get so much flak for doing something where all the other studios have and still do chicken out by either making the galaxy limited but handcrafted, planets filled to the brim with stuff but miniature sizes... You can suggest any game in the genre with some feature better than ED, and I'll point out exactly what they sacrificed to have that in game instead of doing what they really want like FD does with ED.
Just be honest. ED can either have trillions of 1:1 planets with somewhat automated features and repeating station models or a bunch of fluffed up, small ones that will look a million times more interesting but offer limited gameplay in the long run. This is a compromise FD had to make and many are glad they did.
Why do you assume other companies are sacrificing anything? It's not a sacrifice to make a smaller sandbox with more interesting things to do over a larger empty sandbox. It's just a design decision. I play other space games with smaller sandboxes then ED yet I've been playing them longer then ED and I'm still not bored of them. I don't see any sacrifice in those games. Gameplay is what keeps me playing certain games not how big the playing area is. It will be interesting to see how things play out when Star Citizen releases. Smaller sandbox to play in at launch but more to do. Again just a design decision. We will have the enjoyment of seeing which plan turns out to be better. I backed both games and hope they push each other so we the customer reap the benefits. The SC 2.0 vids look awesome by the way, and I don't see any complaints about the graphic quality. They are also being streamed on YouTube. Just saying! Cheers!
