What is this??

Its just a starport orbitting...... nothing....

Ive seen planets doing that while exploring, but never a starport..

Many planets seem to orbit nothing, because, maybe, they are part of twin planets (gravity interaction can have its center in a point inside the concentric orbit), or gravitational drag and tidal forces with other planets.
But this was a station at over 10,000 Ls from the sun. Away (far away) from any planet (as you can see in the radar).
This can't happen with a station, as its mass it's too low in relation to any celestial body.
So it should be orbiting the sun. Or be moved in a planet orbit.

I think that this needs a fix, doesn't it?

Dark matter. It's a thing. We can't see it. It has the same gravity as regular matter though. It could just be regular matter in a dimension that we can't detect yet. Yet.

have you gone to the center of the orbit to see if there is anything there? maybe a small black hole? or something more mysterious? check the bulletin board at the station for anything out of the ordinary? what you think might be a bug, has the potential to be intentionally put there by the devs...

No, didn't want to risk the ship and the exploration data. I didn't check the bulletin board. But approaching the station, nothing seemed unusual, just as if the planet was simply missing, though.

Possibly in a Lissajous orbit:-

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lissajous_orbit

Gravity is weird, and it is indeed possible to orbit a bit of nothing, as long as that bit of nothing happens to be a Lagrange point.

Plausible. But seems a bit far away from the nearest planet, for a Lagrange point.
Anyway are Lagrange points implemented in the game?

A question for the devs that one. Bear in mind that the L3 point is actually opposed to the body orbiting the central body, so will be a complete half orbit away from the secondary body (http://wmap.gsfc.nasa.gov/media/990528/990528.jpg).

Of course, if we had the system orrery view we might be able to make sense of this (http://i.imgur.com/gDU5nwJ.png).

Simple solution: it's a tiny black hole. Enough mass to hold a station in orbit but too small to get detected or to run into it. :D

Dark matter is not transparent. :)
And you can always impact on that ;)

Actually dark matter is more than simply transparent it's plain invisible and intangible since it doesn't interact with anything except gravity, itself and maybe some to me unknown particles. Light for example is "bent" trough the gravity of dark matter (and other matter ofc) and thanks to this gravitational lensing effect it was possible to map out and calculate where and how much dark matter is present in the known universe.
Dark matter and Dark energy are in fact a made up terms that functions as a place-holder since we simply don't know what they are.

Interesting fact: Dark matter and dark energy make up over 90% of all the universe and we have absolutely no clue what they are, we just know that they exist and have certain measurable effects.

I have seen a similar (or maybe the same one) before. It seems to happen when a station orbits a star without any planets. I'm not sure if this is a coding bug (e.g. stations can't have a orbit around a star) or if there actually is a logical reason for stations having some kind of small orbit around a virtual point in space.

Stations can orbit stars, this one seems to be orbiting something else, what, no idea, could be one of the things that David Braben said exists in Stellar Forge but aren't 'in' the game yet as they can't do them graphical justice, like comets.

Or it just could be a bug, Stellar Forge does have them, just look at Mitterand's Hollow...

Bingo - it's probably orbiting a comet.

As for Mitterand's Hollow that was a manually added body with some incorrect overrides - we can't blame Stellar Forge for that one!

What it could be orbiting is the Lagrange point of two other bodies in the system, though these would most likely be on or near the orbital line of one of these.

Really? I have never seen a station orbiting the primary star of a system. If there was a station they always orbit another body (including other stars) in the system, however I never saw one orbit the primary star. But then again, maybe I was just unlucky or didn't pay attention properly.

Oh wow cool :D Looking forward to such bodies maybe being fully implemented in the future.

Ah, thanks Michael, nice to know that Stellar Forge didn't mess up THAT badly with Mitterand's Hollow, it is an extremely interesting moon. I first came across it during the Hutton Orbital CG, saw that sucker zipping around New Africa and thought my game had crashed at first. Can't wait until I can go land there myself next week and watch those eclipses every 100 seconds.

I know you probably don't have a set frame, but any possible date on when we'll see comets ingame? Season 2, 3, later?
